High court judge Justice Ayub Marwat injured in Peshawar targeted attack
Peshawar High Court Judge Justice Muhammad Ayub was shot and injured Thursday morning by unknown men, police said.

According to Cantt Superintendent of Police (SP) Qaseem Riaz, Justice Ayub was in his car when he was shot at by unknown assailants in Hayatabad’s Phase V area.

Justice Ayub's driver was also injured in the firing by unknown assailants on a motorcycle, police said. "The judge's car was shot at from all four sides with a pistol and Kalashnikov," officials added.

The injured judge, who was shifted to a hospital, is said to be out of danger.

Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth said the judge was shot in his arm and is out of danger. “I have asked the police to apprehend the attackers as soon as possible,” Justice Seth said.

In response to the incident, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council has called for a strike and demanded the culprits behind the attack be apprehended as soon as possible.

Justice Mohammad Ayub Khan took the reins of the Peshawar High Court in 2017. Before his elevation, Justice Ayub served as judge of accountability court in Peshawar.

He also served as district and sessions judge and remained posted in different stations. Justice Ayub also served as registrar of the PHC.

Another Blood Pressure Medication Recalled

Blood Presure
Numerous blood pressure drugs are now involved in the recall that began in late July over a suspected cancer-causing compound.

Another company has announced a recall of a blood pressure medication due to contamination concerns.

Macleods Pharmaceuticals Limited has informed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it is voluntarily recalling one lot of Losartan Potassium/Hydrochlorothiazide 100mg/25mg combination tablets.

Company officials said they detected trace amounts in the products of an impurity called N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), a pharmaceutical ingredient the FDA has classified as a "probable human carcinogen."

The Losartan tablets are used to treat hypertension and hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy.

Macleods officials said they have had no reports of anyone with adverse effects from the recalled products.

Liverpool thrash Watford to stay at the top

Liverpool demolished Watford
Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk both struck twice as Liverpool demolished Watford 5-0 to stay ahead of a charging Manchester City at the top of the Premier League on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men calmed fears over their staying power following a recent dip in form as they chase down their first top-flight title since 1990.

Defending champions City finally broke the resistance of West Ham at the Etihad Stadium in the second half to stay just one point behind Liverpool, while third-placed Tottenham slipped to a damaging 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Arsenal swatted aside a limp Bournemouth team 5-1 to remain in fourth place, one point clear of Manchester United, with Romelu Lukaku taking advantage of the absence of Marcus Rashford to score twice in a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Liverpool came into their match after three draws in four league matches but Mane settled their nerves early, heading home a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold before the pair teamed up again, with the Senegalese forward producing an audacious backheel strike.

Divock Origi extended the lead midway through the second period and defender Virgil van Dijk netted twice late on to complete the rout.

“The boys showed how much they enjoy the game and the situation,” a delighted Klopp told the BBC.

“It was an important sign. You know what was written and said about us. It is of course not right. These boys are outstanding and today they showed so much passion.”

Govt, army brief parliamentary leaders on Indian aggression,Pakistan's response

Parliament House in Islamabad
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and military spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Wednesday gave an in-camera briefing to parliamentary leaders on Indian aggression and Pakistan's response to it.

The briefing, held at the Parliament House in Islamabad, also had Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa in presence.

Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari attended the session along with party delegations.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) delegation included Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Raja Zafarul Haq, Mushahidullah Khan, Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Sanaullah and Marriyum Aurangzeb.

Sources said the PPP delegates included Khursheed Shah, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Sherry Rehman, Saleem Mandviwala and Raza Rabbani.

"A special meeting of parliamentary leaders was convened at Parliament House today to brief national leadership on the ongoing security situation. The parliamentarians were briefed by FM (foreign minister), followed by DG ISPR," read a press statement issued after the session. "COAS also interacted with the forum after the brief."

It said the participants unanimously expressed that they stand united against any aggression against Pakistan and will support the government and its institutions unconditionally.

"They also expressed hope that those who want peace and stability will prevail, as war is not an option but a failure of policy," the statement said. "National leaders of all political parties offered their services for the cause of peace and progress."

In the end, the Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker thanked the leadership for their unequivocal support at the moment of crisis, the statement added.

Foreign Minister Qureshi said they took parliamentary leaders into confidence at the meeting.

"The meeting went well; I am thankful to all the parliamentary leaders," he said, adding that the participants listened to the briefing with patience.

Qureshi said, the parliamentary leaders expressed complete solidarity with Pakistan, the government and armed forces of the country.

"Today, the parliamentary leadership of Pakistan was given an in-camera briefing. I informed the participants of our diplomatic efforts and Foreign Office activities, our engagements and strategy. The DG ISPR, while representing the military's views, informed about the operations undertaken and the measures taken by Pakistan against [Indian] aggression," he said.

"And then Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa took everyone into confidence on the overall situation, our alertness, measures taken by us and the way we have been proceeding."

The foreign minister said he was pleased to tell the nation that there was complete consensus, adding, "All political parties, their leadership present there expressed solidarity with Pakistan, resolved to safeguard the interests of Pakistan, and announced complete solidarity with the government and armed forces of Pakistan".

"I, on behalf of the government and Prime Minister Imran Khan, want to thank the entire parliamentary leadership," he said.

Qureshi said during the briefing he also received calls from foreign ministers of China, Iran and Saudi Arabia, who offered to play their role in de-escalation of tensions in the region.

"This is clear that PAF's action boosted the morale of the nation, it was a remarkable action, which establishes the capability of the Pakistani armed forces. India and Modi should act sensibly and avoid further escalation, or else there will unrest in the region," Shehbaz said.

Asked about the possibility of an attack from India and Pakistan's capability to tackle it, the NA opposition leader maintained the armed forces of the country are fully prepared for every situation.

When asked about the session and participants' morale, Zardari said, "The morale is high".

"The briefing went well," the DG ISPR said, in response to a question by a journalist after the session concluded.

Defence Minister Pervez Khattak said, "Today’s briefing was very important as this was the demand of the opposition. It was also thought that we need to stand together. Whether it is the opposition or government this is Pakistan’s problem. We requested army chief to give a briefing and because of that briefing there was satisfaction and the actual story was understood and the propaganda was revealed."

He said the prime minister did not have the programme to attend the meeting so why would the opposition object, as they were informed earlier that the premier would not be present.

"It was also not their [opposition] demand," the minister said.

Regarding heightened tension with New Delhi, Khattak said, "We are working to defuse the situation and are hopeful it would be defused."

Joint session of Parliament to be held today

A joint session of Parliament
A joint session of Parliament has been summoned today (Thursday) to send a strong message to New Delhi that the nation is united in the face of Indian aggression.

The joint session of Parliament will be held at 3pm.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan will table the motion to discuss the prevailing external threats.

A day earlier, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shot down two Indian aircraft inside Pakistani airspace and took a pilot in custody.

Addressing the nation after the incident, Prime Minister Imran Khan once again invited India for talks and urged better sense should prevail.

"I want to now address India and say let sanity prevail. Let’s think sensibly. All wars in the world have been started on miscalculations on the time and the human cost of war. This was the same with the First World War, with the Second World War, the war on terror, the Vietnam War. The history of the world shows us wars have always been miscalculation," he asserted.

"I ask India; with our weapons capability.... on both sides, can we afford a miscalculation? It will neither be in my control or Modi’s. The hurt that has been caused due to the Pulwama attack, we want to come to the table and talk about terrorism that affects us both. We are ready. Let better sense prevail," the premier urged.

Risk of 'retaliation still present' after Pakistan's 'effective response to India: COAS

Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa
Pakistan gave an "effective response to India" but the risk of a possible retaliation was "still present", the Army chief said Wednesday during an in-camera briefing to the parliamentary leaders on New Delhi's aggression and Islamabad's response.

Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said so as he addressed the Parliament House in the capital city where Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and military spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor were also present.

Gen Bajwa stressed that while the forces were fully ready to defend the country against any possible untoward event, none of the Pakistan Air Forces' (PAF) warplanes had violated the Line of Control.

The leaders of the international powers have expressed serious concerns about the rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed South Asian nations, the Army chief mentioned, and that they were playing their required role in a bid to deescalate.

The COAS related that Prime Minister Imran Khan had once again invited India for peace talks and urged for better sense to prevail.

"We want to come to the table and talk about terrorism that affects us both. We are ready. Let better sense prevail," Khan had noted.

Gen Bajwa said he hoped that India would act sensibly and take the premier's offer for another chance at peace to be a positive step.

Others present in the meeting comprised Shehbaz Sharif, the opposition leader in the National Assembly and former chief minister of Punjab, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, as well as a delegation of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) — including former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Raja Zafarul Haq, Mushahidullah Khan, Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Sanaullah, and Marriyum Aurangzeb — and another of the PPP, including Khursheed Shah, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Sherry Rehman, Saleem Mandviwala, and Raza Rabbani.

Anti-Spy Agreement With China Over Huawei Situation

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is going to sign an anti-spy agreement with China in exchange for permit for the Chinese IT-giant Huawei to continue its activities in Germany
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is going to sign an anti-spy agreement with China in exchange for permit for the Chinese IT-giant Huawei to continue its activities in Germany, local media reported on Wednesday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is going to sign an anti-spy agreement with China in exchange for permit for the Chinese IT-giant Huawei to continue its activities in Germany, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to the WirtschaftsWoche media outlet, Merkel's economic adviser Lars-Hendrik Roeller has recently visited China to discuss the possible agreement.

The possible agreement will be reportedly a German government's attempt to find an alternative to ban Huawei's activities in the country.

On February 8, German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier said that the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) was investigating rumors that Beijing's Huawei devices enabled the tech giant to gather data from the German mobile network and hand it over to the Chinese authorities.

Huawei has recently faced allegations that it is linked to the Chinese government and even has been spying on its behalf, something that the company has vehemently denied.

Last year, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States banned the Chinese telecommunications giant from participating in government contracts, while several other countries voiced their own concerns over Huawei's activities.
