Nokia phones look to the future, and to the past

Nokia phones look to the future, and to the past
Seeking to capitalize on their comeback over the past year, the makers of Nokia phones are expanding to include a premium Android smartphone, their first, and a remake of one of its biggest hits of the 1990s, the 8110 “slider” phone.

Set up by ex-Nokia executives who have licensed the famous brand, HMD Global -- as the year-old company is known -- has focused on mid-priced Androids and even sub-$100-priced phones since entering the smartphone market.

Chief Executive Florian Seiche said HMD has sold around 30 million phones after introducing 11 new phone models over the past year. On Sunday, it announced two new models, plus refreshed versions of three phones first offered last year.

“We feel great about the momentum we had in 2017 and that gives us the confidence to double down in 2018,” Seiche told reporters at a briefing in London ahead of the product launch.

HMD Global Executiv Officer Florian Seiche and Product Officer Juho Sarvikas present the new Nokia 8110 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain – Reuters .

Mobile phone market tracker Counterpoint Research said Nokia phones surged during 2017 to become the world’s No. 1 seller of low-cost feature phones and No. 11 in smartphones after only entering the market last year. On a combined basis, Nokia now ranks as the No. 6 mobile phone seller, Counterpoint calculates.

HMD’s strategy is to use distribution partnerships with 600 top mobile operators and retailers in selected markets around the world to offer reliable, affordable products with the latest innovations, plus monthly Google security updates on all phones.

Europe remains the biggest region for Nokia phones sales, Seiche said; India, Russia and Indonesia are its biggest country markets.

The Nokia 8 is the company’s flagship phone, priced at 749 euros ($920.75) and designed to compete with Samsung’s and Huawei’s premium models. A new, 4G-ready version of Nokia’s 8110 is priced at 79 euros ($97).

Nokia 8 is available in April, the revamped 8110 in May. The 1990s throwback model comes in two colour choices, classic black or banana yellow, a play on how its keyboard slid out, inspiring the nickname “banana phone”.

Nokia Corp, once the world’s dominant phone maker, sold its handset business to Microsoft in 2014 and is now focused on telecom network equipment.

HMD took over the Nokia feature phone business from Microsoft in 2016 and struck a deal with Nokia Oyj to use the brand on smartphones.

Train crash leaves at least 16 dead and 40 injured
At least 15 people were killed in train collision in northern Egypt, the health ministry said.

Another 40 people were hurt in the collision between a freight train and a passenger train in Beheira province, it said in a statement.

Egyptians have long complained that successive governments have failed to enforce basic safety measures for the railways. A string of crashes have further inflamed public anger over the antiquated transport network.

Footage aired by state television showed at least two carriages had derailed in a rural stretch of land. Civilians and medics were seen removing injured passengers and carrying them to ambulances.

Health ministry official Alaa Othman told state television "all the wounded and dead have been removed from the scene of the accident".

The cause of Wednesday's crash was not immediately clear. Prime Minister Sherif Ismail ordered Transport Minister Hesham Arafat to visit the scene and take action as details of the causes of the accident emerge, a cabinet statement said.

The crash comes months after 41 people died in a train collision near the coastal city of Alexandria last August.

That was the deadliest train accident in Egypt since a November 2013 collision between a train and a bus killed 27 people south of Cairo.

In 2002, 373 people died when a fire ripped through a crowded train, also south of the capital.

Figures recently released by the state's statistics agency show that 1,249 train accidents took place last year, the highest since 2009 when the number reached 1,577.

Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto
Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Wednesday termed Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif as the chief of killers and Imran Khan as Taliban Khan.

He said this during a visit to PPP membership campaign camp at Shahrae-Faisal attended by several PPP activists.

The PPP Chairman said that if Imran Khan and Shehbaz Sharif wanted to participate in the polls from Karachi, they could do so but would not be able to win from there.

'I've been made a victim of revenge,' says Nehal Hashmi upon release from Adiala Jail

'I've been made a victim of revenge,' says Nehal Hashmi upon release from Adiala Jail
Former senator Nehal Hashmi was released from Adiala Jail on Wednesday after completing his one-month sentence handed to him by the Supreme Court (SC) over contempt of court.

Supporters gathered outside Adiala Jail and showered him with rose petals.

Speaking to the media after being released, Hashmi said he was a victim of revenge as his appeal against the verdict has not been heard even after his sentence has ended.

"This is the height of oppression," a charged Hashmi said outside Adiala Jail. "This is the state of this country."

He said that prisons were filled with "75-year-old men, people who needed bypass surgery and those targeted by NAB (National Accountability Bureau)".

"Conspirators! Nothing is in your hands," he railed. He called for action against NAB which he claimed was the "most corrupt institution in the country".

"Who are you holding accountable? And who are you anyway? I stand by what I said [earlier]," he said.

On being asked if he was "ashamed" of his statement that landed him in jail, Hashmi declared that only a "fraud, thief or a person who took undue advantage of power would be embarrassed".

"A firebrand speaker"

Last year Hashmi had lashed out at the judiciary for investigating former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in the Panama Papers case.

"Those who are scrutinising them [Sharif and his sons], we will not spare you," he had warned.

He was expelled from the PML-N following his speech and Sharif demanded the former senator to resign from his seat in Senate.

Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb later said that the party does not support what Hashmi said and that it was his "personal opinion".

Explaining his outburst in the Senate, Hashmi said he had expressed his personal views at a gathering of party workers. He pointed out that he had not named anyone in the speech.

The SC had taken notice of Hashmi's remarks against the judiciary. A three-member SC bench — headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Dost Mohammad — on February 1 had sentenced Hashmi to one month in prison and Rs50,000 after finding him guilty of contempt of court.

He was also barred from holding public office for the next five years.

Further, the bench had dismissed an unconditional apology, which Hashmi had submitted to the court on January 24 for his threatening video message against "those investigating" former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.

The detailed judgement of the case — written by Justice Khosa and agreed to by Justice Shah — said: "[Hashmi] is a firebrand speaker and the tone, the pitch and the delivery of the offending words bear an ample testimony to that but unfortunately on that day he had spewed fire towards a wrong direction.

"He attacked the judiciary, the judges and those who were tasked by this Court to investigate some allegations of criminal conduct on the part of the respondent’s political leader, his family and others."

Justice Mohammad had not shared his opinion "for purely personal reasons".

Those who don't respect vote won't be respected in return: Nawaz Sharif

Nawaz Sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday that those who do not respect the people's vote will not be respected in return.

Nawaz was addressing party supporters in Sargodha on a condolence visit to a party official.

Moreover, Nawaz termed as rigging the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan to not allow PML-N to contest the Senate elections from the party's platform.

"This is unfair. This is what's being meted out to the largest political party in the country," he said, adding that he is not the one to back down.

The PML-N chief asked supporters to vow to stand with him in his fight for Pakistan.

"They're trying to kick me out, but the people are bringing me back in," he said, adding that "this is a fight for Pakistan's survival, for your rights, and we will win this fight".

"After removing me as PM, they didn't stop there. They used that as a basis to remove me as PML-N president," said Nawaz, who was recently restrained by the Supreme Court from holding party office.

"They don't care about the millions of voters," he remarked further.

Nawaz also stated that the petitioner, Imran Khan, himself said the verdict against him was weak. "Now tell me, what is the worth of this judgment," he added.

Nawaz also questioned whether the people's vote is respected in Pakistan. "I have taken the first step, now you have to walk with me," he said further while addressing the party supporters.

Earlier, he once again questioned the basis of his disqualification by the Supreme Court, saying prominent lawyers disagreed with the verdict.

Nawaz also termed Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as brilliant partners.

Egyptian army kills 12 militants, arrests 92 amid fresh Sinai operation

Egyptian army kills 12 militants
Egyptian security forces have killed 12 Takfiri militants and captured 92 others as part of an ongoing military offensive in the violence-torn Sinai Peninsula.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Egyptian army said the latest fatalities, which came during heavy gun battles, brought to 28 the number of the militants killed since the launch of ‘Operation Sinai 2018’ on Friday.

The Egyptian air force also bombed 60 militant positions in the region.

The objective of the major operation -- involving Egyptian forces in the army, air force and the navy -- is to tighten control of border points and “clean up areas where there are terrorist hotbeds,” according to the army.

In November, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had instructed the country’s armed forces to end the Daesh-inspired militancy in Sinai Peninsula within three months, after a brutal mosque attack killed over 300 people.

Sisi, who is preparing to seek a second term in the upcoming presidential elections in March, has ordered the army to use “absolute force” to eradicate the terrorists.

The Sinai Peninsula has been under a state of emergency since October 2014, after a deadly militant attack left 33 Egyptian soldiers dead.

In past years, militants have been carrying out anti-government activities and fatal attacks, taking advantage of the turmoil in Egypt that erupted after the country’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, was ousted in a military coup in July 2013.

The Velayat Sinai outfit has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.

Velayat Sinai is affiliated to the once-powerful Daesh Takfiri militant group operating in Iraq and Syria.

Chinese cricketers to join Peshawar Zalmi squad for upcoming PSL fixture
Two Chinese cricketers are set to join the Peshawar Zalmi squad on Thursday for the tenth fixture of the Pakistan Super League 2018 in Sharjah.

Jian Li and Yufie Zhang were recruited by the Zalmi in an effort to promote cricket in China, the team's China representative, Amir Suhail Afridi told APP on Tuesday.

"We will provide them a platform to recognise their talent and motivate them to achieve international recognition," he said, adding that the Chinese cricketers would join the Zalmi camp at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The team is set to play a match against the Quetta Gladiators in Sharjah on Thursday. The Zalmi, the defending champions, have won only one of their three matches and are placed at the fourth spot among the six PSL teams. The Gladiators have won one match and lost another, placing third so far.

The House of Zalmi had organised a Global Zalmi League in Feburary ─ a fan-based league of cricket enthusiasts with representative Zalmi clubs in over 16 countries around the world.

China Zalmi was represented by cricketers from China, a majority of whom were selected from the Pakistani Community Keqiao.

Participating teams were divided into four groups and China Zalmi remained unbeaten in its three league matches before the quarter-final and final, and went onto win the title.

Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi not only awarded the winning team $10,000 but also allowed two of its players to participate in a practice session with senior team members.

He expressed confidence that the China Zalmi win in the Global Zalmi League would help promote cricket among the Chinese youth.

Xi term limit proposal sparks rare public dissent in China

Xi term limit proposal sparks rare public dissent in China
In a rare public expression of dissent in China, a well-known political commentator and a prominent businesswoman have penned open letters urging lawmakers to reject a plan that would allow President Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely.

Their impassioned statements on a popular messaging app were circulated widely after the ruling Communist Party announced a proposal on Sunday to amend the constitution to scrap term limits on the president and vice president.

In a statement on Monday on WeChat to Beijing's members of China's rubber-stamp parliament, Li Datong, a former editor for the state-run China Youth Daily, wrote that lifting term limits would “sow the seeds of chaos".

“If there are no term limits on a country's highest leader, then we are returning to an imperial regime,” Li told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

“My generation has lived through Mao. That era is over. How can we possibly go back to it?”

Wang Ying, a businesswoman who has advocated government reforms, wrote on WeChat that the Communist Party's proposal was “an outright betrayal” and “against the tides".

“I know that you (the government) will dare to do anything,” she wrote. “And one ordinary person's voice is certainly useless. But I am a Chinese citizen, and I don't plan on leaving. This is my motherland too!”

In a message that was swiftly deleted by censors, sociologist Li Yinhe called the removal of term limits “unfeasible” and would “return China to the era of Mao".

Li added, however, that delegates to the National People's Congress, China's parliament, are likely to pass the amendment unanimously since “they aren't really elected by the people, therefore they don't represent the people in voting, but will vote according to the leadership's design".

An official at the information department of the Congress' Standing Committee said on Tuesday that he was not aware of the open letters.

While Xi, 64, is broadly popular in China for his economic stewardship, muscular foreign policy and emphasis on stability, it's difficult to determine how the move to end term limits has been received overall. Few Chinese dare to speak out on political topics, even online, while the media are entirely state-controlled and public polling on sensitive issues is nonexistent.

The Congress is all but certain to pass the constitutional amendment when it meets for its annual session early next month, at which it will grant Xi a second five-year term and appoint new ministers and other government officials.

Under the 1982 constitution, the president is limited to two five-year terms in office, but Xi — already China's most powerful leader since Mao — is seemingly convinced that he's the only one who can realise his vision for China and wants additional terms to see through his agenda of fighting corruption, eliminating poverty and transforming China into a modern leading nation by midcentury.

A simple thirst for power is another possible motivation.

Government and party spokesmen have yet to offer any detailed explanations of the reasoning behind the dropping of term limits. Nor is it clear whether Xi will seek to remain president for life or will only stay on for a set number of additional terms.

“The fact that this proposal was possible means that Xi Jinping's influence is growing,” said Chen Jieren, a Beijing-based independent political scholar. “The party is recognising his achievements in fighting corruption. People have confidence in and respect for his resoluteness.”

But Chen added: “China is not Cuba. Through the past few decades, Chinese people have come to understand that no one should be in power for life.”

Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Monday that the proposal “was made in accordance with the new situation and the practice of upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era".

In a commentary on Tuesday, the official China Daily newspaper mentioned the proposal to strip out language in the constitution limiting the president and vice president to two five-year terms, saying it was “necessitated by the need to perfect the party and the state's leadership system".

While Chinese censors have moved swiftly to delete satirical online commentary on the move, a range of opposition views continue to be shared. The Global Times, a newspaper published by the Communist Party, said “outside forces” were trying to challenge the party's leadership.

Turkey's court gives paedophile 'record 572-year sentence'

Turkey's court gives paedophile 'record 572-year sentence'
A Turkish court jailed a paedophile a record 572 years for abusing 18 children at the school where he worked, reports said on Tuesday, as alarm grows over the extent of child abuse in the country.

The court in the southern province of Adiyaman convicted the janitor after it was found he raped children and would sneak into some of the pupils' beds, Hurriyet daily said.

The defendant was found guilty of multiple crimes including “child sexual abuse” for which he was given 30 years for each of the 18 boys he abused, the newspaper reported.

He was also sentenced to 32 years for other crimes including “depriving someone of their liberty”, “obscenity” and “blackmail”, thus adding up to 571 years 11 months and 25 days, Dogan News Agencyand Hurriyet reported.

The paedophile started working at a high school offering a specialised religious education, known as an Imam Hatip school, in 2012 but lived at the school between 2013 and 2015, the newspaper said.

At one point, the former cleaner would physically hit the children, force them to watch pornographic films, make them smoke as well as threaten the students, Hurriyet said.

The subject of child abuse has been under the spotlight in the past week after two recent separate incidents of child sexual abuse reported in local media shocked Turkey.

Following public outrage, the government was quick to respond by setting up a commission on preventing child abuse with officials including six government ministers.

The government said it would also consider introducing chemical castration, which involves using drugs to reduce libido, for child abusers.

Chemical castration had already been introduced in 2016 but the country's highest administrative court, the Council of State, halted its implementation last August.

Women's rights groups have opposed the measure, saying that the solution to stopping child sexual abuse was to stop giving reduced sentences to offenders.

The number of court rulings on child sexual abuse in Turkey has soared, rising from 3,778 in 2006 to 21,189 in 2016, according to justice ministry data cited by human rights groups.

He claimed that although PML-N had 100 seats but PTI was the largest party in the country.

Will Continue Struggle For Sanctity of Vote: Nawaz Sharif

Former Prime Minister and Ex PML President Mian Nawaz Sharif
Former Prime Minister and Ex PML President Mian Nawaz Sharif said that he will continue struggle for the sanctity of vote.

Addressing PML N’s Central Working Committee’s (CWC) session in Lahore, he said that doctrine of necessity was used in the past to justify illegal and unlawful governments.

He said that politicians are a soft target, adding that the sanctity of vote is nowhere to be seen.

He said that his party was the first one to initiate a case against dictators who introduced martial law in the country and lamented that not even a single case was lodged against dictators.

“Where is your vote’s dignity, where is ours?” said Nawaz to the gathering.

He further said that people are afraid of taking action against dictatorial forces.

Nawaz said that it was not easy working under the current situation.

“Was Pakistan made to function under such a system?” He said. “Unfortunately, I do not accept this system,” added the former prime minister.

He further said that people want something else but ‘certain forces’ want something else.

Earlier, Nawaz also expressed displeasure over the verdict of his disqualification from the party presidency, saying it was like a dictatorial decision.

He added that there were no dictators ruling the country at present but the decisions taking place were like the ones made during dictatorships.

However, he said, the entire nation knew what happened with political leaders and parties.

Google not obligated to vet websites:German court rules

Google
Google is not obligated to ensure websites are free from defamatory content before displaying links to them in search results, Germany’s highest court ruled on Tuesday.

The case, which comes in the context of debate about the so-called “right to be forgotten”, had been brought by two individuals seeking Google to prevent its search engine from displaying links to websites on which they were verbally attacked by other internet users.

They wanted Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc, to set up search filters to keep those websites from appearing in future search results, information about the users who had posted the offending comments and payment of damages, saying Google was partly responsible for the violation of their rights.

The German Federal Court of Justice said, however, that a search engine operator need only take action if it is notified of a clearly recognisable violation of individuals’ rights, rather than checking ahead of time whether the content complies with the rules.

“Instituting a general duty to inspect the content would seriously call into question the business model of search engines, which is approved by lawmakers and wanted by society,” the court said in a statement.

“Without the help of such search engines it would be impossible for individuals to get meaningful use out of the internet due to the unmanageable flood of data it contains,” it added.

In May 2014, the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) ruled that people could ask search engines, such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing, to remove inadequate or irrelevant information from web results appearing under searches for people’s names - dubbed the “right to be forgotten”.

Google has since received requests for the removal of more than 2.4 million website links and accepted about 43 percent of them, according to its transparency report.

Woman harassed at PML-N rally
A woman present at the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) rally was harassed here on Tuesday.

The woman, a resident of Kasur, is a member of the PML-N women’s wing. “I came here to support the party, but the treatment by those present here is shameful,” she said.

Speaking to the media after the incident, she further said that it does not seem that those who misbehaved were from the ruling party.

"Our PML-N brothers are not of this sort."

She added that the men pulled at the women's dupattas, used abusive language and assaulted women.

The incident occurred when men entered the women enclosure after Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif's speech.

Pictures from the rally clearly show men present at the rally misbehaving with the woman.

Women in the enclosure made efforts to save the girl and even used sticks to hit the men misbehaving with the girl and afterward managed to escort her out of the enclosure.

Maryam Nawaz, in her tweet, asked the chief minister of the province to take notice of the incident as it is "not PML-N ethos".

Taking notice of the incident, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, said those responsible will be punished under the law and those responsible are being identified through video.

Sanaullah assured that a case would be registered for the incident. He, however, said that misbehaving in political rallies started in PTI rallies.

Punjab government spokesman also expressed regret at the incident and said that improved measures were taken during the rally for women.

The spokesperson also reiterated that those responsible for misbehaving with the woman would be persecuted under the law.

PML-N renegade MNA Mian Tariq Mehmood joins PTI

PML-N renegade MNA Mian Tariq Mehmood joins PTI
Member of National Assembly (MNA) Mian Tariq Mehmood who parted ways with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) last week has joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday.

MNA from NA-98 constituency of Gujranwala, Mehmood had parted ways with PML-N last week along with two former Members of Provincial Assembly (MPA) belonging to PML-N.

The ex-PML-N lawmaker met with disqualified member of PTI and former secretary general Jahangir Khan Tareen following which party chief Imran Khan convened a meeting with him in Bani Gala and formally welcomed him to PTI.

Last week, PML-N suffered a political blow in Gujranwala after Mian Tariq Mehmood and two former MPAs namely Mian Azhar Javed and Dr Ghulam Sarwar belonging to the federally ruling party parted ways with the organisation.

Sources had reported at the time that MNA Mehmood was to contest in the General Elections 2018 against defence minister Khurram Dastagir.

Chairmen and vice-chairmen of three municipal committees and chairmen and vice-chairmen of 13 Union Councils (UC) also parted ways with PML-N the same day.

5G wireless race heats up

5G wireless race heats up
The race to bring super-fast 5G wireless services to market is heating up with the first commercial deployments of the much-anticipated technology expected at the end of the year.

Talk about 5G’s potential to pave the way to a world of self-driving cars, lightening-fast video downloads and smart cities have dominated the Mobile World Congress for years. But at the event in Barcelona this year, companies were full of concrete announcements of early versions of 5G uses.

The first commercial 5G roll-outs begin this year and next in the United States, Korea and Japan, and the wireless industry is counting on the new technology to trigger a wave of growth in equipment sales and mobile services.

China’s Huawei unveiled in Barcelona what it said is the world’s first commercial chipset that meet the standards of 5G wireless networks, which are better suited for virtual reality and high definition video.

KT Corp, South Korea’s largest telecoms firm which exhibited several 5G services at the Pyeongchang Winter Games, displayed at the congress what it said was the world’s first 5G tablet.

The telecoms industry only agreed to the first common 5G standards in December and analysts cautioned that the development of the network still has a long way to go.

Much of what is being billed as 5G in fact "resembles more LTE++", or an improved version of the existing 4G network in use in most developed nations, said Carole Manero, director of studies at IDATE, a French think tank on the digital economy.

"There is a lot of marketing use of 5G," she added.

Huge investments

The next common 5G standards will only be announced later this year so "what is being proposed now is just a first version, many evolutions will follow, as was the case with 4G," said BMI Research analyst Dexter Thillien.

Tech firms are spending heavily to develop products that take advantage of the network’s possibilities.

"We are investing heavily in 5G, nearly 600 million dollars per year in research and development," said Huawei executive director and president of products and solutions Ryan Ding.

Telecoms operators are also investing heavily to develop 5G networks for fear of falling behind their competitors.

5G will account for 14 percent of global wireless connections by 2025, according to GSMA, the global mobile operators association.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Hoettges has estimated the cost of providing 5G networks in Europe alone will be EUR300-500 billion ($370-615 billion).

The telecoms industry will invest $275 billion in the United States to develop 5G networks there, Sprint chief executive Marcelo Claure said Monday at the mobile congress in Barcelona.

Europe lagging

While the European Union wants European companies to start offering 5G in 2020, spending to develop the network has been lower than in Asia or the United States.

The timescales vary widely on a country by country basis but the USA and China are the most likely winners to be the first" in 5G deployment, Nokia chief executive Rajeev Suri said on Sunday.

He said he still believed some European operators would start to move up to 5G next year.

In Europe telecoms firms are focusing their 5G efforts on business uses instead of by the general public as in other regions.

European telecom operators are more cautious because the move to 4G by consumers was lower in Europe than elsewhere, said Thillien of BMI Research.

"European operators know that demand will be low by the public. The y were burned by 4G and see that European consumers are more sceptical," he added.

Nawaz parts ways with Chaudhry Nisar: sources

Nawaz parts ways with Chaudhry Nisar: sources
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has parted ways with his long-term associate Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, sources informed.

Nawaz decided to not extend an invitation to Chaudhry Nisar, who has been associated with the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) for over three decades, to the Central Working Committee (CWC) session held earlier today.

The reported decision comes after Nisar openly opposed Nawaz's stance on the party's political strategy following the Supreme Court's July 28 verdict that ousted the former from holding public office.

According to sources, Nawaz was not ready to invite Nisar despite the insistence of Shehbaz Sharif, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and Ayaz Sadiq.

'Issue between Nisar, Nawaz will be resolved'

Earlier this month, on February 15, Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique had said that the issue between Nawaz and Nisar will be resolved.

The federal minister was speaking on the recent issue between the two leaders over the selection of the route for Nawaz’s motorcade following the Panama case July 28 verdict.

Rafique had said that Nawaz had not given any statement related to Nisar, adding that he is the one who suggested to Nawaz to take the Grand Trunk road route instead of the Motorway for reaching Lahore during the PML-N president's August rally.

The statement comes after Nawaz in an apparent jibe at Nisar, who has publicly expressed reservations over various party policies, said that “certain people had advised me against taking out the rally through GT Road”.

Imran invites Nisar to join PTI fold

PTI chairman Imran Khan on February 11 had invited the former interior minister to join his party's fold.

In his informal conversation with newspersons, Khan had said it would be better if Nisar joins his party, promising his support to the former interior minister even he chooses to contest the next election as an independent candidate.

"At times, one has to have a bigger heart in politics," he had said.

In first address as PML-N president: Shehbaz promises victory in elections

Shehbaz Sharif
Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif, in his first address as the newly selected PML-N president, promised victory in the coming general polls.

"Nawaz Sharif's party presidency was snatched, but our love for him remains."

During the rally in Patoki, Shehbaz criticised the PTI chief and said he has lied to the people and the Orange Line Metro train project was also delayed due to him.

"Imran Khan has lied to the people for the last four and a half years," said the Punjab chief minister.

"He [Imran] had claimed that he would create multiple dams in KP, but he did not make any. He is also now building the metro project which he had criticised repeatedly," said Shehbaz.

Shehbaz said he had sent a defamation notice of billions of rupees to Imran, but the PTI chairman never once came to court.

He added that he will now plead the court to create a larger bench for the case to be heard.

Shehbaz, reiterating his government's performance in Punjab, said the provincial government has improved the medical infrastructure of Punjab."We have installed CT scan machines to facilitate the poor."

He also said the government will continue to improve upon educational institutions and improve the infrastructure of the country.

"The government fulfilled its promise and ended loadshedding in the country," further said the provincial chief executive.

Shifting his focus to Karachi, the newly selected PML-N president said that if the metropolis votes for PML-N, the party will ensure "Karachi becomes the next Lahore".

"Karachi used to be known as the city of lights, now it has garbage on every street," said the new PML-N president.

Axact CEO Shoaib Sheikh sent to jail on judicial remand

KARACHI: Chief Executive Officer of Axact, Shoaib Sheikh has been sent to jail on judicial remand till March 03 in money laundering case a day after his acquittal was cancelled in the same case by the Sindh High Court.

The Federal Investigation Agency presented the accused before the court of Additional District & Sessions Judge South Sara Junejo today.

On Monday the SHC set aside the acquittal of Shoaib Sheikh, and two directors of a money exchange company by the trial court in a Rs170.17m money laundering case. The FIA later arrested Sheikh following rejection of their protective bail by the SHC’s single bench.

An additional district and sessions court had acquitted the Axact CEO and two money exchange company directors in Rs.170.17 million money laundering case last year and the FIA had appealed against the verdict, citing grave miscarriage of justice to the state in the form of huge monetary loss caused to the national exchequer by all the accused.

Anyone dumping garbage in public spaces will be prosecuted : Sindh govt

garbage
The Sindh government will proceed against those littering the city's public places, bazaars and roads. A notification issued by the Sindh home department on Monday states, anyone found dumping garbage on public property will be prosecuted.

While the department's attempts to clear trash piles from Karachi and Hyderabad have not been as successful as anticipated, especially considering the political spats and rising costs, it has, however, banned littering in places that are not designated garbage dumps.

Further, the notification added that action will also be taken against anyone who resorts to burning rubbish piles in the city's public places, bazaars or roads.

The dumping of trash in open areas does not only pollute the environment but also affect the health of those living there, stated the notification.

The water commission appointed on the orders of Supreme Court had taken notice of industrial, medical and domestic waste being dumped in open areas.

During a hearing held earlier in February, Justice (retd) Amir Hani Muslim, who was heading the commission, observed that there was no improvement in the state of sanitation in Karachi. While talking about his recent visit around the city, he mentioned of seeing garbage dumped unattended on various spots of the metropolis.

Justice (retd) Amir Hani also spoke about the cleanliness of public hospitals, telling the provincial health secretary that a very sorry state of hygiene was observed during his recent inspection of the facilities in Karachi.

He said public hospitals were not disposing of medical waste as per rules, therefore, it could be seen dumped in streets close to the hospitals, one of them being Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in the city.

Health Secretary Fazlullah Pechuho admitted to the facts and said his department would make efforts to improve the condition.

FIA arrests Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh in money-laundering case

FIA arrests Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh
Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh was arrested on Monday evening after the Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected his protective bail application, which was submitted after the court approved the Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) appeal against the acquittal of those accused in the Axact money laundering case.

The Axact CEO's legal counsel had requested the court to grant a three-day protective bail.

Will proceed against Shoaib Sheikh according to law

The FIA director confirmed that the Axact CEO was arrested according to the court's direction. The director added that the FIA will proceed against Shoaib Sheikh according to the law and that proceedings will begin once the court's detailed verdict has been delivered.

According to the FIA director, further interrogation of Shoaib Sheikh will be conducted. Additionally the FIA has secured the services of senior lawyers to proceed against the Axact CEO.

Shoaib Sheikh remained holed up to avoid arrest

Shaikh, arrived at court early morning, was present inside the court premises for around 10 hours. Personnel of the FIA, police and Rangers were instructed to arrest the Axact CEO after the SHC approved FIA's appeal.

Shaikh's legal counsel reportedly advised him to surrender to law-enforcement agencies as he had no other option after the rejection of his bail plea.

A division bench of the SHC, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, was hearing an appeal filed by the FIA against the acquittal of the Axact chief in a case pertaining to illegal transfer of Rs170.17 million to a Dubai-based firm, Chanda Exchange Company, in April 2014.

The two-member SHC bench also sent the case to the trial court for further proceedings.

Session court ordered to charge accused

The sessions court was earlier ordered to charge the accused persons and wrap up the case within three months.

The court ordered Axact's CEO Shoaib Shaikh and others accused in the case to appear before the trial court on March 3.

The accused include, Chanda Exchange Company's Mohammad Younis and Junaid, who allegedly received 170 million rupees through 116 cheques.

The case

The Axact scandal surfaced in May 2015, when The New York Times published a report had claimed the company sold fake diplomas and degrees online through hundreds of fictitious schools, making “tens of millions of dollars annually”.

The FIA had then filed a plea against the acquittal of Shaikh in 2016 in a money laundering case, arguing that he was exonerated from the charges by the trial court despite strong evidence that proved his involvement in money laundering.

Afridi's three wicket haul fires Karachi to 27-run win against Qalandars
Shahid Afridi's three wickets for 19 runs gave a 27-run victory to the Karachi Kings against Lahore Qalandars in the highly-charged match held at the Dubai International Stadium.

Courtesy late-hitting by Ravi Bopara, Karachi Kings scored a fighting total of 159 runs against Lahore Qalandars, however, the Qalandars lost their momentum after the dismissal of skipper Brendon McCullum.

Second Innings

Sunil Narine was the first to be dismissed by the Kings as he departed after giving an outside edge to the wicket-keeper Muhammad Rizwan.

A brilliant catch by Ravi Bopara ended opener Fakhar Zaman's stay at the crease.

A failed reverse sweep by skipper McCullum costed the skipper his wicket on the ball of Imad Wasim. He departed after scoring 44 runs.

Umar Akmal (6) failed to anchor the innings built by skipper McCullum, he was stumped on the ball of Afridi.

Afridi took his third wicket of the match as middle-order batsman Sohail Akhtar returned after giving a catch to the long-on fielder.

Shinwari took his second wicket of Agha Salman after scoring just 15 runs.

A terrific catch at the point ended Ramdin's stay at the crease and Qalandars' hope in the match.

First Innings

Kings overpowered Qalandars in the start of the match as in just 14 balls Joe Denly scored five boundaries and a six. Things were turning usual for Qalandars until a breakthrough given by Yasir Shah. Denly departed on a score of 28 runs.

On the very next ball, Mustafizur Rahman turned the odds in favour of Qalandars, with the lbw wicket of in-form batsman Babar Azam. The Pakistani middle order batsman was dismissed for a duck.

Khurram Manzoor was next to go. On the score of eight runs, he was caught by Umar Akmal on the mid-on, on the bowl of Sunil Narine. A wild slog which didnt even clear infield.

A terrific volleyball catch by Umar Akmal assisted by Shaheen Afridi at the long-on ended Ingram's inning. A sight which won't be forgotten.

The next to depart was Muhammad Rizwan, who edged the carrom ball, bowled by Narine to skipper Brendon McCullum at the first slip.

A catch and bowled by Sohail Khan ended Imad Wasim's time on the crease.

Sohail Khan got the prize wicket of Shahid Afridi on the very next after getting hit for a six.

Qalandars made three changes in their squad tonight.

Gulraiz Sadaf, Raza Hasan and Cameron Delport were dropped as Sohail Khan, Denesh Ramdin and Agha Salman made their place in the final playing-11. Meanwhile, on the other hand, Usman Khan Shinwari replaced injured Muhammad Amir for the Kings.

Axact CEO Shoaib Sheikh may be arrested as SHC overturns his acquittal

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court today accepted the appeal of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) against acquittal of Axact CEO Shoaib Sheikh in money laundering case and directed the lower court to conduct retrial and decide the case within three months.

After the order, the FIA sought to arrest Sheikh but he rushed inside the courtroom. His lawyers insisted that he should not be arrested as the SHC has not ordered his arrest and be allowed to approach the court to seek protective bail.

A two-member SHC bench headed by Naimatullah Phulpoto heard the case.

The Supreme Court had earlier this month directed the SHC and the Islamabad High Court hearing the Axact fake degree cases to wrap up the appeals against the acquittal of suspects in a matter of weeks.

Aggrieved with the acquittal of Axact CEO and director M/s Chanda exchange Mohammad Younus and branch manager Mohammad Junaid in a money laundering case, FIA appealed against the acquittal of the accused without framing of charge and recording of the prosecution evidence by the trial court in 2016. The FIA pleaded to set aside the acquittal.

According to the FIA, accused Shoaib Sheikh opened an account in a bank in the name of his mother and while using mandate in his own name, issued 116 cheques through his own signatures in favour of vendors of a Dubai based company allegedly owned by the accused.

The cheques were delivered by the Axact employees to the co-accused directors and branch manager of M/s Chanda Exchange though there were no business deal between the two. The FIA submitted that the trial court failed to appreciate the evidence which was not denied by the accused connecting the accused with the illegal money transfer which is punishable under foreign exchange regulation Act. The FIA submitted that Axact transferred over Rs.170 million to Dubai based vendors through M/s Chanda exchange.

Pakistan to attend WTO talks in New Delhi upon Indian invitation: report

KARACHI: Pakistan’s Minister of Commerce Pervaiz Malik will attend an informal WTO ministerial meeting taking place in New Delhi on March 19-20, The Indian Express reported Monday.

Quoting unnamed diplomatic sources, the newspaper said the Pakistani side has confirmed the participation of the minister. The invitation comes in the wake of the late-December secret back-channel negotiations between the two national security advisors, Ajit Doval and Nasser Janjua, it said.

This will be the first high-level visit of a Pakistani leader since December 2016 when Sartaj Aziz, then foreign affairs advisor, visited India for the Heart of Asia conference on Afghanistan in Amritsar.

The meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Paris meeting during which a US-led anti-Pak motion, which Islamabad believed was moved at India’s behest, was passed.

According to the newspaper, the government of Narendra Modi is ‘under pressure by the international community to reach out to the Pakistani government and its civil society’, and due to this it has ‘withdrawn its objections to participating in multilateral meetings with Pakistan’.

On Friday, Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar stood alongside Afghan president Ashraf Ghani, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Turkmenistan President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, at the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline inauguration ceremony and called it a “peace pipeline” that will deliver both gas and peace to the troubled South Asian region.

The rival countries, the newspaper said, decided in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Kazakhstan last June to not to ‘contaminate every international meeting with their public quarrels’. India hosted a security conference of SCO members earlier this month also attended by Pakistan.
