non-bailable arrest warrants of PTM leaders

ATC issues non-bailable arrest warrants of PTM leaders
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi has issued non-bailable arrest warrants of Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leaders Manzoor Pashteen and Mohsin Javed Dawar in a case related to inflammatory speech and sedition

The ATC made major progress in inflammatory speech and sedition case against the PTM leaders Manzoor Pashteen. During the hearing, the anti-terrorism court approved the interim challan against Pashteen and Dawar which declared the PTM leaders as fugitives.

Later, the court issued non-bailable arrest warrants against them and ordered the authorities to arrest and produce the accused till March 9.

According to the police challan, five more arrests were made against those nominated in the case. The arrested persons included Javed, Tahir, Ibrahim, Naimat and Sarwar over allegedly delivering objectionable remarks against the national institutions.

It is pertinent to mention here that the case was registered against PTM’s Ali Wazir and others in the Sohrab Goth police station in Karachi.

Earlier in February, the ATC had ordered to block National Computerized Identity Cards (CNICs) of Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leaders Manzoor Pashteen and Mohsin Javed Dawar.

Both Manzoor Pashteen and Mohsin Dawar had been declared fugitives in the case, after their continued non-appearance before the court.

The PTM, formerly the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement, gained momentum following the extra-judicial murder of Naqeebullah Mehsud in Karachi.

It sought capital punishment for the prime suspect in the Naqeebullah murder case, former SSP Malir Rao Anwar, recovery of missing persons and removal of landmines in tribal areas.

Iran dismissed the Europe's offer for 2015 nuclear deal

Iran dismissed the Europe's offer for 2015 nuclear deal
Amid the international pressure to suspend its nuclear programme, Iran on Sunday dismissed Europe’s offer for an informal meeting on the troubled 2015 deal, saying the time is not "suitable" as Washington has failed to lift sanctions

The European Union’s political director earlier this month proposed the informal meeting involving all parties of the Vienna deal, a proposition accepted by US President Joe Biden’s administration.

Following Biden’s election, the US, the European parties to the deal -- France, Germany and Britain -- and Tehran have been trying to salvage the accord, which granted Iran international sanctions relief in return for restrictions on its nuclear programme.

The accord has been nearing collapse since former president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew in 2018 and reimposed crippling sanctions as part of a "maximum pressure" campaign against Tehran.

"Considering the recent positions and actions of the United States and the three European countries, (Iran) does not consider the time suitable to hold the informal meeting proposed by the European coordinator," foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said in a statement.

"There has still been no change in the US positions and behaviour yet," he added, saying the Biden administration has continued "Trump’s failed policy of maximum pressure".

Biden has signalled readiness to revive the deal, but insists Iran first return to all its nuclear commitments, most of which it suspended in response to the sanctions, while Tehran demands Washington take the first step by scrapping the sanctions.

"While we are disappointed at Iran’s response, we remain ready to reengage in meaningful diplomacy to achieve a mutual return to compliance," a White House spokesperson said Sunday.

"We will be consulting with our P5+1 partners on the best way forward," the spokesperson added, referring to the group of the five permanent members on the UN Security Council, plus Germany.

The foreign ministry statement comes ahead of a quarterly meeting Monday of the United Nations nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors, which is likely to discuss Iran’s recent restrictions of some nuclear inspections.

"Remember: Trump failed to meet because of his ill-advised ‘Max Failure’," Khatibzadeh wrote on Twitter shortly after his statement.

Tehran’s position is unchanged "with sanctions in place... Censuring is NOT diplomacy. It doesn’t work with Iran", he added.

End sanctions
The US "has not even announced its commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities" under the deal and the UN Security Council resolution that enshrined it, the spokesman said in the statement.

"America must end its illegal and unilateral sanctions and return to its (deal) commitments. This needs neither negotiations nor resolutions," he added.

Iran "will answer action with action, and just as it will return to (deal) commitments in accordance with the lifting of sanctions, it will respond to hostile actions and behaviours in the same way".

Khatibzadeh said Tehran would continue to consult with other parties to the nuclear agreement, and European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell "in his capacity as the (deal) coordinator, both bilaterally and multilaterally".

Iran last Tuesday started to restrict some site inspections by the IAEA, in continuation of suspended nuclear commitments in response to the US failure to lift its sanctions.

London, Paris and Berlin said they "deeply regret" the move and that they were "united in underlining the dangerous nature of this decision".

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said last week an interim three-month deal agreed during a visit to Tehran was "far from an ideal situation", but will allow the body to continue monitoring "all the key activities".

It will facilitate "time for the indispensable diplomacy that will be deployed", he added.

Under the temporary agreement, data on Iran’s nuclear programme "will be stored and not handed over to the IAEA," according to Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation has said that if US sanctions are still not lifted after three months, it will start erasing the recordings.

FBR has exceeded its target for the first eight months of the current fiscal year

FBR has exceeded its target for the first eight months of the current fiscal year
The Federal Board of Revenue has exceeded its target for the first eight months of the current fiscal year (July-February) by fetching Rs2,916 billion against its desired target of Rs2,898 billion, seeing an increase of Rs18 billion

As per the provisional collection figures, the FBR collected net revenue of Rs2,916 billion during the Jul-Feb period, which has exceeded the target of Rs2,898 billion. This represents a growth of close 6% compared to the Rs2,750 billion collected during the same period last year.

The monthly net collection for February was Rs343 billion against the required target of Rs325 billion, representing an increase of 8% over February 2019 and 106% of the target. The collection figures are likely to improve further when book adjustments are finalised.

On the other hand, the gross collections increased from Rs2,823 billion during this period last year to Rs3,068 billion, showing an increase of nearly 9%. The number of refunds disbursed was Rs152 billion compared to Rs79 billion paid last year, showing an increase of 97%. This reflects FBR’s resolve to fast-track refunds to prevent liquidity shortages in the industry.

The increase in revenue is a reflection of growing economic activities in the country despite the second wave of coronavirus. During March-June 2021, it is expected that this revenue performance will improve substantially compared to 2020 when economic activities were disrupted.

Meanwhile, the FBR’s efforts to broaden the tax base are also paying dividends as early signs suggest such efforts are bearing fruit.

As of February 28, 2021, income tax returns for the tax year 2020 reached 2.62 million compared to 2.43 million last year, showing an increase of 8%.

The tax deposited with returns was Rs49.6 billion compared to only Rs31 billion, showing an increase of 60%.

Last year, the country’s tax authority had set the final date for submission of returns as of February 28. However, FBR’s decision to adhere to December 8 as the last date has been vindicated as more returns and higher tax payments were recorded during tax year 2020 as compared to 2019.

Besides this, the FBR has issued notices to nearly 2.1 million taxpayers who were supposed to file returns or have filed a nil return or misdeclared their assets or have not been filing a return for sales tax to comply with their legal obligations. The exercise is eliciting an encouraging response. However, those who are not complying will be pursued diligently.

The FBR has also released information about tier-I retailers who have been integrated with the POS system. According to the information, 9,952 sales points have been integrated with the Point of Sales Linked Invoicing System.

The Pakistan Customs has initiated a focused counter-smuggling drive. During February 2021, smuggled goods worth Rs4.08 billion have been seized, while in February 2020 smuggled goods worth Rs3.02 billion were seized, thus showing a monthly increase of 35.18%.

Similarly, during the last eight months (July 2020-Feb 2021) of the current financial year, smuggled goods worth Rs39.52 billion have been seized as compared to Rs25.10 billion from July 2019 to February 2020 of the last financial year, thus showing an increase of 57.45%.

Moreover, the value of seized goods of Rs39.52 billion in the eight months of the current FY has crossed the total value of seized goods of last year. In FY 2019-20, smuggled goods worth Rs36 billion were seized.

SC gives opinion on Presidential reference open Senate vote today

Supreme Court of Pakistan
The Supreme Court will today announce its opinion on the presidential reference seeking its view regarding holding the forthcoming Senate elections through open ballot

A five-judge larger bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed and comprising Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Yahya Afridi will pronounce the reserved opinion.

The court reserved its opinion after all the lawyers had concluded their arguments. At the last hearing, Justice Gulzar Ahmed observed that Parliament only passes resolutions for transparency of the electoral process.

Attorney General Khalid Javed after completion of the arguments of the lawyers in his rejoinder argued that the scrutiny of the vote could not hurt the secrecy. “The presidential reference is not based on a political question, but it seeks interpretation of the Article 226,” the AG argued.

“Will the supreme court’s opinion will be final,” Justice Yahya Afridi asked. “The government will be bound to the court’s opinion,” AG said. “A review plea could be filed over the court’s opinion,” Justice Afridi said.

“Review petition could not be filed over the reference,” the state lawyers. “The court have no relation with the politics, it will only interpret the constitution,” the chief justice said.

36 coronavirus related deaths in past 24 hours
Pakistan has recorded 36 more coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, surging the overall death toll to 12,896

The total count of active cases is 22,098 and the positivity rate stands at 3.63 per cent.

In the past 24 hours, as many as 1,094 patients have recovered from the virus in a day and 1,568 patients are still in critical condition.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), with the fresh inclusion of the infections in the country the national tally of cases now currently stands at 581,365.

Lahore Qalandars defeat Karachi Kings by 6 wickets in nail-biting contest

Lahore Qalandars defeat Karachi Kings by 6 wickets
Lahore Qalandars chased down a challenging total of 187 and won by six wickets against Karachi Kings, in the eleventh match of the Pakistan Super League's sixth season at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday.

Kings' Sharjeel Khan (64 off 39 balls) and Mohammad Nabi (57 off 35 balls) were able to steer the side to the sizeable total, after an early set back as the side lost three wickets inside of five overs.

However the Qalandars, when it was time for them to bat, were persistent and steady in their chase, and managed to hold on to six wickets in the process.

Opener Fakhar Zaman with his knock of 83 off 54 provided the impetus needed for the side to follow through after his departure at 17.2 overs and hit the target.

His efforts were aided by Ben Dunk (57 off 43) and David Wiese (31 off 9).

The build-up to the Karachi Kings-Lahore Qalandars match — dubbed the El Clásico of the PSL 2021 — had been huge to say the least, considering that both sides came in from similar positions, having won two out of their first three encounters.

Defending champions Kings had a slight edge over Qalandars due to better net run rate (NRR) as well as the advantage of the outcome of their face-off last year during the PSL 2020 final in which they defeated Qalandars.

The Qalandars' performance, today, however, showed that in the battle of the nerves, they can easily trounce any opponent.

In total, the two arch-rivals have played 12 matches, of which Karachi Kings bagged seven and Lahore Qalandars has now secured five.

At least seven dead on bloodiest day of Myanmar protests against coup

Myanmar protests against coup
Myanmar police fired on protesters on Sunday in the bloodiest day of weeks of demonstrations against a military coup and at least seven people were killed and several wounded, political and medical sources and media said.

Myanmar has been in chaos since the army seized power and detained elected government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and much of her party leadership on February 1, alleging fraud in a November election her party won in a landslide.

The coup, which brought a halt to tentative steps towards democracy after nearly 50 years of military rule, has drawn hundreds of thousands onto the streets and the condemnation of Western countries.

“Myanmar is like a battlefield,” the Buddhist-majority nation’s first Catholic cardinal, Charles Maung Bo, said on Twitter.

Police were out in force early and opened fire in different parts of the biggest city of Yangon after stun grenades, tear gas and shots in the air failed to break up crowds. Soldiers also reinforced police.

Several wounded people were hauled away by fellow protesters, leaving bloody smears on pavements, media images showed. One man died after being brought to a hospital with a bullet in the chest, said a doctor who asked not to be identified.

A woman died of a suspected heart attack after police swooped to break up a Yangon teachers’ protest with stun grenades, her daughter and a colleague said.

Police also opened fire in Dawei in the south, killing three and wounding several, politician Kyaw Min Htike told Reuters from the town.

The Myanmar Now media outlet reported two people had been killed in a protest in the second city of Mandalay.

Police and the spokesman for the ruling military council did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.

Police broke up protests in other towns, including Lashio in the northeast and Myeik in the deep south, residents and media said.

Junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing said last week authorities were using minimal force to deal with the protests.

Nevertheless, at least 10 protesters have now died in the turmoil. The army said a policeman has been killed.

The crackdown would appear to indicate determination by the military to impose its authority in the face of widespread defiance, not just on the streets but more broadly in the civil service, municipal administration, the judiciary, the education and health sectors and the media.

“The Myanmar security forces’ clear escalation in use of lethal force in multiple towns and cities [...] is outrageous and unacceptable,” Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of New York-based Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

Hundreds of protesters refused to leave the streets by early afternoon in Yangon. Many set up barricades while others chanted slogans and sang protest songs.

“If they attack us, we’ll defend. We’ll never kneel down to the military boots,” said Nyan Win Shein from one Yangon protest.

Early in the day, police swooped to disperse a teachers’ protest with stun grenades, sending the crowd fleeing. One teacher, Tin New Yee, died of a suspected heart attack, her daughter and a fellow teacher said.

Police also hurled stun grenades outside a Yangon medical school, sending doctors and students in white lab coats scattering. A group called the Whitecoat Alliance of medics said more than 50 medical staff had been arrested.

State-run MRTV television said more than 470 people had been arrested on Saturday when police launched the nationwide crackdown. It was not clear how many were detained on Sunday.

Youth activist Esther Ze Naw said earlier people were battling the fear they had lived with under military rule.

“It’s obvious they’re trying to instil fear in us by making us run and hide,” she said. “We can’t accept that.”

The police action came after state television announced that Myanmar’s United Nations envoy had been fired for betraying the country, after he urged the UN to use “any means necessary” to reverse the coup.

The ambassador, Kyaw Moe Tun, remained defiant.

“I decided to fight back as long as I can,” he told Reuters in New York.

While Western countries have condemned the coup and some have imposed limited sanctions, the generals have traditionally shrugged off diplomatic pressure. They have promised to hold a new election but not set a date.

Suu Kyi’s party and supporters said the result of the November vote must be respected.

Suu Kyi, 75, who spent nearly 15 years under house arrest, faces charges of illegally importing six walkie-talkie radios and of violating a natural disaster law by breaching coronavirus protocols. The next hearing in her case is on Monday.

House approves Biden’s $1.9tr Covid-19 relief plan

House approves Biden’s $1.9tr Covid-19 relief plan
The US House passed an enormous, $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package early on Saturday, hailed by Democrats as a critical step in funneling new funding towards vaccinations, overburdened local governments, and millions of families devastated by the pandemic.

Four days after the Covid-19 death toll surpassed 500,000 in the United States, the sprawling measure backed by President Joe Biden and seen as a moral imperative by many now heads to the Senate for consideration next week.

“After 12 months of death and despair, the American recovery begins tonight,” congressman Brendan Boyle told the House chamber shortly before lawmakers approved the package on a rare post-midnight vote of 219 to 212. No Republicans voted for the bill.

The sharply partisan result comes weeks after Biden’s January 20 inauguration, when he called for unity in the face of a once-in-a-century health crisis.

The package cleared the House despite a major setback for Democrats, when a key Senate official ruled on Thursday that the final version of the bill could not include a minimum wage hike.

Biden had campaigned extensively on raising the national minimum wage to $15 an hour, from a rate of $7.25 that has stood since 2009.

He aimed to include it in the rescue plan, which directly provides $1,400 cheques to most Americans and allots billions of dollars to boost vaccine delivery, help schools re-open and fund state and local governments.

It extends unemployment benefits, set to expire in mid-March, by about six months, as well as a moratorium on evictions for millions of people struggling to pay rent.

The bill is on track to be the second largest US stimulus ever, after the $2tr package Donald Trump signed last March to fight the pandemic’s devastating spread.

Even as the Senate parliamentarian ruled against including the minimum wage language in the bill as written under budget reconciliation rules, Democrats kept the provision, highlighting their “fight for 15” as a top party priority.

Khan, who was appointed to his position in February 2020, is representing the government in the presidential reference seeking the Supreme Court's opinion on holding Senate elections through open ballot.

The top court will announce its opinion on Monday (tomorrow). As per the cause list, notices were issued to the AGP, chief election commissioner, Senate chairman and the speaker of the National Assembly.

MQM, despite absence from PTI luncheon, says 'unity cannot be sacrificed for 2 Senate seats'

PTI has sprung into action due to the possibility of seat adjustments between PPP and MQM
Political manoeuvring is on the rise for the March 3 Senate elections and after the PPP, PTI has also become active in Karachi.

PTI has sprung into action due to the possibility of seat adjustments between PPP and MQM, due to which ally parties were invited to a luncheon on Sunday in honour of PTI chief organizer Saifullah Niazi.

The luncheon was attended by Grand Democratic Alliance President Sadruddin Shah Rashdi, Hasnain Mirza, Shehryar Mehr, and others from the alliance. However, no member from MQM showed up, it emerged.

MQM has convened an important meeting of the Raabta (Coordination) Committee this evening to consider PPP's proposal for the Senate polls.

The party's leadership has directed all its Members of the Provincial Assembly to reach Karachi. The MPAs will be housed at different places in Karachi for three days and will reach the Assembly together to cast their votes on polling day.

MQM leaders have thus far expressed the view that a vote for Yousuf Raza Gilani would be tantamount to a vote of no confidence against PM Imran Khan and so they are of the opinion that "unity cannot be sacrificed for two Senate seats".

Talking to the media after lunch, PTI leader Maulvi Mahmood said that he had invited the parties for lunch in honour of the candidates standing for Senate election. He said despite an invitation, the MQM delegation could not come due to a busy schedule.

On the other hand, the MQM spokesperson said that the party's members could not attend the PTI luncheon due to a prior organisational engagement.

The spokesperson said that all the parties are engaged in preparations for the upcoming polls with their own respective approaches and that MQM is in constant touch with the PTI and GDA leadership regarding the Senate elections.

Cultural heritage needs to be preserved for future generations: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Pakistan's cultural heritage needed to be preserved for the future generations, Prime Minister Imran Khan said Sunday, as he inaugurated Al-Biruni Radius — a tourism project for revival of the country's heritage — in Jhelum.

PM Imran Khan, who was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Usman Bazdar, Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry, as well as his aide on overseas Pakistanis, Zulfi Bukhari, also inaugurated the Heritage Trail at the 'Al-Biruni' point of Jhelum's Nandana Qila.

Tourism, the premier noted, "provides the most employment" and its promotion would do the same for Pakistan's youth. "Tourism is made successful by the locals," he said, promising to develop the region and put it on the world map.

"Cultural heritage needs to be preserved for future generations," the prime minister underscored. "We will make Jhelum's Baghanwala a model village," he vowed.

Speaking of Al-Biruni — formally known as Abu al-Rehan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni — the premier said the Persian scholar measured the Earth's circumference for the first time at the site.

Known for his travels and writings, Al-Biruni lived from 973 to 1052, becoming the Islamic world's most original polymath.

Bukhari also briefed the prime minister on the developments, saying an observatory would also be set up in the area.

Later, PM Imran Khan visited the Tilla Jogian National Park, where he planted an olive tree, and was briefed on measures related to wildlife and environmental protection in the Salt Range National Park.

According to a statement issued Sunday afternoon by the Prime Minister's Office, the inauguration of the two new national parks was part of "furthering the vision of combatting environmental degradation and protecting biodiversity".

In an earlier update, the PM's Office said on Twitter the prime minister was keen on the preservation and conservation of the site, which was to be converted it into an international tourism site.

The site's archeological significance dates back to the 11th century when Al-Biruni quantified the circumference of the Earth during his stay there. The Persian scholar later wrote a famous book about the region and mentioned Nandana as a great center of learning.

The historical Nandana Fort is located in Jhelum's Pind Dadan Khan tehsil.

Tom Cadmore and Haider Ali played brilliantly as Peshawar Zalmi beat Islamabad United by six wickets 10th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 6.

Haider showed his class in power-hitting once again as he struck three boundaries and as many sixes to lead Zalmi to a convincing third victory in this event.

In the first inning, Wahab Riaz made an impressive comeback after the last match’s performance and led Zalmi to restrict United to 118-10.

While bowling first after winning the toss, Zalmi’s bowlers took charge from the front and took first wickets for just two runs. Wahab removed Paul Stirling off just the fourth ball to put the opponents under pressure.

Alex Hales took the responsibility quite well but wickets tumbling at the other end was a deep concern for him. The right-handed batsman smashed 41 runs off 27 balls with the help of five boundaries and a six.

Hussain Talat resisted a bit but couldn’t continue for long as he managed to score just 22 runs with the help of just two boundaries. Asif Ali made 19 runs.

Wahab, who suffered criticism in the last match after conceding over 50 runs in his four overs, bagged four wickets and conceded just 17 runs in his four overs. Saqib Mahmood took three wickets while Mujeeb-ur-Rehman and Umaid Asif shared a wicket apiece.

Set to chase 119 runs, Zalmi lost openers Imam-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal in quick successions but Cadmore and Shoaib Malik rescued the chasing side and scored 63 runs together to bring Zalmi back in ryhthm.

Haider then steered the show with explosive power-hitting alongside Malik who remained not out for 29 runs spread over a boundary and a six. Haider scored 36 runs laced with three boundaries and as many sixes.

For United, Hasan Ali bagged two wickets while Mohammad Wasim and Fawad Ahmed bagged a wicket each.

Utility Stores across Pakistan have run out of sugar

Utility Stores across Pakistan have run out of sugar
Sugar is in short supply in most Utility Stores across the country, with consumers forced to pay extra for it from the open market, according to the sources

Sources said sugar has disappeared from Utility Stores across the country over the past two days, adding that consumers are forced pay an extra Rs30-35 for it.

Utility Store operators have been told by suppliers that sugar will not be available for the next seven days. Sources also said that the Utility Stores Corporation do not have sugar stock available at the moment due to which six tenders to buy sugar have been issued to meet the demand gap.

However, only 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar were bought on the last tender, said sources. They further confirmed that it may take one or two weeks for local sugar to be available in stores.

The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP), on the other hand, will issue sugar tenders on March 2. Even after a deal is signed to import the commodity, it may take up to two weeks for the sugar to land in Pakistan.

'Government bigwigs and allies benefited from sugar crisis’
Last year, the price of sugar skyrocketed across the country, prompting a strong response from Prime Minister Imran Khan, who launched a "grand operation" against the 'sugar mafia' in the country.

The prime minister had tasked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe the rise in the prices of sugar and make public the report.

The report, released last year, claimed that top PTI members were among those who gained from the previous sugar crisis. An investigation into the crisis had been ordered by Prime Minister Imran Khan in February 2020.

Among the people named in the FIA report were former PTI general secretary Jahangir Tareen and a brother of senior politician and minister Khusro Bakhtiar.

Tareen was said by the report to have benefitted the most from the sugar crisis followed by Bakhtiar's brother.

The report also claimed that the companies belonging to Moonis Elahi — an ally of the party — had profited from the sugar crisis. Elahi is Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi's son and a key member of the PML-Q.

‘Surprise Day’
Operation Swift Retort was a rapid response to the Indian Air Force strike in Balakot obliterating Pakistan’s airspace that had merely harmed a few trees and a wild crow.

February 27, 2019, is a memorable day for Pakistan as Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shattered Indian dream of invincibility and military supremacy by shooting down two Indian aircraft and above all capturing an IAF pilot.

Modi government’s sabre-rattling after a suicide attack on February 14, 2019 in Pulwama district of occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in a dangerous escalation between two nuclear-armed countries in South Asia in February.

Positive step: US, UN hail Pak-India agreement to re-enforce LoC ceasefire

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
The agreement between Pakistan and India to restore peace by strictly observing agreements of ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and other sectors has been hailed by the UN chief and the White House on Thursday.

In separate statements issued after the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both the countries contacted on a hotline and agreed to strict implementation of understandings on the ceasefire, the US and UN welcomed the “positive step”, which will provide an opportunity for further dialogue.

During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the United States welcomes the joint statement between the two nations.

“This is a positive step towards greater peace and stability in South Asia, which is in all shared — is in our shared interest. And we encourage both countries to keep building upon this progress,” she added.

On the other hand, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the development a “positive step” and hoped that it would pave the way for more talks between the two countries.

“The Secretary-General is encouraged by the joint statement issued by the militaries of India and Pakistan on their agreement to observing the ceasefire at the Line of Control in Kashmir and engaging through established mechanisms,” his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement read out at the regular noon briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday.

“He (UN chief) hopes that this positive step will provide an opportunity for further dialogue,” the statement said.

Replying to a question from APP correspondent, the spokesman said the UN chief had no plans as yet to contact the leaders of India and Pakistan for starting the process to resolve the decades-old Kashmir dispute.

He said the secretary-general’s good offices were always available for any member state who would request it.

The President of UN General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, also welcomed the agreement, which, he said, “set an example for others and demonstrates the General Assembly’s value.”

The agreement to re-enforce ceasefire

The director-generals of military operations of India and Pakistan reviewed the situation along the Line of Control and all other sectors in a "free, frank and cordial atmosphere," the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Thursday.

The two DGs of military operations made hotline contact in the interest of achieving "mutually beneficial and sustainable peace", the ISPR statement read.

It said they agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have the propensity to disturb the peace and lead to violence.

Both sides agreed for strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the LOC and all other sectors, with effect from midnight 24/25 February 21.

It was reiterated that existing mechanisms of hotline contact and border flag meetings will be utilised to resolve any unforeseen situation or misunderstanding.

Contact between the two military officials comes at a time when a number of cases of LoC violations by India have been reported by the Pakistan Army.
