David Willey, Shan Masood guide Multan Sultans to victory against Quetta Gladiators

Multan Sultans to victory against Quetta Gladiators
David Willey's last over wickets and Shan Masood's 88-run knock sealed the deal for the Multan Sultans in their Monday match against the Quetta Gladiators.

Quetta Gladiators' innings

Earlier, after being invited to bat, the Sultans managed to hand Quetta a 175-run target in 20 overs for the loss of four wickets, but there were several hiccups along the way.

The lead run-scorer of PSL 7, Mohammad Rizwan, was dismissed in the second over — and that too for a duck. After the skipper went down, the Qalandars were sailing smoothly, but in the ninth over, James Faulkner was dismissed for 21.

During these dismissals, and Rilee Rossouw's run out in the middle of it, Masood was leading the way and keeping the Gladiators' boat afloat.

Finally, he was also sent packing in the second ball of the 19th over, but he had done his job by scoring 88 runs, with the help of six fours and four sixes.

In the last over, Tim David and Khushdil Shah put up a good fight as they scored 16 runs.

Of the seven games played between the two sides, so far, Sultans have won three and Quetta pocketed victories in four games.

Playing XI
Multan Sultans: Shan Masood, Mohammad Rizwan (c)(wk), Sohaib Maqsood, Rilee Rossouw, Tim David, Khushdil Shah, David Willey, Imran Khan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Imran Tahir, Abbas Afridi

UN chief appreciates Pakistan, Iran’s generosity towards Afghans

UN Secretary General António Guterres
Pakistan and Iran have shown unforgettable generosity in hosting millions of Afghans, says UN Secretary General António Guterres while reminding the rest of the world to come forward and help Afghanistan.

“I will never forget the generosity of countries like Pakistan and Iran, which — for decades — have hosted millions of Afghans in need,” the UN chief said at a Security Council debate on Afghanistan earlier this week.

“At this moment, we need the global community — and this Council — to put their hands on the wheel of progress, provide resources, and prevent Afghanistan from spiraling any further,” he added.

Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, told the participants that his country was “doing all it can to help our Afghan brothers and sisters”.

“We continue to care for nearly 4 million Afghan refugees, until they are able to return to their homes,” said the Pakistani envoy while reminding the world that humanitarian assistance alone could not revive the Afghan economy.

“Above all, it is vital to unfreeze Afghanistan’s reserves. There is no legal justification for depriving the Afghan people of their national assets,” he said.

Soon after the Aug 15 Taliban takeover of Kabul, the United States froze nearly $9.5 billion in assets belonging to the Afghan central bank and stopped shipments of cash to the nation to prevent the regime from accessing the money.

In December, the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation met in Islamabad and resolved to work with the United Nations to get the frozen assets unlocked.

“This money is critically needed to sustain and stabilise and revive the Afghan economy and to save millions of lives of poor and hungry Afghan children, women and men,” Ambassador Akram said. “This would be the most effective and generous display of solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.”

The UN chief also addressed this issue in his speech, underlining the need to “jump-start” Afghanistan’s economy through increased liquidity. “We must pull the economy back from the brink. This means finding ways to free-up frozen currency reserves and re-engage Afghanistan’s Central Bank,” he said.

Mr Guterres suggested suspending the rules and conditions that constrict not only Afghanistan’s economy, but the United Nations’ life saving operations as well.

“At this moment of maximum need, these rules must be seriously reviewed. International funding must be allowed to pay the salaries of public-sector workers,” he said, adding that the Afghan economy was enduring a bitter winter of its own.

The UN chief warned that the Afghan currency could go into freefall, and the country could lose 30 per cent of its GDP within the year.

This point was also noted at a Jan 24 meeting of special envoys of the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States in Oslo. Taliban representatives also attended the meeting.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the US and its European allies said that their governments were expanding relief operations, helping prevent the collapse of social services and “supporting the revival of Afghanistan’s economy.”

The statement said that the participants of the Jan. 24 meeting noted “the importance of increasing cash liquidity and support to the banking sector in order to help stabilize the Afghan economy.”

But this would require the Taliban to develop a transparent, and sound strategy to restore confidence in Afghanistan’s financial sector.

Babar Azam issues statement after Karachi Kings' consecutive losses

Babar Azam
Karachi Kings have not had a start that they expected, but skipper Babar Azam has not lost hope and is aiming for a cameo in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches.

"Not the start we were preparing for, but there's a lot more to come and we believe we can turn this around," Babar said in a tweet.

"It's never over until it's over," he added.

The 2020 PSL champions have put up a lacklustre performance in the ongoing tournament, which wasn't expected of them, especially after a change of leadership.

Babar Azam, who led Pakistan to a historic win against India in last year's T20 World Cup, is now the skipper of the Kings after the management decided to take away charge from Imad Wasim.

However, the Kings have been failing miserably to defend their totals in the last matches played at the National Stadium in Karachi.

They have lost by seven wickets to Multan Sultan, six wickets to Lahore Qalandars, and eight wickets to Quetta Gladiators — and it seems like this streak might continue.

In the Karachi leg, which lasts till February 7, they will face Peshawar Zalmi on February 4 and Islamabad United on February 6.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau tests positive for coronavirus

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday he had tested positive for COVID-19 but was feeling fine and would continue to work remotely while following public health guidelines.

Trudeau went into isolation last week after one of his children tested positive but at the time a rapid test for him came back negative, he told the Canadian Press.

"This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19. I'm feeling fine – and I'll continue to work remotely this week while following public health guidelines," tweeted Trudeau, who will not be able to be in Parliament later on Monday when it reopens after a winter break. He intends to attend remotely.

Trudeau, 50, went into isolation for two weeks in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic after his wife, Sophie, tested positive for COVID-19.

Several Canadian cabinet ministers, including Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, have also come down with COVID-19 in the last few months.

Other Western world leaders who have contracted the coronavirus in the past include former US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who both fell sick in 2020.

Huge coal reserve discovered in Thar

Huge coal reserve discovered in Thar
In a major development, massive three billion tonne coal deposits were discovered in Sindh's Thar, the Sindh government announced on Monday. The discovery was made during the exploitation at Thar Coal Field Block 1.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, while expressing his pleasure over the ‘good news’, said in a statement that they used to say that Thar will change the fortunes of Pakistan and that slogan is now becoming a reality.

"After digging 145 metres in Block 1 this morning, coal was discovered. It is the second such major achievement of the Sindh government," he added.

CM Sindh said that the discovered reserves were equivalent to five billion barrels of crude oil.

Meanwhile, Provincial Minister for Energy Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh, while congratulating the nation, said that the annual production of coal will be 9 billion tonnes in the first phase.

He said that the discovery will help Pakistan tackle its energy needs, adding that it will benefit the national treasury by billions of dollars.

The minister also conveyed good wishes for the Pakistani team and Chinese experts working on the project.

Afghan Taliban to reopen public universities, no word on female students

Afghan Taliban to reopen public universities
Afghanistan's public universities, closed since the Taliban seized power in August, will reopen in February, the Taliban acting higher education minister said on Sunday, without specifying whether female students would be able to return.

Universities in warmer provinces will reopen from Feb 2, while those in colder areas would reopen on Feb 26, the minister, Shaikh Abdul Baqi Haqqani, told a news conference in Kabul.

He did not say what arrangements if any would be made for female students. In the past, Taliban officials have suggested that women could be taught in separate classes.

So far, the Taliban government has reopened high schools for boys only in most parts of the country. Some private universities have reopened, but in many cases, female students have not been able to return to class.

On January 15, Zabihullah Mujahid, who is also the Taliban’s deputy minister of culture and information, had said their education departments were looking to open classrooms for all girls and women following the Afghan New Year, which starts on March 21.

“We are not against education,” Mujahid had stressed, speaking at a Kabul office building in an interview with The Associated Press.

However, a day later Taliban forces had fired pepper spray at a group of women protesters in Afghanistan's capital demanding rights to work and education. Around 20 women had gathered in front of Kabul University, chanting “equality and justice” and carrying banners that read “Women's rights, human rights”, an AFP correspondent had reported.

Western governments have made education for female students a part of their demands as the Taliban seek more foreign aid and the unfreezing of overseas assets.

The hardline group took over the country on August 15 as foreign forces withdrew.

UN report claims Taliban have killed over 100 ex-Afghan govt officials, others since takeover

Taliban have killed over 100 ex-Afghan govt officials, others since takeover
A United Nations report seen Sunday says the Taliban and its allies allegedly killed more than 100 former Afghan government members, security personnel and people who worked with international forces.

The report, an advance copy of which was seen by AFP, describes severe curtailing of human rights by Afghanistan's new fundamentalist rulers. In addition to the political killings, women's rights and the right to protest have also been curbed.

“Despite announcements of general amnesties for former members of the Government, security forces and those who worked with international military forces, UNAMA continued to receive credible allegations of killings, enforced disappearances, and other violations towards these individuals,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's report said.

Since the Taliban seized Kabul on August 15, the UN mission in Afghanistan has received more than 100 reports of such killings that it deems credible, the report said.

More than two-thirds of those killings were “extra-judicial killings committed by the de facto authorities or their affiliates.”

Additionally, “human rights defenders and media workers continue to come under attack, intimidation, harassment, arbitrary arrest, ill-treatment and killings,” it said.

The report also detailed a government clampdown on peaceful protests, as well as a lack of access for women and girls to work and education.

“An entire complex social and economic system is shutting down,” Guterres said in the report.

Afghanistan is in the grip of a humanitarian disaster, worsened by the Taliban takeover that prompted Western countries to freeze international aid and access to billions of dollars' worth of assets held abroad.

The country was almost entirely dependent on foreign aid under the previous US-backed government, but jobs have dried up and most civil servants haven't been paid for months.

No country has yet recognized the Taliban government, with most watching to see how the group — notorious for human rights abuses during their first stint in power -- restrict freedoms.

With poverty deepening and a drought devastating farming in many areas, the United Nations has warned that half the 38 million population faces food shortages.

The UN Security Council last month unanimously adopted a US resolution to allow some aid to reach desperate Afghans without violating international sanctions.

But there are growing calls from rights groups and aid organisations for the West to release more funds — particularly in the middle of a harsh winter.

Yousaf Raza Gillani resigns as Opposition leader in Senate

Yousaf Raza Gillani
PPP leader and former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani has stepped down as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate after his absence led to the passage of the State Bank (Amendment) Bill, 2021, in the Upper House of the Parliament.

"I have submitted my resignation to my party; I do not want to to be the Opposition leader anymore," Gillani said while addressing on the floor of the Senate.

During the session, 12 members were absent, including eight members of the Opposition, two of the government, and two from independent candidate Dilawar Khan’s group.

Gillani said his staff received the agenda of the January 28 Senate session at 11:30pm on January 27, while he had obtained it almost two hours later at 1am.

"It was not appropriate to add the bill to the agenda late night."

"This was such an important agenda; we should have been given more time to mull over it. The House is taken into confidence over such important matters related to the national interest, but unfortunately, this wasn't the case," he said.

The PPP Senator said the bill was not sent to the relevant standing committee, as he highlighted that bills are debated over in the committees — and as a result, lawmakers reach consensus over a matter.

Gillani said speakers and chairman are the representatives and custodians of the House. Therefore, the role of these officers should be unbiased, the PPP leader said.

"The chairman suspended the Senate session for [a mere 30 minutes]. You facilitated the government, not the Opposition," Gillani told Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani.

Gillani said it would be an honour for him if the ministers present in the House would have said that his absence led to the passage of the government's bill, but "turncoats" were blaming him.

"The 'turncoats' who leave a party for another are claiming that I helped the government," he said, referring to federal ministers Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Fawad Chaudhry.

"While it is not me who should be receiving the credit, it is chairman Senate. Rigging is taking place [in front of him] when it should not happen," he said.

Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani had in March 2021 notified Senator Gilani as Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House after the PPP nominated him for the slot with the support of 30 lawmakers.

Senate passes SBP bill

The Senate on Friday passed the State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2021 amid an outcry from the Opposition on suffering back-to-back defeats in the house, where it otherwise enjoys a dominating numerical strength.

When Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin tabled a motion seeking permission to introduce the SBP bill, the Opposition members objected to it.

A motion was put forth to vote through division and was carried by 44 against 43 votes, marking the first blow to the opposition in the day. The bill was passed by a majority vote as the Opposition kept on expressing its reservations.

On January 13, the National Assembly passed the SBP autonomy bill along with the supplementary finance bill — both these bills were a requirement by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

The approval of the State Bank amendment bill was necessary to ensure Pakistan’s sixth review of the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFE) gets cleared by the IMF’s Executive Board which is scheduled to meet on February 2 to decide the disbursement of the $1-billion tranche.

Pakistan continues battle against uptick in COVID-19 numbers as Omicron spreads

Pakistan continues battle against uptick in COVID-19 numbers as Omicron spreads
Pakistan's active COVID-19 case count stayed over the 100,000 mark for the second consecutive day, National Command and Operation Centre's (NCOC) data showed Sunday morning, as the country's positivity rate is again on the rise after a slight decline.

The stats issued by the NCOC suggested that 7,978 new infections were detected overnight after 64,016 diagnostic tests were conducted across Pakistan.

The new cases pushed the countrywide positivity ratio to 12.46% and the current number of active cases stand at 100,005.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases reported so far jumped to 1,417,991.

The first time Pakistan's active case count crossed the hundred thousand mark was on Saturday, when the country logged 104,095 cases, as per the NCOC. However, the tally was lowered as 12,019 patients suffering from COVID-19 recuperated overnight.

Meanwhile, 29 patients succumbed to coronavirus during the last 24 hours, taking the country's COVID-19 death toll to 29,248.

The NCOC has extended coronavirus curbs in the country from January 31 till February 15, as thousands continue to contract the infection amid a spread of the Omicron variant.

The NCOC had imposed non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) on January 19, which were to be reviewed on January 27 in light of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

The restrictions for the wedding sector were already imposed till Feb 15.

WHO's Asia-Pacific chief probed over racism, misconduct

world health organization
World Health Organisation head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday announced an investigation into a "senior staff" member, the UN agency's Western Pacific chief, over claims of racism and misconduct.

"We have been aware of some concerns since late 2021 and have been following due process. With the cooperation of the staff member, an investigation process is underway," Tedros said on the final day of the WHO's executive council meeting in Geneva.

The WHO chief didn't say when the enquiry opened, adding that "there is a limit to what we can say at this time".

However, Tedros added that "we take these allegations seriously".

The serious accusations, detailed in an email seen by AFP after the affair was revealed on Thursday by the Associated Press, target the head of the agency's Western Pacific region Japanese doctor Takeshi Kasai, who has already said he is ready to cooperate in any investigation.

According to AP, dozens of WHO staff members filed an internal complaint in October before sending an email in mid-January to the countries on the UN agency's executive board.

In the email, they accused Kasai of "authoritarian and racist leadership" adding that he had regularly shared privileged information with the Japanese Foreign Ministry, of not wanting to criticise China and of having "wasted" donor money.

Many countries expressed their concerns over the matter earlier this week.

On Saturday, several diplomats again called on the WHO to investigate all allegations of misconduct.

"We take all allegations seriously and expect that independent investigations will be progressed as a matter of priority," an Australian representative said Saturday.

A British representative said: "once again we regret to have heard of this first in the media".

A Norwegian official said "we need a WHO that we all trust, member states as well as staff, beneficiaries and the global community. This includes creating an organizational culture that promotes good ethics and builds trust within the organization and having solid systems in place to enable this".

The investigation comes at a time when the WHO is already under great pressure.

The UN health agency has been under intense pressure to make far-reaching changes following revelations in 2020 of widespread sexual abuse by humanitarian workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Friday the World Health Organization's main donor countries demanded that it speeds up and broadens reforms aimed at preventing sexual abuse by staff in the field.

Islamophobia is unacceptable, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday said that Islamophobia is not acceptable at any cost and vowed to make his country safer for Muslims.

Taking to Twitter, the Canadian premier wrote: "Islamophobia is unacceptable. Full stop. We need to put an end to this hate and make our communities safer for Muslim Canadians. To help with that, we intend to appoint a Special Representative on combatting Islamophobia."

the Canadian Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen highlighted the federal government’s intention to appoint a special representative on combatting Islamophobia, saying that "this appointment will be part of a renewed Government of Canada Anti-Racism Strategy," a statement issued by the Government of Canada said.

Last year, the Canadian government had announced its intention to make January 29 a National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia.

"This year, on the eve of the five-year anniversary of this act of terror, the Government of Canada stands with and supports Muslim communities across Canada and reaffirms its commitment to take action to denounce and tackle Islamophobia and hate-fueled violence," the statement said.

Islamophobia is a concrete and daily reality for Muslim communities across Canada and around the world, it read, adding that "As we honour the victims, we must remember that we have a responsibility to combat discrimination and continue to build a more inclusive Canada."

"That is why the federal government held a virtual National Summit on Islamophobia in July 2021. The special representative appointment is one of the recommendations put forward during the Summit and will be an additional step in the government’s ongoing work through Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy to tackle Islamophobia in all its forms."

It further added that confronting Islamophobia is an important part of the aforementioned strategy as it includes a whole-of-government approach to tackling systemic racism with dedicated knowledge and expertise through the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat, as well as investments to empower communities to combat different forms of racism, including Islamophobia, and to advance digital and civic literacy initiatives that address online disinformation and hate speech.

"We are committed to renewing the Anti-Racism Strategy in 2022 with a National Action Plan to expand our efforts to combat hate and racism."

Details on the role and mandate of the special representative will be confirmed at a later date, the statement said.

iPhone users can now use Face ID feature with mask on

iphone
People who have been using Face ID to unlock their iPhones before the COVID-19 pandemic faced the hassle to remove their masks and then unlocking the phones.

But now, since the pandemic is not showing signs of going away anytime soon and masks have become an essential "accessory" for people across the globe, Apple has added a new feature in iOS 15.4 (currently in beta) which has the ability to use Face ID even when someone is wearing a mask.

However, Apple suggests using a full-face scan because it's a lot more secure than the new mask Face ID update. But even then, it is an excellent solution to the "new normal" lifestyle.

An iOS update would be needed if you don't have iOS 15.4. By following simple three steps, you can access the "mask on Face ID feature," the report said.

1. Open the Settings.

2. Tap on Face ID & Passcode, then you’ll have to enter your passcode to access this menu.

3. Scroll down to Use Face ID With a Mask and toggle it on.

Your face will be scanned by the feature twice, focusing on the lower part of the face where you put on a mask. You do not have to wear a mask during this additional setup process, but the scanner acts as if you are.

This new feature doesn't apply any restrictions on you to be able to unlock your phone in any way, with or without a mask you can access your phone.

Peshawar High Court ordered PTA to ban immoral content on TikTok

Peshawar High Court
The Peshawar High Court on Saturday has issued a written order to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ban immoral content shared on the famous lip-syncing application TikTok.

According to the report presented by PTA, it has blocked 28.9 million videos from the app, while 1.4 million accounts are blocked for sharing immoral content.

The written order also stated that the young generation is "being inspired by immoral content shared on TikTok," adding that people who share immoral content are prosecuted but not punished which allows them to continue spreading such content.

“PTA should make procedures to block the accounts of repeated violators,” said the written order.

The PTA has blocked and restored the app several times during the last year on similar charges.

Murad Raas issued an update for schools in province

Murad Raas
Punjab Minister for Education Murad Raas on Friday issued an update for schools in the province's megacities — Lahore and Rawalpindi — as the country sees a steady rise in coronavirus cases.

In a statement on Twitter, the education minister said in all public and private schools of Lahore and Rawalpindi, classes up to grade 6 will continue in a staggered manner — 50% students each day — until February 15.

Earlier, the restriction was imposed till January 31 and was limited to Lahore.

The education minister said classes 7 to 12 will remain on the previous schedule (continue with strict SOPs and all students vaccinated). "Please follow COVID SOPs."

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) also a day earlier decided to extend the coronavirus curbs in the country from January 31 till February 15.

No evidence to declare Nawaz Sharif's medical report fake: AG

Attorney-General of Pakistan Barrister Khalid Javed Khan
There is no evidence to support Nawaz Sharif's medical reports being fabricated, says Attorney-General of Pakistan Barrister Khalid Javed Khan.

The AGP said they do not want to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Shahbaz Sharif over the subject of Nawaz Sharif's return. Instead, he said, they want the situation to be settled amicably.

In response to a question about Nawaz Sharif's medical reports, Khalid Javed Khan stated that he lacks evidence to declare them fake.

In response to the Supreme Court Bar's constitutional petition, the AGP stated that if the subject of lifelong disqualification is brought before Parliament rather than the court, an attempt can be made to reach a consensus.

Earlier this week, the AGP had written a letter to the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif to bring back PML-N Supremo Nawaz Sharif to Pakistan.

The AGP had instructed Shahbaz to submit Nawaz’s medical reports within the next 10 days. In case he fails to do so, contempt of court petition will be filed against Shahbaz, he had said.

World crude oil prices at the highest level

IATA wants countries to remove travel curbs for fully vaccinated passengers

IATA wants countries to remove travel curbs for fully vaccinated passengers
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged governments around the world to employ their two years of Covid-handling experience to do away with travel restrictions, which it said were "a mess".

Calling for the adoption of "unique solutions" to manage global travel, IATA Director General Willie Walsh, in a statement on Tuesday, urged governments to accelerate the relaxation of travel restrictions for fully vaccinated passengers with a WHO-approved vaccine as Covid-19 continued to evolve from the "pandemic to endemic stage".

Walsh said it was the need of the hour to remove all travel barriers, including quarantine and testing, for fully vaccinated individuals as "with the experience of the Omicron variant, there is no mounting scientific evidence and opinion opposing the targeting of travellers with restrictions and country bans to control the spread of Covid-19."

"These measures have not worked. Today Omicron is present in all parts of the world. That’s why travel, with very few exceptions, does not increase the risk to general populations," he said.

The IATA chief said an amount running into billions spent on testing travellers would be far more effective if it was allocated to vaccine distribution or strengthening health care systems.

"All indications point to Covid-19 becoming an endemic condition — one that humankind now has the tools (including vaccination and therapeutics) to live and travel with, bolstered by growing population immunity," the statement said.

Walsh said it was important that governments and the travel industry were well prepared for the transition and ready to remove the burden of measures that disrupted travel.

He said there seemed to be more unique solutions to managing travel and Covid-19 than there were countries to travel to.

"Indeed research from the Migration Policy Institute has counted more than 100,000 travel measures around the world that create complexity for passengers, airlines and governments to manage," he pointed out.

He said all countries now had at least two years of experience to be guided on a simplified and coordinated path to normalise travel "when Covid-19 is endemic".

"That normality must recognise that travellers, with very few exceptions, will present no greater risk than exists in the general population. And that’s why travellers should not be subject to any greater restrictions than are applied to the general community,” said Walsh.

The IATA emphasised that mutually recognised policies on vaccination would be critical as the world approached the "endemic phase".

"Barrier-free travel is a potent incentive for vaccination. The sustainability of this incentive must not be compromised by vaccine policies that complicate travel or divert vaccine resources from where they can do the most good."

Opposition would face "defeat and humiliation" when it marches to Islamabad on March 23: Sheikh Rasheed

Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed
Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed said Wednesday the Opposition would face "defeat and humiliation" when it marches to Islamabad on March 23, as he assured them the government would not create hurdles for them if they follow the law.

Despite persistent persuasion by the government, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) had on Tuesday decided to continue with the long march against rising inflation on March 23 (Pakistan Day).

Addressing an event in Pindi, the interior minister said due to security measures on the occasion of Pakistan Day and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers Council's presence in the capital, mobile phone services might be suspended as well.

"What is your agenda? Why are you marching towards Islamabad?" the interior minister asked the Opposition, as he reiterated that they would face no resistance from the government.

The interior minister said the Opposition has already faced defeat in Parliament, and now it will also face "political defeat on the roads".

Rasheed said the Opposition had not been able to make any headway in its bid to oust the government in the last three-and-a-half years, and it could not do anything in future as well.

"The only thing they have done is give irresponsible statements against Imran Khan. The public did not come out on the streets in the last 3.5 years, and they will not come out now," he said.

Rasheed said PM Imran Khan was "an honest man", who had a good relationship with the "establishment".

He warned the Opposition that the prime minister would indeed be "very dangerous" if he were to take to the streets against it. "I say this with authority: Imran Khan has street power."

Health issues create economic problems for the people and our vision behind this scheme is to at least relieve them of the economic suffering when they get ill, he went on to say.

The premier further said that Rs450 billion has been utilized for health insurance purpose, adding, courage and determination needed to take such steps.

Black Day: Kashmiris observe India's Republic Day with protests

Black Day: Kashmiris observe India's Republic Day with protests
People of Jammu & Kashmir living on both sides of the line of control and rest of the world are observing the Indian Republic Day as black day today (Wednesday). This protest is meant to invite the attention of international community towards the 75-year long unlawful Indian occupation of Jammu & Kashmir which deprives them of their internationally recognized right of self determination.

The day will be marked with a complete shutdown in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmiris observe the Indian Republic day as black day every year to protest against the continued long Indian subjugation of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. It also intends to bring into focus brutalities and custodial killings of the innocent Kashmiris and the unabated violations of human rights by the Indian occupying forces in the held state.

This year, too, Kashmiris are observing the Indian republic day as black day as the hardliner PM Modi-led Indian government continues violating all international norms and commitments by scrapping special status of the internationally-acknowledged disputed status of the Jammu Kashmir. It may be mentioned here that the article 370 and article 35-A of India’s constitution were revoked on August 5, 2019 after which at least one million military and para military troops were deployed in Indian-occupied Jammu Kashmir.

The black day is also aimed at apprising the world community of the continued hostile attitude of India denying Kashmiris their legitimate right to self determination and deviating all international norms escaping from the peaceful solution of the much delayed Kashmir issue.

In Azad Jammu & Kashmir protest rallies and demonstrations against illegal Indian occupation will be the hallmark of the black day in all ten districts of the liberated territory.

Major rally to observe the Indian Republic Day will be held in Muzaffarabad in which AJK leaders of various political parties including those in the AJK Parliament will participate.

The day will also mark complete solidarity with the freedom-loving people of Indian occupied Jammu Kashmir in their just and principled struggle for freedom and for the achievement of their legitimate right to self determination.

The protest rallies are scheduled to be arranged by various social, political and public representative organizations from all spheres of life including lawyers, journalists, members of the business community, laborers, students, women and social and political workers.

In Mirpur, a protest rally will be held at Shaheed Chowk followed by a big procession of people belonging to all segments of the civil society. The city elders representing various segments of the civil society will also highlight the importance of early peaceful settlement of the Kashmir problem besides expressing concerns about India and its unlawful and forced occupation of Jammu Kashmir for the past 75 years.

PTI's former information secretary to file lawsuit against termination from party

the PTI had expelled Jawad
Former central information secretary of PTI Ahmed Jawad on Sunday announced that he will file a lawsuit against the party for terminating his membership.

the PTI had expelled Jawad from the party for "violating the party's constitution" on social media and "slandering" senior leadership.

Talking to Geo News, Jawad said that his termination from the party’s membership is "illegal," adding that, “PTI voters and workers have seen the true colours of Imran Khan now."

The ex-PTI member said that in the last 74 years, "no one ha deceived the nation like PTI did, while overseas Pakistanis were used like Automated Teller Machines (ATM)."

It is worth mentioning here that Jawad had criticised the policies of the ruling party.

Taking to his Twitter account, he had said that he will reveal the reasons why he stayed quiet for so long on the "fascism and incompetence of PTI," asking followers to "stay tuned".

He further asked Prime Minister Imran Khan: “How did your illegal Bani Gala house and Constitution Avenue flat become legal? Can't the houses of the poor be regularised like Constitution Avenue was regularised?"

Subsequently, the PTI expelled the former secretary of information for "violating the party's constitution" on social media.

According to a statement issued by the PTI’s Standing Committee on Accountability and Discipline (SCAD) on January 12, a show-cause was served to Ahmad asking him to explain his position within seven days of the receipt of the notice but the disgruntled leader did not respond to the notice.

After receiving the second show-cause notice, Jawad sent a reply, which was received by the SCAD on January 21; however, he did not explain his position, rather admitted that he had issued more than 40 tweets while SCAD took notice of only two of his tweets.

“The Sub Committee of the SCAD observed that there were different forums in the party for Jawad to express his feelings/narrative before the party while he used social, electronic media to get his objective [to] malign/slander the party senior leadership, causing severe damage to the party,” the statement read.

The sub-committee after analysing the facts of the case and reading Jawad's reply found him "committing a severe violation of the party constitution". Hence, it "unanimously decided to strike down the party membership of Ahmad Jawad from the party membership register”.

Oslo talks with West will 'transform atmosphere of war: Afghan Taliban

taliban
The Taliban's first official talks with the West on European soil since seizing power in Afghanistan will help to "transform the atmosphere of war" after a two-decade insurgency against NATO forces.

The group stormed back to power in August as US and foreign troops began their final withdrawal from the country following a stalemate on the battlefield.

No country has yet recognised the Taliban's government — notorious for human rights abuses during a first stint in power between 1996 and 2001 when they were ousted by a US-led invasion.

"The Islamic Emirate has taken steps for meeting the demands of the Western world and we hope to strengthen our relations through diplomacy with all the countries, including European countries and the West in general," Zabihullah Mujahid told.

The Taliban want to "transform the atmosphere of war... into a peaceful situation".

Talks between the Taliban and Western officials will open in Oslo on Sunday on human rights and humanitarian aid as a poverty crisis deepens.

The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated drastically since the Taliban's takeover. International aid came to a sudden halt and the United States has frozen $9.5 billion (8.4 billion euros) in Afghan central bank assets held overseas.

Hunger now threatens 23 million Afghans, or 55% of the population, according to the United Nations, which says it needs $5 billion from donor countries this year to address the humanitarian crisis in the country.

The visit from Sunday to Tuesday will see meetings between the hardline Islamists, Norwegian authorities and officials from a number of allied countries including Britain, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy and the United States, the Norwegian foreign ministry statement said.

The Taliban delegation is also expected to meet Afghans from civil society, including women leaders and journalists, at a time when the freedoms of those living in Afghanistan are being increasingly curtailed.

"These meetings do not represent a legitimisation or recognition of the Taliban" Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt said Friday.

"But we must talk to the de facto authorities in the country. We cannot allow the political situation to lead to an even worse humanitarian disaster."

The 15-member all male Taliban team, led by foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, left Kabul on Saturday on a plane organised by the Norwegian government, a Taliban spokesman said.

Ali Maisam Nazary, the foreign relations chief for the National Resistance Front (NRF) — an opposition group that bills itself as the last bastion against total Taliban control — condemned Norway over the talks.

"We all must raise our voices and prevent any country from normalizing a terrorist group as the representative of Afghanistan," Nazary, who is based in Paris, tweeted on Friday.

America, Russia agreed to keep working to ease tensions over Ukraine

Washington and Moscow's top diplomats on Friday agreed to keep working to ease tensions over Ukraine, with the United States promising a written response to Russian security requirements next week and not ruling out a presidential meeting.

As fears grew that Russia could invade its pro-Western neighbour, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken renewed warnings of severe Western reprisals as he met for 90 minutes with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva.

The Russian foreign ministry said later that in his talks with Blinken, Lavrov had vowed "the most serious consequences" if Washington kept ignoring Moscow's security demands.

Blinken described the high-stakes talks as "frank", with Lavrov also voicing hope for a lowering of the temperature between the former Cold War foes.

Russia has massed tens of thousands of troops on the Ukrainian border, denying it plans to invade but demanding security guarantees, including a permanent ban on the country joining NATO.

Blinken said that Washington will share written ideas with Russia next week in which it will also make clear its own positions.

"We didn't expect any major breakthroughs to happen today, but I believe we are now on a clear path in terms of understanding each other's concerns and each other's positions," Blinken told reporters.

"We anticipate that we will be able to share with Russia our concerns and ideas in more detail in writing next week and we agreed to further discussions after that," he added.

Speaking separately, Lavrov told reporters: "Antony Blinken agreed that we need to have a reasonable dialogue, and I hope emotions will decrease."

He added that another meeting could be held between the two, but that it was "premature" to start talking about another summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin, who met in Geneva last June.

Blinken, however, did not rule out fresh talks between the presidents after Biden twice warned Putin by telephone of consequences for any Ukraine invasion.

"If we conclude (and) the Russians conclude that the best way to resolve things is through a further conversation between them, we're certainly prepared to do that," Blinken said.

Biden bluntly assessed on Wednesday that Putin is likely to "move in" on Ukraine and warned of a "disaster for Russia".

A senior US official, speaking to reporters later Friday, said Washington was preparing to send proposals to the Russians and was in close coordination with "our allies".

"The United States does not plan a public release," she said.
