CTD kills three terrorists in Gujrat, trained from Afghanistan

The Counter Terrorism Department
The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has killed three terrorists in an encounter in Gujrat, while three others managed to flee away on Monday.

According to the CTD spokesperson, the CTD personnel foiled a terror bid in Gujrat by meeting an encounter with the terrorists and killing three of them on the spot, while their three accomplices fled away from the scene.

The terrorists identified as Tayyab, Bilal, and Nadir, were trained from Afghanistan and were also named in the red book.

Arms and ammunition along with maps were also confiscated from the killed terrorists, said the CTD.

The killed terrorists were wanted to police in different cases including attacks on Pakistan Air Force (PAF) base in 2007, Sargodha Police Training School and Mianwali Police Chowki.

Earlier on April 12, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in a police encounter had shot dead three suspects allegedly involved in kidnapping for ransom in Peshawar.

Grapefruit juice risky for patients with long QT syndrome: research

Grapefruit juice risky for patients with long QT syndrome
Grapefruit juice prolongs the QT interval and may impose risks for patients with congenital long QT syndrome, recent research carried out by leading medical investigators suggests.

The research was published in HeartRhythm, the official journal of the Heart Rhythm Society and the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society.

The QT interval is the time it takes the heart muscle to recharge between beats. Over 200 commonly used medications prolong the QT interval including not only antiarrhythmic drugs, but medications with no cardiac indications such as some antibiotics, antihistamines, and antipsychotic drugs.

Investigators have now confirmed the QT-prolonging effects of grapefruit juice and call for a stronger warning to patients taking such drugs.

"With so many drugs, of such varied composition blocking the IKr channel, it is reasonable to assume that food compounds may also have IKr-channel-blocker properties, raising the possibility that 'proarrhythmic food' exists," said Dr Sami Viskin, MD, Department of Cardiology, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel, who led the study.

The drugs work by blocking a specific "IKr" potassium channel on the cardiac muscle cell membrane and prolonging the repolarization in the heart ventricles.

"Previous studies showed that flavonoid compounds contained in grapefruit juice have IKr channel- blocking properties. We therefore tested the possibility that grapefruit juice has QT-prolonging properties," said said Dr Sami Viskin.

Thirty healthy volunteers and ten patients with congenital long QT syndrome took part in the study, which confirmed that grapefruit juice prolongs the QT interval.

Dr Viskin and his colleagues conclude that stronger warnings should be given against drinking grapefruit juice in large quantities for patients taking cardiac or non-cardiac medications that prolong the QT interval.

The study does not imply that daily consumption of grapefruit juice is risky for the general population, and grapefruit juice is low in calories, high in nutrients, promotes appetite controls and has been shown to aid weight loss.

"The net increase in QT interval caused by grapefruit among healthy volunteers was small, but in the range that, if grapefruit juice were a new drug in development, the results of the present study would probably lead the FDA to call for additional studies before issuing a final recommendation based on its expected benefits and risks," commented Dr Viskin.

Trump meets with Kim, crosses border into North Korea

US President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
US President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the third time on Sunday amid hopes for new talks at ending North Korea’s nuclear programs.

Trump met Kim on the southern side of the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarised Zone separating the two Koreas.

The North Korean leader while meeting Trump said his "wonderful" relationship with President Trump would enable the two longtime enemies to get over obstructions, with their nuclear talks at a stalemate.

"I am convinced our relationship will enable us to overcome barriers standing in the way," said Kim, adding as the two leaders held talks in the Demilitarized Zone that their close ties enabled a meeting to happen "just overnight".

Trump briefly crossed the inter-Korean military border into the North, becoming the first ever US president to set foot in the reclusive country.

Earlier in the day, Trump had said the North Korean leader wanted to meet at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing the two Koreas later in the day, raising hopes for an encounter that could jump-start stalled nuclear talks.

Trump arrived in Seoul late on Saturday for talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after attending the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, during which he made a surprise, spur-of-the-moment offer to meet Kim.

“Well, we’ll see. He very much wants to,” Trump had said when asked by a reporter whether Kim would meet him at the DMZ later on Sunday when Trump is scheduled to visit the heavily armed border.

“They’re trying to work it out. We both want to do it,” he said after a meeting with South Korean business leaders including the heads of Samsung, Hyundai Motor, Lotte, SK and Poongsan groups.

“It’s going to be very short, virtually a handshake. But that’s OK. A handshake means a lot.”

He said he and Kim had a “good relationship” but there was still a long way to go to reach an agreement that would end the North’s nuclear program in return for an end to sanctions and permanent peace on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea has pursued nuclear and missile programs for years in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, and easing tensions with North Korea is one of the US President’s top foreign policy priorities.

Trump made the offer to meet in a message on Twitter about his visit to South Korea.

“While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” Trump wrote.

Asset Declaration Scheme deadline extended to July 3: Shaikh

Asset Declaration Scheme deadline extended to July 3
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh during a post-budget press conference on Sunday said that the government had decided to extend the deadline for its Asset Declaration Scheme to July 3.

"There's been a lot of interest in the Asset Declaration Scheme," he said, adding that the deadline had been extended to banking office hours on July 3.

"We are giving people a final opportunity [to take advantage of the scheme] in case some people are still in the process or are facing difficulties wrapping it up," he said.

"After that, the benami commission, that we're currently establishing to pursue benami properties, will come into action," Shaikh said.

Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar, who was also at the briefing, said that thousands of people had availed the scheme so far. "We'll put forth the details of this scheme in a few days," he said.

The deadline extension comes barely a day after a statement issued by the Federal Board of Revenue denied that there would an extension in the scheme.

Budget strategy and priorities

Shaikh, while discussing the government's budget strategy at the press conference in Islamabad, said it was part of its agenda to "make all things transparent. To utter nothing but truth in front of the public. That is precisely what is reflected in this budget."

"That's why we are announcing that we are going to the International Monetary Fund programme. We're sending a message to everyone out there that we're serious and ready to take hard decisions so we can propel ourselves along a growth trajectory."

"Our focus is to generate confidence in markets and put the reforms in proper sequence. The idea is to do all this in phases, not abruptly," he explained.

He indicated five key elements of the budget that are part of the government's strategy to tackle the crisis:

"At the heart of the budget are the people of Pakistan, because a government's success can only be assessed on the basis of how good it is for the people," Shaikh said.

"And if harsher than harsh measures need to be taken, we shouldn't shy away from them," he said.

"When the PTI was elected into government, it inherited an economic crisis that it is still trying to get out of," Shaikh said, explaining that due to the current account deficit and foreign loans, the external front was a matter of great concern.

"We took immediate steps to curb the external threats. We tried bringing down the Current Account Deficit. We imposed tariffs on imports and that too on luxury products & finished products; to squeeze imports. And that has continued in this budget.

Due to foreign loans and the import-export gap, the rupee devalued in comparison to the dollar. The first step, Shaikh said, was to reduce the current account deficit.

This was achieved by levying tariffs on imports ─ particularly luxury goods and finished products ─ to reduce the purchase of such products. "The current account deficit was $20 billion when this government came to power, but it has now gone down to $13.5bn," he said.

"The budget has suggested measures that will bring it down further to $7bn."

The government also managed to acquire $9.2bn in loans with friendly countries, including deferred payment facilities with Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, while the government is in talks with Qatar over similar arrangements.

"Things are also on the right track with the International Monetary Fund," Shaikh said. "If everything stays on course, they will give us a $6bn package, and taking a cue from them, the Asian Development Bank has also committed some money. This will be disbursed during the year. We have similar hopes from the World Bank."

"These were the steps we took to generate dollars," he said.

In order to repay debts taken by previous governments and make payments to provinces, the government needs to save money, Shaikh said.

To do this, the government has begun to implement austerity measures starting from the top, with Grade 20+ civilian or military officers not receiving any increment in the budget, while Grades 17-20 received a 5 per cent increase, while Grades 1-16 received a 10pc increment in their salaries.

"For the first time in Pakistan’s history, armed forces have not got a budget increments. This sends a message that everyone is on same page regarding taking Pakistan out of this challenge," Shaikh said.

Editorial: COAS’s remarks unnecessarily expose military to accusations of encroaching on the political realm

The adviser on finance said that the government had decided that if any money is spent this fiscal year, it would be focused on the neediest sections of society first.

The government had, therefore, increased social safety net budget allocations to Rs191bn from Rs100bn.

Additionally, Rs200bn was allocated to provide relief to low-energy consumers who utilise less than 300 units of electricity.

"Then we allocated money for the people of the tribal areas. We believe that is the third most deserving strata of the government's relief efforts," Shaikh said.

"Social security nets that alleviate the poor, widows who run their households and the weakest segments of society get precedence in the government's priority list for relief."

Businessmen were also given some relief in the budget, Shaikh said, explaining that import tariffs on a number of raw materials had been slashed to 0pc so that the cost of doing business was manageable for businessmen.

Similarly, Shaikh said, the tax on exports has been exempted.

The prime minister's adviser on finance said the government had set itself a revenue collection target of Rs5.5bn for the coming fiscal year.

"The rich of Pakistan pay the lowest tax in our region. It cannot go on like this," he said, adding that the government was "all set to achieve" its tax collection target.

He explained that the measures related to taxation and revenue collection were necessary because the government wants to spend on improved infrastructure, education, better healthcare and clean water, but needs funds in order to that.

"All the valid points we got as suggestions from Parliament and other stake holders, we tried to accommodate them to improve this budget," he said.

Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar chimed in here to say that although previous governments had talked about merging FBR data with the National Database and Registration Authority for 10 years now, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government had managed to do it within 10 days.

"Basic steps for broadening our revenue that have not been taken in the past 10 years, we took in our first 10 months," he added.

FBR Chairman Shabbar Zaidi, at the press briefing with his colleagues, said that people had previously "never had a good reason to think that the government has some sort of data on them regarding their taxes".

"Now we have integrated data that serves as a driving factor," he stated.

Azhar, explaining taxes on cigarettes, denied the impression that taxes on the tobacco industry had been revoked to appease any lobby.

"The only revoked taxes are import taxes. Taxes on tier 1 and 2 have been increased per pack of cigarettes, upto Rs8 even. All this money will be directed towards healthcare," Azhar said.

PTI demands Bilawal apologise for using 'insulting words' for NA speaker

Bilawal Bhutto
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers on Saturday submitted a resolution in the lower house against PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, demanding that the opposition leader apologise for his remarks criticising the National Assembly speaker.

The resolution, which bore the signatures of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Human Rights Minsiter Shireen Mazari as well as Asad Umar and Shafqat Mehmood, stated that Bilawal had used "insulting words" for Speaker Asad Qaiser.

Bilawal, in a press talk after the budget bill was passed by the National Assembly yesterday, had accused the speaker of "running the House in a partisan manner". He had gone on to call the speaker a "worker (naukar) of the government" and criticised him for not issuing the production orders of MNAs Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir, who are currently under detention.

"Such a personalised attack on the speaker, the Custodian of the House, is an attack on the House and totally unacceptable," the resolution read. "We demand an apology on the floor of the House."

In response to the resolution against his remarks, Bilawal said: "Benazir [Bhutto] taught me to speak the truth and I will speak the truth."

"I have a lot of respect for the speaker," he said in a media talk today.

"I wrote a letter to the speaker as the chairman of the human rights committee and received a receipt saying that my letter has been received with a stamp from the National Assembly. What are you going to call him when the speaker says on national TV that he did not receive any letter?"

Bilawal had earlier said that he sent multiple letters to the speaker urging him to issue production orders of Dawar and Wazir. So far, the speaker has not issued the production orders on the advice of the law ministry.

The PPP chairperson further said that the budget had been passed without proper voting.

"How can you take such a big decision based on a voice vote?" he asked.

"Their [the government's] biggest problem is that [I] called them liars and selected. They are not bothered by the economic murder of the masses," he complained.

Money laundering main reason behind economic crisis, PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said that money laundering and corruption were the biggest reasons for the economic crisis faced by Pakistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, speaking on the floor of the National Assembly after the passage of the federal budget and the Finance Bill 2019-20, said that the Pakistani rupee has depreciated because the incumbent government inherited the largest national debt in Pakistan's history.

"The biggest reason for the fall of the Pakistani rupee is money laundering. Money was sent abroad through illicit channels because if those in power send their money outside Pakistan they will not be able to stop others," he said on the floor of the assembly.

He said that Pakistanis had $10billion stashed outside of the country.

"Things are being revealed after investigations into the Zardari group, Omni group, and fake bank accounts. Money was stolen from Pakistan and sent abroad," he said, lashing out at the leaders of the opposition parties Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He said that, after what had been revealed following the investigation into the opposition leader's family, he had no right to speak on the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee.

"These people are ones responsible themselves. Those who are accused of looting from the people of this country, how can they come and deliver speeches on the floor of this assembly?" he remarked.

"Those accused of billions in corruption become part of the Public Accounts Committee. Can you imagine how we have torn our parliament and democracy into pieces?"

The prime minister lauded members of the government and its allies for participation in and approving the budget by majority. He especially praised the speech by Minister Murad Saeed on the floor as well as the work of Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar, saying that he deserves being promoted to federal minister.

The prime minister criticised the opposition again, and in an apparent jibe at Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman, slammed the "12th man of politics who goes around gathering people to topple the government every other day".

"Can you believe that you leave behind historic debt and ask others what they did instead? All international ratings agencies look at just one thing: Is the current account in deficit?" he said. "Those who have left us in debt are blaming us. And then they try to mimic Nelson Mandela's voice and ask the why rupee is falling."

He said that the incumbent government's biggest challenge was to balance the current account. "We have managed to reduce the current account deficit by 30 percent."

Speaking further on the economic measures being by the government, Prime Minister Imran Khan promised that there would be "a complete crackdown on money laundering".

"Any kind of previous loopholes on money laundering will be closed. We are supporting overseas Pakistanis and our remittances are increasing. We are focusing on investment to bring in to Pakistan," he said, adding that different housing schemes by would be launched soon the government which would positively impact 40 directly-related industries.

"We are trying our best that the burden of these difficult times is borne by those who can bear it...those who have the money and the capability. We are trying our best that the least privileged sector gets the least burden," he said.

"We have given Rs217bn subsidy in electricity so 75 percent of consumers are not burdened. We are giving Rs5bn micro-credit for housing, which will Inshallah keep increasing.

"Another sector which we will continue to encourage will be the agriculture sector. We will bring a detailed plan for farmers. We have signed memoranda of understanding with the Chinese in CPEC for transfer of technology to improve livestock and yield," he said.

“Pakistan is a multi-religious, multi-cultural and pluralistic society where people of different faiths are living together. Their contributions to society add to its richness and diversity. Their rights are guaranteed under the Constitution of Pakistan. These constitutional guarantees are underwritten by a vigilant judiciary that has demonstrated resolve to protect the fundamental rights — including religious freedoms — in recent high profile cases,” the FO added.

The foreign office further said Pakistan is implementing a comprehensive “National Action Plan on Human Rights” which focuses on, policy and legal reforms, access to justice, implement key human rights priorities, implementation of international and UN treaties and the implementation and monitoring mechanism for the Action Plan.

“The funds to the tune of PKR 750 Million have been allocated for implementation of the Plan,” the statement said.

The statement further said, Pakistan has always played a positive role and engaged the international community including the US. “With a view to have better and mutual understanding of the issue of religious freedoms, which are under stress around the world. Pakistan is of the view that all countries are obliged to promote religious harmony and have a duty to protect their citizens in accordance with national laws and international norms,” the statement said.

The statement added that a glaring discriminatory aspect of the report is that it has ignored the systematic persecution of minorities, particularly Muslims, in India, and especially Indian occupied Kashmir where they are subjected to alien domination and foreign occupation.

“Pakistan has often raised its own concerns internationally including with the Western governments and the US over the growing trend of Islamophobia in their own countries. At the United Nations, OIC and other platforms, Pakistan will continue to be part of global efforts to combat religious intolerance, discrimination based on religion and belief and Islamophobia,” the foreign office added.

Afghanistan's warm-up win holds no relevance: Haris Sohail

Batsman of Pakistan Cricket team Haris Sohail
Left-hand batsman stressed that the Men in Green are not taking Afghanistan lightly.

Swashbuckling batsman Haris Sohail has stressed that Pakistan’s defeat to Afghanistan in the World Cup warm-up game will have no bearing on the result of World Cup’s match between the Men in Green and Naib-led side on Saturday in Headlingly.

While speaking in a pre-match press conference, Sohail said that Pakistan team are prepared to take on Afghanistan and are not taking them lightly.

"They did beat us in a warm-up game but that was a practice game and this match will be a different one, but we need to come at full power to beat them," said Sohail.

"Afghanistan's progress at international level is very good — they have quality spinners so there is no way we could take them lightly."

Sohail, whose return to form has helped revive Pakistan's World Cup hopes, said he bore no grudges after being unceremoniously dropped earlier in the tournament.

The 30-year-old left-hander has come back strongly, posting scores of 89 and 68 in victories against South Africa and New Zealand to keep alive his side's hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Sohail, dropped after scoring just eight when the West Indies shot Pakistan out for a paltry 105 at Nottingham, said he had accepted the decision.

"As a sportsman I believe that whatever is best for the team should happen," Sohail said on Friday. "I was confident that whenever I will get a chance I will give 100 percent."

The batsman said his partnership with century-maker Babar Azam was crucial in the win over New Zealand, who had been unbeaten coming into the match.

"We, Babar and I, are given a role and that is to build partnerships and in both the games I had good stands with Babar and I am sure that will continue," said Sohail.

The Babar-Sohail stand for the fourth wicket yielded 81 in Pakistan's impressive total of 308-7 against South Africa, while they added a match-winning 126 against New Zealand.

Pakistan's last league match will be against Bangladesh at Lord's on July 5.

They need to win both of their remaining games and hope other results go their way to reach the semi-finals.

It would be 'monumental' if US can reach deal with China: Trump

Donald Trump says it would be 'monumental' if US can reach deal with China
US President Donald Trump said Saturday he was ready for a "historic" deal with China as he kicked off a hotly awaited meeting with China's Xi Jinping, with the world watching to see if they can strike a deal over their long-running trade war.

After a first day dominated by public shows of bonhomie, all eyes at the G20 turned to a pivotal showdown between the two rivals that has huge implications for the global economy.

The meeting kicked off in a positive tone, with Trump saying: "It would be historic if we could do a fair trade deal... We are totally open to it."

For his part, Xi said that "dialogue" was better than confrontation after both sides had slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods.

Even before Donald Trump sat down with his Chinese counterpart, the US president grabbed the headlines with a surprise tweet inviting Kim Jong Un to meet for a handshake at the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea.

Trump has said he expects a "productive" meeting but has also warned he is prepared to slap tariffs on all Chinese imports if no deal can be struck on the sidelines of the G20.

Trump had earlier confirmed that the leaders would discuss Chinese telecoms firm Huawei, which Washington has banned over security concerns. Beijing reportedly wants the restrictions lifted as part of any trade truce.

Experts believe the most that will be agreed is a truce and a pledge to keep talking, although markets are not ruling out a complete collapse or a surprise breakthrough given the US president's mercurial nature.

The first tete-a-tete between the leaders of the world's top two economies since the last G20 in December has cast a long shadow over this year's gathering in Osaka, where differences over climate change have also been laid bare.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency said the meeting was a "unique opportunity for the two sides to find new common ground in easing trade tensions and bring the troubled ties back onto the right track".

However, the commentary also warned the US "needs to place itself on an equal footing with China" and "accommodate China's legitimate concerns".

Economists say that a lengthy trade war could be crippling for the global economy at a time when headwinds including increased geopolitical tensions and Brexit are blowing hard.

On Friday, the European Union and the South American trade bloc Mercosur sealed a blockbuster trade deal after 20 years of talks, with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker hailing it as a "strong message" in support of "rules-based trade."

Heatwave

Trade is far from the only contentious issue on the table, with climate change proving another major sticking point.

Japan is seeking consensus between EU leaders who want strong action and an American administration committed to withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

But diplomatic sources said Washington was trying to win countries over to its side and Japanese officials acknowledged they faced a diplomatic uphill battle.

By Saturday morning, almost no language on climate change had been agreed and doubts lingered over whether a final statement would even see the light of day.

A diplomatic source said it had been a "difficult" night, with the American negotiator pushing a "very tough position" and a group including France standing united against watering down the climate language in the final statement.

Trump has dominated the headlines from the summit, and once again caught observers by surprise by tweeting early Saturday that he was open to meeting Kim while in South Korea this weekend.

"If Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!," he wrote.

Several experts, however, said the focus on Trump and the talks with China struck at the heart of the G20 format, created to craft a united global response to the Lehman Brothers crisis.

"With much of the fate of the global economy and the likely direction of markets hanging on the outcome of this pivotal Trump-Xi meeting, we think things will get worse before they get better," said ING Economics.

And the focus on bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit once again sparked doubts about the future of the gathering, experts said.

"The G20 was created as a forum for cooperation and the question may well be 'have we reached the point where it can no longer serve that purpose'," Thomas Bernes from the Centre for International Governance Innovation told AFP.

World Cup 2019: Sri Lanka given a target of 203 to South Africa

srilanka vs south africa
Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 203 in their group match against South Africa on Friday and face an uphill task to secure a win that would lift them level on points with England.

Sri Lanka´s victory against the tournament hosts last week revived their hopes of reaching the semi-finals after a miserable start to the competition.

With Pakistan and Bangladesh also pushing hard, Sri Lanka, just two points behind fourth-placed England, know a win against the already eliminated Proteas at Chester-le-Street is vital.

But the 1996 winners, put in to bat, were all out in the 50th over in the northeast of England after losing wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.

Recalled seamer Dwaine Pretorius was the pick of the South African bowlers, taking 3-25 in his 10 overs while Chris Morris also finished with three wickets.

"It was a tough wicket," said Pretorius. "We just had to be disciplined and luckily that plays into my game plan.

"I think everyone backed each other well and that was probably our most disciplined performance of the tournament so far.

"The wicket looks slightly slow with a big outfield. Good cricket shots, good partnerships and running hard will be key."

Sri Lanka had a disastrous start to their innings when captain Dimuth Karunaratne was caught at slip by South Africa captain Faf du Plessis off the first ball of the match, delivered by paceman Kagiso Rabada.

Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando batted positively to take the score to 67 for one in the 10th over before Fernando (30) mistimed a shot, sending the ball steepling into the air before it was taken by Du Plessis.

Perera (30) was next to go, chopping a Pretorius delivery onto his stumps as Sri Lanka slipped to 72-3 in the 12th over.

Angelo Mathews was bowled by Morris for 11 and Kusal Mendis departed for 23.

Every recognised batsman apart from Karunaratne reached double-figures but none went on to play big innings.

A swarm of bees briefly interrupted play towards the end of the innings, forcing the players and umpires to lie flat on the ground.

South Africa are playing for pride after a disappointing tournament in which they have won just one of seven matches so far, against Afghanistan.

Haris says Pakistan cannot be complacent against Afghanistan

Haris Sohail
Pakistan’s middle-order batsman Haris Sohail said that Pakistan cannot be complacent in their World Cup match against Afghanistan on Saturday.

Sohail spoke to media at Headingley after the team’s practice session and said that players are aware of the fact that Afghanistan can be a dangerous side.

“Their spinners are very good and we know that. We have seen their videos and have planned accordingly to tackle them,” Sohail told media. The 30-year old batsman scored two consecutive half-centuries to help Pakistan win against South Africa and New Zealand and stay alive in contention.

Many feel that Haris Sohail is a different player from what he was before but Sohail says that there’s nothing changed in his natural style.

“I am playing according to the situation. The situation now is different from what situation was in the past. My role is to play at 4th or 5th position and bat according to requirement,” he said.

“I never play to secure my personal place, my only aim is to play for the team’s benefit. Even when I was dropped earlier, I thought it is in best of the team’s interest,” he added.

When asked, Haris said that he can’t be compared with likes of Misbah ul Haq, Younis Khan or Mohammad Yousuf.

The middle-order batsman further added that the team is going match by match and focused on their game only.

“We are not bothered about ifs and buts and other scenarios, our focus is on our game and we are looking forward to playing against Afghanistan first and then against Bangladesh,” he concluded.

Joint opposition to decide its candidate for next Chairman Senate: Kaira

Leader of Pakistan Peoples Party Qamar Zaman Kaira
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira on Friday said that the opposition has agreed to remove the incumbent Chairman of the Senate.

The opposition’s committee will decide its joint candidate for the top office of the senate with consensus, talking to media here, Kaira said.

“The People’s Party had supported the existing chairman Senate but now the circumstances have changed,” the PPP senior leader said.

He said the stances change in the politics with changing realities and it is part of the democratic process.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Talal Chaudhry has also indicated the opposition parties intention with regard to the change in the senate.

“Senate chairman is a symbol of selection and we want to honour the vote instead of selection,” Talal Chaudhry said in a statement.

According to a media report, the joint committee of the opposition parties will likely to pass a resolution advising Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani to tender his resignation to avoid a no-confidence move against him in the house.

If the chairman would not resign after the resolution then the opposition parties would move a no-confidence motion against him, opposition sources said.

Sanjrani had recently held a meeting with former president Asif Ali Zardari and reportedly sought his support to avoid the no-confidence motion against him.

He was elected Senate Chairman in March previous year with the support of the PPP, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and a group of independent senators from Balochistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that the opposition parties in a recently held multi-party conference had decided to remove Sadiq Sanjrani as chairman of the senate.

‘Short war’ with Iran an illusion, beginner of war will not end it: Zarif

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the US mistakenly thinks a potential war with Iran will be a short one, rejecting the speculation as an “illusion” and a “misconception,” and adding that the beginner of such war would not be necessarily the party that ends it.

Zarif made the remarks in a tweet on Thursday, in reaction to US President Donald Trump’s claim that any conflict between the two countries would not last very long.

“Misconceptions endanger peace @realDonaldTrump:” he said, adding, “Short war’ with Iran is an illusion.”

“Whoever begins war will not be the one ending it,” he further said, contesting the US confidence in its ability to control how such a confrontation could proceed.

Speaking to Fox Business on Wednesday about the quality of a hypothetical American war against Iran, Trump had alleged, "I'm not talking boots on the ground. I'm just saying if something would happen, it wouldn't last very long."

Zarif also pointed to a tweet posted by Trump on Tuesday, in which he had said the Islamic Republic would be met with “obliteration” if it ever attacked “anything American.”

The top Iranian diplomat pointed to the implications of such a threat, saying that the US president's menace amounted to genocide. "Obliteration"=genocide=war crime,” he wrote in his tweet.

Zarif had told CNN earlier that the US was “incapable” of acting on such threats, that Trump was “certainly wrong” in making the claim, and that Washington was not in any position to “obliterate” Iran, unless it resorted to using “prohibited weapons.”

In another part of his tweet, Iran's top diplomat noted that despite US claims that it is imposing sanctions on Iran as an alternative to war, those sanctions actually amount to a full-fledged economic war against the Islamic Republic.

“Sanctions aren't alternative to war; they ARE war,” Zarif said.

He finally reiterated an assertion repeatedly made by Iranian authorities, including himself, that Washington cannot expect dialogue as a foreseeable outcome if it was holding on to its pressures and threats against the country.

“Negotiations and threats are mutually exclusive,” he tweeted.

Trump’s administration has been leading a signature policy of “maximum pressure” vis-à-vis Iran. The approach has seen Washington returning its sanctions on the Islamic Republic, ramping up its warlike rhetoric while engaging in dangerous regional military buildup.

Photo of drowned migrants a failure to tackle desperation: UN

The bodies of Salvadorian migrant Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his daughter Valeria are seen after they drowned in the Rio Bravo river.
A photo of a man and his young daughter who drowned on the US-Mexico border symbolizes the failure to deal with their desperation, the UN refugee agency said on Wednesday.

“UNHCR, the U.N. Refugee Agency, is deeply shocked to see the heart-breaking photo of the drowned bodies of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his 23-month-old daughter Valeria from El Salvador washed up on the banks of the Rio Grande,” it said in a statement.

The photo, widely shared on social media, shows the pair face down in the reeds by the river bank. He had apparently stretched his T-shirt over her to form a makeshift baby sling, and their heads are nestled together. Her red shorts bulge with a water-logged diaper.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said they had risked their lives because they could not get the protection they were entitled to under international law.

“The deaths of Oscar and Valeria represent a failure to address the violence and desperation pushing people to take journeys of danger for the prospect of a life in safety and dignity,” he said in the statement.

UNHCR compared it with the iconic photograph of a Syrian refugee toddler, Alan Kurdi, washed up on the shores of the Mediterranean in 2015.

Kurdi was part of a Syrian refugee wave that caused panic in Europe, prompting Turkey to effectively shut down the migrant route through Greece at the European Union’s behest.

Since then, many countries have erected barriers to migrants and some, like the European Union and the US, have pressured their neighbours to cut the numbers of people trying to make the journey.

US President Donald Trump threatened Mexico with trade tariffs until it agreed to help cut migrant numbers, amid a surge that has overwhelmed US border facilities, with immigration lawyers citing children being held for weeks without adequate food or hygiene.

The US Customs and Border Protection agency said Tuesday its acting commissioner was resigning, as House Democrats passed a $4.5-billion funding package for programs that house, feed, transport and oversee Central American families seeking asylum.

Migration experts say tightening controls simply drives migration underground and squeezes it into new routes.

Tunisia president in 'critical condition', double suicide attacks rock capital

Tunisia president in 'critical condition', double suicide attacks rock capital
Double suicide attacks shook Tunisia's capital Thursday, even as the country was plunged into uncertainty with the hospitalisation of President Beji Caid Essebsi who was said to be in "critical condition".

The violence revived fears for the stability of the North African state, which is seen as a rare democratic success story of the Arab Spring uprisings but has been hit by repeated extremist attacks.

Thursday's blasts — one on a central avenue and another against a security base — killed a police officer and wounded at least eight people including several civilians, the interior ministry said.

An AFP correspondent saw body parts strewn in the road around a police car after the first attack, which took place on Habib Bourguiba, a central avenue near the old city.

The interior ministry said one police officer died from his wounds after that blast, while another policeman and three civilians were wounded.

"It was a suicide attack," interior ministry spokesperson Sofiene Zaag told AFP.

Half an hour later, the second attack targeted a base of the national guard, judicial police, and the anti-terror branch in the capital.

"An individual blew himself up outside the back door" of the base, wounding four security personnel, Zaag said, adding that both bombers were men.

Just hours after news of the attacks broke, the presidency announced that Essebsi "was taken seriously ill and transferred to the military hospital in Tunis".

Key adviser Firas Guefrech described the 92-year-old leader as in "critical condition" and, in a later tweet, said that Essebsi was "stable", urging supporters to pray for his recovery.

Essebsi, the country's first democratically-elected president, came to power in 2014, three years after the Arab Spring uprising toppled longtime dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and sparked revolts in several Arab nations.

No immediate claim

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks.

Civil protection units and police rapidly deployed to Habib Bourguiba avenue where the interior ministry is located.

Some passersby fainted while others fled in panic as shops and offices were closed by the police. Others crowded around the scene of the attack, expressing anger at the authorities.

"It is a cowardly terrorist operation... (to) destabilise Tunisians, the economy and democratic transition," Prime Minister Youssef Chahed told reporters, noting that it happened as the tourist season was in full swing.

"These (terrorist) groups don't belong in Tunisia and our war against them is... a question of life or death," Chahed added.

Sofiene Sliti, the spokesperson for the anti-terror prosecutors, said the suicide bombers wore explosive vests. The twin attacks also came ahead of presidential and legislative elections, scheduled for October and November.

In April, Essebsi said he did not plan to stand for re-election in order to make way for someone younger.

The veteran politician served as an adviser to Habib Bourguiba, the father of Tunisia's independence from France, holding a number of key jobs under him and later under Ben Ali.

Tunisia, the cradle of the Arab Spring uprisings, has been hit by repeated extremist attacks since the 2011 overthrow of Ben Ali.

On October 29, 2018, an unemployed graduate blew herself up near police cars on Habib Bourguiba avenue, killing herself and wounding 26 people, mostly police officers, according to the interior ministry.

The Tunisian authorities said she had sworn allegiance to Daesh.

That attack was the first to rock the Tunisian capital for over three and a half years.

In March 2015, extremist gunmen killed 21 tourists and a police officer at the National Bardo Museum in Tunis.

In June that year, 30 Britons were among 38 foreign holidaymakers killed in a gun and grenade attack on a beach resort near the Tunisian city of Sousse.

And in November 2015, a suicide bombing against a bus carrying presidential guards killed 12, in an attack claimed by Daesh.
