Sharif is serving a jail term of 7-years on being proven guilty in Al-Azizia reference filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
He was granted bail by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on medical grounds for six weeks.
Late night on Wednesday, Pakistan Muslim League-N leader and former federal minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry arrived in Lahore with government officials carrying Nawaz Sharif’s release orders.
The officials handed the release orders to the Deputy Superintendent (Judicial) of Kot Lakhpat Jail, who ordered the ousted former premier’s release.
Talking to media, Chaudhry had earlier said that the release orders would be handed to jail authorities by officials themselves, though he had travelled with them in a private aircraft from Islamabad to Lahore.
Sharif’s bail would automatically expire upon the completion of six weeks duration.
In the meanwhile, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif also reached Jati Umra, the Sharif family residence in outskirts of Lahore, in anticipation of elder Sharif’s arrival.
As Sharif was released, he was welcomed by hordes of PML-N activists who chanted slogans in his favour.
He is shortly expected to arrive at Jati Umra.
