Mobile phone services suspended in Lahore, twin cities and Gujranwala

Mobile phone services suspended in Lahore, twin cities and Gujranwala
Mobile phone services have been suspended in the federal capital and three cities of Punjab today (Friday).

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that mobile phone services in "Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Gujranwala would be blocked today 8am till Maghrib".

The decision to suspend mobile phone services comes as protests have marred the situation in various cities of Pakistan following the acquittal of Asia Bibi.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday acquitted Bibi of blasphemy charges, following which a petition was filed in the SC's Lahore registry for a review of the court’s verdict.

The review seeks Bibi’s name to be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL), which the government has underscored it does not plan to do.

“Federal Government has no plan to put Aasia Bibi’s name on ECL or appeal for a review against the court’s verdict," the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) tweeted from its official account.

"A review petition has been filed by the concerned party which has nothing to do with the government," it added.
