The funeral prayers for 1965 war hero Sepoy Maqbool Hussain, attended by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa and other high high-ranking military officials, were offered on Wednesday.

Sepoy Maqbool Hussain breathed his last at the Combined Military Hospital in Attock, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Tuesday.

The brave soldier got injured and was taken prisoner by the Indian Army during the Indo-Pak war of 1965. Confined behind bars, he was tortured for years but defied his captors.

His nails were plucked and, at one point, the Indian Army cut his tongue as a punishment for his resilience and audacity. He was even dubbed a mad man by his captors as he risked his life but refused to yield to their demands.

After spending 40 years in Indian jails, he was released in 2005. He later became a recipient of Sitara-e-Jurrat.
