George Floyd death: Curfews and clashes in US as protests rage across country

George Floyd death: Curfews and clashes in US as protests rage across country
Protests continued across the United States on Saturday as demonstrators took to the streets over the the death of a black man shown on video gasping for breath as a white police offical knelt on his neck.

Los Angeles, Atlanta and Philadelphia were among several cities to order people to stay indoors after thousands took to streets nationwide to protest the death of George Floyd on Monday.

Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, has become a fresh symbol of police brutality against blacks and sparked civil unrest not seen in the United States for years.

In Los Angeles, officers fired rubber bullets and swung batons during a testy standoff with demonstrators who set fire to a police car. Police and protesters also clashed in Chicago and New York, where several arrests were made.

Trump blamed the extreme left for the violence, including widespread looting and arson in Minneapolis, saying rioters were dishonoring the memory of Floyd.

"We cannot and must not allow a small group of criminals and vandals to wreck our cities and lay waste to our communities," the president said.

"My administration will stop mob violence. And we'll stop it cold," he added, accusing the loose-knit militant anti-fascist network Antifa of orchestrating the violence.

Rioters to be 'decimated'

His late afternoon comments came as crowds began marching through streets in Minneapolis, New York, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and other cities, chanting slogans such as "Black Lives Matter" and "I can't breathe," which Floyd was heard saying repeatedly before he died.

A peaceful protest took place in Toronto as the demonstrations spread beyond America´s border.

LA announced a curfew from 8:00pm (0300 GMT) until 5:30am Sunday while Atlanta's was set for 09:00pm to sunrise. A similar nighttime curfew was implemented in Louisville, Kentucky.

Authorities in Minneapolis braced for a fifth night of protests over what African American leaders called "systemic" mistreatment by law enforcement.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called up more national guard troops Saturday and warned they would "decimate" rioters after Friday night´s violence in the northern state overwhelmed law enforcement.

Cleaning the streets

Walz said he was mobilizing the state´s entire 13,000-strong National Guard to deal with rioters who have looted shops and set fires in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Thousands who defied the first night of curfew overwhelmed the police and troops who had been deployed.

All major freeways leading into Minneapolis were shut down Saturday night with military helicopters taking to the skies over the area as the state braced for more rioting, arsons and looting.

People congregated peacefully on Minneapolis streets Saturday afternoon, chanting Floyd´s name and carrying brooms to help clean up the scores of shops ransacked in the violence of the previous nights.

Some placed flowers in front of the shop where Floyd was arrested on Monday, before his death in the hands of police was recorded in a horrifying cellphone video since seen around the world.

"Our community has stepped up, there are more people cleaning the streets than looting," said Nicole Crust, 41, owner of a beauty salon that was broken into.

Crust echoed officials who said the worst violence was from outsiders, but added a key theme of the protests: "Police brutality must stop."

Walz warned that protestors staying out Saturday past the 8 pm curfew faced "a dangerous situation."

African American and other Minneapolis community leaders pleaded for local residents to stay home Saturday night, as the curfew was expanded to multiple cities in the state.

'Black lives matter'

In New York's Harlem neighborhood, several hundred people gathered for speeches on racism at a midday rally. Later in the afternoon, the crowd grew to thousands and they began marching through the streets.

"We're not turning the cheek anymore. Black lives matter. They will always matter. And we're here today to show that," said makeup artist Melissa Mock, who joined several thousand in a daytime protest in Miami.

Protests were expected to continue throughout the weekend even after the now-fired Minneapolis police officer accused of Floyd's death was arrested and charged with third-degree murder on Friday.

That night, protestors shouted and chanted for hours outside the White House in Washington as Trump sat inside facing the most serious spate of civil unrest of his presidency, in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

With a video showing the officer, Derek Chauvin, pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes until well after the man went motionless, while three other officers assisted, Floyd's family and many protestors demanded more arrests and tougher murder charges.

Govt reduces petroleum prices by Rs7.06 per litre for June

Govt reduces petroleum prices
The government has reduced the price of petrol by Rs7.06 per litre for the month of June, with new price fixed at Rs74.52, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on Sunday.

According to the statement, the price of kerosene has been reduced by Rs11.88 per litre and will now be Rs35.56 per litre. The price of high speed diesel has been increased by five paisas per litre, marking the new price at Rs80.15 per litre.

Additionally, the price of light diesel oil is fixed at Rs38.14 per litre which was previously set at Rs47.51 per litre.

A statement by the Prime Minister's Office said that Pakistan's fuel is now "the cheapest" in South Asia.

"India is almost exactly double. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & Nepal are all 50 to 75 percent more expensive than us," it said.

Yesterday, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had recommended a reduction in petrol price by Rs7.06/litre, kerosene Rs11.88/litre and light diesel oil (LDO) price by Rs9.37/litre for June.

The regulatory body had, however, suggested that the price of diesel should remain unchanged.

For diesel, OGRA had recommended a Rs0.05/litre increase to Rs80.15/litre.

It is worth mentioning that the government is charging 17% general sales tax (GST) on all petroleum products. Apart from it, the government is also collecting petroleum levy (PL) on these products, which is directly taken from consumers.

COVID-19: Zafar Mirza dispels rumours of saturated health facilities in Pakistan

The prime minister's aide on health, Dr Zafar Mirza,
The prime minister's aide on health, Dr Zafar Mirza, on Sunday dispelled rumours of saturated health facilities in terms of unavailability of beds, ventilators, and other resources, saying that only 28% of ventilators have so far been engaged by COVID-19 patients across the country .

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, the federal minister did lament, however, that with 88 fatalities, the country has reported the highest death toll in the last 24 hours.

He said with 201 patients on ventilators, the number is also the highest figure of patients on ventilators since the emergence of COVID-19 in the country.

"About 723 patients are in critical condition and 201 of them are on ventilators, which is the maximum number of people on ventilators," said Dr Mirza.

In a bid to monitor the health facilities in the country and to eliminate confusion regarding hospital bed availability, the health ministry has launched a Resource Management System (RMS) to collect and provide real-time information about coronavirus patients across Pakistan.

Providing details of the system, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Information Technology Board, Shabahat Ali said that all the hospitals across Pakistan have been linked with this system.

"Hospitals can individually provide real time data for a unified and consolidated picture of the resources available to treat COVID-19 patients," he explained

Ali went on to add that social welfare organisations like Edhi Foundation and Rescue 1122 will also be given access to the system so that they can get updated information about availability of beds, ventilators, and Personal Protection Equipment for people suffering from COVID-19.

"Over 1,500 hospitals across the country have been linked with this system, providing real time information about availability of beds, ventilators, and other facilities for coronavirus patients," he said.

With a radius set on the map, Ali said that "real time data" on hospital beds, ventilators and other resources available for the immediate treatment of patients will be accessible.

He said that for ease of use, a National Emergency Response app has been developed. "The app will point you to the nearest ventilator or hospital bed available for patients," he said, adding that the facility was set up after extensive research of two months.

Pakistan slams India’s expulsion of PHC staffers as ‘persistent anti-Pakistan propaganda’

Aisha Farooqi
Pakistan on Sunday condemned the Indian government’s decision to expel two staff members of the Pakistan High Commission (PHC) in New Delhi as part of a “persistent anti-Pakistan propaganda”.

According to a Foreign Office statement, India’s decision to declare two officials of the High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi “persona non grata requiring them to leave India within 24 hours” was accompanied by a “negative pre-planned and orchestrated media campaign, which is a part of persistent anti-Pakistan propaganda”.

It added that two staff members of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi were “lifted by the Indian authorities today (31 May 2020) on false and unsubstantiated charges”. They were subsequently released after the the Pakistan High Commission intervened.

“We condemn the detention and torture as well as threatening and pressuring of the diplomatic officials to accept false charges,” the Foreign Office said.

The tersely worded statement came in response to an Indian Ministry of External Affairs press release which claimed the pair was being expelled for “indulging in espionage activities”.

The Foreign Office added: “Pakistan strongly rejects the baseless Indian allegations and deplores the Indian action which is in clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations as well as the norms of diplomatic conduct especially in an already vitiated atmosphere.

“The High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi has always worked within the parameters of international law and diplomatic norms. The Indian action is clearly aimed at shrinking diplomatic space for the working of Pakistan High Commission.”

The Foreign Office stressed that Indian attempts to escalate tensions “will not succeed in diverting attention either from the ongoing internal and external issues faced by the BJP government or from the worsening situation and gross human rights violations being perpetrated by the Indian occupation forces in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K)”.

Pakistan urged the international community to take notice of the Indian “designs and play its role in ensuring peace and security in South Asia”.

Nawaz Sharif comes out of isolation

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been spotted enjoying tea with family members outside his son’s office near Hyde Park after over two months of isolation following the COVID-19 lockdown.

The photo, seen circulating on social media, shows the PML-N supremo having tea with his grandchildren in the garden of Hasan Nawaz Sharif’s Hyde Park Place office.

This is the first time that the PML-N leader has left his apartment to go out in public after the coronavirus outbreak hit London, a source in the Sharif family said.

According to the source, Sharif took a walk from Park Lane flats to the office — ten minutes away.

As soon as the photo circulated on the media, a war of words broke out between PML-N leaders and PTI ministers and advisors.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif broke her silence after a long time and responded to critics.

The PML-N Vice President and daughter of the elder Sharif said that her father’s picture on social media was not meant for publicity but aimed at humiliating him and like every time the plan failed."

Maryam said that those who could "force their way into the ICU" and try to take pictures of her unconscious mother, they can take pictures of ladies and children of Nawaz Sharif’s family. “If it was such a good deed, then why did you hide like a coward?” she asked the anonymous person who first took the picture.

Sharif’s family sources have said that doctors had advised the family to keep him in isolation in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak due to his advanced age.

Earlier in January, a storm started in Pakistani politics after a picture of the former premier came out in which he was seen having dinner at an Arab restaurant.

The then SAPM on information and broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan had announced that British govt will be asked to send Sharif back through a letter but nothing happened after that.

Sugar inquiry report is a charge sheet against Shahid Khaqan Abbasi: Shahzad

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar on Saturday said the sugar inquiry report is a charge sheet against former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore today, SAPM Akbar said that Prime Minster Imran Khan gave permission for the export of the commodity not for the subsidy.

"There was ample sugar stock in the country when the export was allowed," Akbar said and added the price was high in the international market at that time.

He said that the sugar inquiry report was made public as soon as it was received from the commission.

“I will prove whatever Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said was a white lie and they [opposition leaders] are misleading the nation about the report, which is a landmark development.”

Abbasi, earlier in the day, had accused the government of supporting sugar barons and said: "[PM] Imran, [former finance minister] Asad Umar, and [Chief Minister Punjab] Usman Buzdar are the real culprits behind the sugar scam."

"The PTI government seems to be getting swept away with this sugar issue," he had remarked.

Reacting to Abbasi’s criticism, Akbar stated that for the first time ministers had appeared before an inquiry commission and testified.

Turning his guns towards the former prime minister, the premier's aide said that the inquiry report has "exposed Abbasi" who doled out Rs20 billion subsidy to the sugar mills owners on a 24-hour notice due to Salman Shahbaz.

"Abbasi failed to provide any document or give a satisfactory reply to the panel's questions."

PM's aide on accountability said that 50% of the sugar cane procured during the year 2017-19 was not declared nor the sugar produced from it was shown in the papers.

"Business was done on kachi parchi in Al Arabia Mills [owned by Shahbaz Sharif's sons]," he said.

Akbar also called for a financial audit of other cartels "sucking people's blood" in the country.

"The forensic report has discussed all the mills," he said.

"Farmers and consumers are in bad condition while the mills' owners are flourishing."

Akbar said that the government will introduce a mechanism under which the sugar price will be brought down.

Wearing facial masks in public places is mandatory now: Mirza

Special Assistant to PM on Health Dr Zafar Mirza
Special Assistant to PM on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said on Saturday that wearing masks in public places has been declared mandatory now as the coronavirus cases are mounting day by day.

The SAPM was addressing a press conference, where he said that surgical and cloth masks can be used while travelling in trains, public transport or going to mosques, bazaars, and shops.

Mirza said that in the past 24 hours, 78 deaths occurred while four health workers also died of the virus.

“So far we have conducted 532,000 tests,” said the SAPM, continuing that in the past day 12,020 tests were done, out of which 2,429 came positive.

He added that the local transmission ratio of the virus has reached 92%, while the percentage of recovery cases is 36%.

The minister cautioned that there is a dire need to follow the SOPs and guidelines to curb the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, he urged people not to spread wrong information on social media, particularly regarding hospitals.

“Our healthcare assets have not been engaged more than 25%,” he said.

SAPM on National Security Dr Moeed Yusuf said that so far around 33,000 Pakistanis have been repatriated from 55 countries via repatriation flights.

The SAPM said that the focus is more on United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia due to the presence of Pakistani workers in these countries.

He said that 20,000 stranded nationals will be repatriated from June 1 to 10, adding that a new policy for overseas Pakistanis will be introduced soon.

Hong Kong officials say Trump 'completely wrong' to end city's special status

Hong Kong officials say Trump 'completely wrong' to end city's special status
Hong Kong officials lashed out on Saturday at moves by U.S. President Donald Trump to strip the city of its special status in a bid to punish China for imposing national security laws on the global financial hub.

Speaking hours after Trump said the city no longer warranted economic privileges and that some officials could face sanctions, security minister John Lee told reporters that Hong Kong could not be threatened and would push ahead with the new laws.

“I don’t think they will succeed in using any means to threaten the (Hong Kong) government, because we believe what we are doing is right,” Lee said.

Justice minister Teresa Cheng said the basis for Trump’s actions was “completely false and wrong”, saying national security laws were legal and necessary for the former British colony.

In some of his toughest rhetoric yet, Trump said Beijing had broken its word over Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy from Beijing, by proposing the national security legislation and that the territory no longer warranted U.S. economic privileges.

“We will take action to revoke Hong Kong’s preferential treatment as a separate customs and travel territory from the rest of China,” Trump said, adding that Washington would also impose sanctions on individuals seen as responsible for “smothering - absolutely smothering - Hong Kong’s freedom”.

Trump told reporters at the White House that China’s move was a tragedy for the world, but he gave no timetable for the moves, leaving Hong Kong residents, businesses and officials to ponder just how far his administration will go.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong said Saturday marked “a sad day” for China’s freest city.

“This is an emotional moment for Americans in Hong Kong and it will take companies and families a while to digest the ramifications,” AmCham President Tara Joseph said in a statement.

“Many of us ... have deep ties to this city and with Hong Kong people. We love Hong Kong and it’s a sad day,” she said, adding the chamber would continue to work with its members to maintain Hong Kong’s status as a vital business centre.

Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997 under a “one country, two systems” formula, with the guarantee of many freedoms, including the right to protest and an independent judiciary, not enjoyed on the mainland.

Chris Patten, the last British governor, said Chinese President Xi Jinping was so nervous about the position of the ruling Communist Party that he was risking a new Cold War with his “thuggish” crackdown in Hong Kong.

China’s parliament this week approved a decision to create laws for Hong Kong to curb sedition, secession, terrorism and foreign interference. Mainland security and intelligence agents may be stationed in the city for the first time.

Authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong insist the legislation will target only a small number of “troublemakers” who threaten China’s national security. They say such action is urgently needed after months of sometimes violent anti-government, anti-China protests rocked the city last year.

Protests are simmering again as Hong Kong emerges from its coronavirus shutdown. Demonstrators are expected to take to the streets on Sunday.

Trump did not name any sanctions targets but said the announcement would “affect the full range of agreements we have with Hong Kong”, including the U.S.-Hong Kong extradition treaty to export controls on dual-use technologies and more “with few exceptions”.

An editorial in the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s Communist Party, said some external forces with ulterior motives have been issuing so-called “Hong Kong-related statements” for a while, threatening to “strongly respond”, and lobbying for “immediate attention”.

Such attempts to interfere in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs would not scare the Chinese people and were doomed not to succeed, it said, without explicitly naming the United States.

'Business is restarting': German executives fly back to China

'Business is restarting': German executives fly back to China
Scores of German business executives were due to return to China on Friday evening, beneficiaries of an accelerated entry procedure offered by Beijing as both countries seek to reignite their economies after months of lockdown.

Under a deal brokered by the German Chamber of Commerce in China, staff from hundreds of German companies with units there can return without undergoing two weeks’ quarantine if they can show a certified negative coronavirus test.

Among the executives waiting to board the chartered Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) flight to Tianjin was Karin Warowski, a controller at carmaker Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), who was eager to rejoin her husband after months of separation.

“Obviously everyone’s pleased that business is restarting - it’s already underway,” she said, rushing through a near-deserted airport to catch her flight.

“I’m one of the first privileged few who can go back to Tianjin... I’m very pleased to be going back to where my husband is. We’ve been apart for four months.”

About 500 to 1,000 business managers have been offered an accelerated re-entry procedure by the Chinese government, a German business representative told Reuters on Tuesday, with family members bringing the total to around 2,500 people.

Even as much of the rest of the world economy has shut down to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus, which originated in China, factories there have been ramping up production again since the outbreak abated.

China is Germany’s most important trading partner by far, with around 206 billion euros ($229 bln) worth of goods traded in 2019.

Florida officials approve Walt Disney World reopening plans

Florida officials approve Walt Disney World reopening plans
Florida officials have approved plans for a phased reopening of Walt Disney World (DIS.N) in Orlando starting on July 11, according to a memo from a state agency released on Friday.

The successful reopening of its parks is a signal event for Disney and the rest of the world as governments and companies strategize how to move out of lockdown while the novel coranavirus is still a threat.

The state also cleared Sea World Entertainment Inc (SEAS.N) to reopen on June 10, said Halsey Beshears, secretary of Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation, in a memo sent to officials in Orange County, Florida.

When the Disney parks reopen, guests and employees will be required to wear masks and undergo temperature checks. The resort will suspend parades, fireworks displays and other activities that create crowds.

Disney will encourage contactless payment systems and expand its existing mobile order systems in restaurants, it said on Wednesday. It plans to restrict the number of guests, who will be required to reserve their park passes ahead of time.

Starting in January, the media and entertainment giant closed theme parks around the world to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The company had estimated it lost $1 billion at its theme parks division from January through March.

On Wednesday, Disney Chief Executive Officer Robert Chapek told CNBC the company currently has about 20,000 people per day visiting Shanghai Disneyland, which reopened on May 11 with mandatory masks, temperature screenings and social distancing for visitors and employees.

Disney is soon expected to reveal plans for reopening its Anaheim, California, Disneyland amusement park, the company’s original themed attraction.

Competitive sports in England gets green light for Monday restart

After a near three-month shutdown, elite competitive sports in England can resume from Monday behind closed doors provided strict conditions are met, the government said on Saturday.

The first major live event is expected to be the 2000 Guineas Stakes horse race at Newmarket on June 6, although racing is set to start at Kempton Park on Tuesday.

Competitive sports was suspended in Britain in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 38,000 people in the UK to date.

Guidelines published on Saturday by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), outlined a lengthy list of criteria that must be met to allow elite athletes and professional sportsmen to resume competition.

“The wait is over. Live British sport will shortly be back on in safe and carefully controlled environments,” Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said in a statement.

“This guidance provides the safe framework for sports to resume competitions behind closed doors. It is now up to individual sports to confirm they can meet these protocols and decide when it’s right for them to restart.”

Dowden confirmed that preparations were being finalised for the Premier League and English Football League to return to action in June. Premier League shareholders this week agreed a return to contact training with a provisional restart date of June 17, provided safety requirements are in place.

“The Premier League welcomes the government’s announcement today,” an EPL statement said. “We have provisionally planned to restart the Premier League on June 17, but there is still much work to be done to ensure the safety of all involved.”

DCMS said a “significant proportion” of the remaining 92 Premier League matches will be shown on free-to-air platforms.

“The British sports bounceback has begun,” it said on Twitter.

While the Premier League could resume on June 17, other sports are in different positions. Domestic cricket remains suspended until Aug. 1, while the Wimbledon tennis tournament has been cancelled for the first time since World War II. Premiership rugby clubs hope to resume training from June 8.

The government’s latest step for the resumption of elite level sports follow its ‘stage two’ guidance published on May 25 which allowed elite athletes to resume group training under carefully controlled conditions.

“This is a significant moment for British sport. By working with clinicians every step of the way, we’re creating the safest possible environments for everyone involved,” Dowden said.

Measures, agreed in conjunction with Public Health England and medical representatives from sports bodies, include players travelling alone to venues, being screened for coronavirus symptoms before entering, and maintaining social distancing where possible, including celebrations.

Dressing room usage will be minimised and only essential physiotherapy allowed while recovery sessions will be held outside. High-contact areas must be regularly disinfected, while catering must be limited.

The government also announced on Saturday that people in England will be able to exercise outside with up to five others from different households from Monday. The announcement did not apply to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Drugs standards group nixes plan to kick pharma's crab blood habit

Drugs standards group nixes plan to kick pharma's crab blood habit
Horseshoe crabs’ icy-blue blood is set to remain the drug industry’s standard for safety tests after a powerful U.S. group ditched a plan to put on an equal footing a synthetic substitute pushed by Swiss biotech Lonza and animal welfare groups.

The crabs’ copper-rich blood clots in the presence of bacterial endotoxins and has long been used in tests to detect contamination in shots and infusions.

More recently, man-made versions called recombinant Factor C (rFC) from Basel-based Lonza and others have emerged.

An industry battle has been brewing, as another testing giant, Lonza’s U.S.-based rival Charles River Laboratories,, has criticized the synthetic option on safety grounds.

Maryland-based U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), whose influential publications guide the drug industry, had initially proposed adding rFC to a chapter governing international endotoxin testing standards.

USP is now ditching that, it announced late Friday, citing comments it had received from unidentified stakeholders.

The decision means the drug industry will have fewer incentives to end its reliance on animal-based tests, even as companies like Lonza, Eli Lilly and France’s bioMerieux promote man-made alternatives and wildlife advocates worry about crab bleeding’s effect on the coastal ecosystem.

“The Expert Committee decided to cancel the proposal,” USP said, adding it will instead create a new, stand-alone rFC chapter come May 2022. It did not immediately give specific reasons for why it canceled the original plan.

The group’s shift means drug companies seeking to use synthetic products must still do extra, costly validation work to guarantee they match the safety of the crab blood. Despite the move, USP did say it still supports efforts to shift to rFC tests, including for potential COVID-19 tests where it is offering technical assistance.

Eli Lilly, one drugmaker that has shifted to synthetic tests, has said rFC is safe and that the extra validation requirements have been a hurdle to more companies adopting it.

Endotoxin tests number 70 million annually and estimates put the relevant market at $1 billion annually by 2024.

Conservationists, including advocates for migratory birds that dine on horseshoe crab eggs on the U.S. East Coast, have also been pushing for rFC recognition to take pressure off crabs, some of which still die after being released into the Atlantic Ocean following bleeding.

Lonza did not immediately comment on USP’s move.

Charles River also did not return a request for comment.

The New Jersey Audubon Society and Delaware-based Ecological Research & Development Group, a crab conservation group, did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Europe’s drug standards group EDQM in Strasbourg, France, also did not immediately return Reuters messages seeking comment on how the USP move would impact its own separate plans to recognize rFC as on par with crab blood tests.

Google postpones Android 11 unveiling amid U.S. protests

Google
Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google on Saturday said it has postponed next week’s planned unveiling of the beta version of its latest Android 11 mobile operating system in light of protests and unrest in the United States.

“We are excited to tell you more about Android 11, but now is not the time to celebrate,” Google said in a message posted on its Android developers website.

The event was originally scheduled to take place virtually on Wednesday, according to the website. In a tweet, it said that it will announce more details on the new version of Android “soon,” without specifying any dates.

Protests have spread across the United States over the killing of George Floyd, a Minneapolis black man who died after being pinned by the neck under a white police officer’s knee.

George Floyd case: US police officer Derek Chauvin charged with murder
US police officer Derek Chauvin, who pinned an unarmed black man with his knee to the throat before the latter died, was on Friday arrested and charged with murder in the latest development in the George Floyd case.

The prosecutor's announcement of Chauvin — the Minneapolis police officer who killed Floyd — being charged came after three nights of violent protests in the Midwestern city sparked by the death.

Chauvin was is seen on a bystander’s cellphone video kneeling on George Floyd’s neck on Monday before he died was charged with third-degree murder, Mike Freeman, Hennepin County attorney, told a news briefing.

"He is in custody and has been charged with murder,” Freeman said of Chauvin, who is white. “We have evidence, we have the citizen’s video, the horrible, horrific, terrible thing we’ve seen over and over again.”

Freeman said a detailed complaint would be made available later on Friday.

The cellphone footage showed Floyd repeatedly moaning and gasping while he pleaded to Chauvin, kneeling on his neck, "Please, I can’t breathe.” After several minutes, Floyd gradually grows quiet and ceases to move.

No plans to return to Test cricket: Wahab

Pakistan’s pacer Wahab Riaz
Pakistan’s pacer Wahab Riaz said that he doesn’t have any plans yet to return to the elite form of the game ‘Test Cricket’.

“Currently, I am not planning to make a comeback in Test cricket. But, yes as soon as I make myself ready to play Test cricket, I will inform the board about my availability,” he said.

The fast bowler reiterated that he didn’t skip Test cricket to earn money through professional cricket leagues. “See, I wasn’t a part of the Test team since 2017 so there is no point that I was behind money or anything else. I wanted to have a little rest from Test cricket and focus on white-ball format,” he maintained.

Riaz wasn’t disappointed at all after losing renewed Central Contract. “My main priority is to represent my country. For me, playing for country is bigger than getting a central contract,” he concluded.

It must be noted here that Riaz took rest from Test cricket for an indefinite period last year. He wanted to make himself available for more white-ball cricket in the longer term. Along with Mohammad Amir, he lost the renewed central contract.

SpaceX, NASA call off crew launch due to bad weather

SpaceX, NASA call off crew launch due to bad weather
The historic launch of SpaceX's crew to the International Space Station in nearly a decade was called off on Wednesday due to fears of a lightning strike.

With NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley strapped into the Crew Dragon capsule, the launch pad platform retracted and rocket fueling underway, SpaceX made the call to abort.

"Unfortunately, we are not going to launch today," launch director Mike Taylor said, with about 17 minutes to go until takeoff.

"We had just simply too much electricity in the atmosphere," NASA chief Jim Bridenstine said later.

"There wasn´t really a lightning storm or anything like that, but there was a concern that if we did launch it could actually trigger lightning," he added.

This was the case for the Apollo 12 mission, which was struck twice shortly after launch — losing the use of some non-essential instruments but completing its mission nonetheless.

A rocket and its plume ascending through clouds act as conductors and can trigger lightning at lower levels of atmospheric electricity than what is required for natural lighting.

The delay means a wait of at least a few more days for the first crewed launch on an American rocket since the space shuttle program ended in 2011. They will try again on Saturday.

If successful, the launch will be the first time the feat has been performed by a privately owned company.

A live video feed showed Behnken and Hurley — in their futuristic white uniforms adorned with the US flag and the logos of NASA and SpaceX — waiting as propellant was unloaded from the reusable Falcon 9 rocket after the launch was postponed.

The emergency ejection system remained armed until the fuel tanks were emptied, in case of an accidental explosion.

The launch had been scheduled for 4:33pm (2033 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center´s Launch Pad 39A. Neil Armstrong and his Apollo 11 crewmates lifted off from the same spot on their historic journey to the Moon.

The mission comes despite shutdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic, with the crew in quarantine for the past two weeks.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump had arrived in Florida to watch, but headed back to the White House once the launch was called off.

SpaceX win over Boeing

Founded in 2002, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. has torn up the rules to produce a lower-cost alternative to human spaceflight that has gradually won over skeptics.

By 2012, it had become the first private company to dock a cargo capsule at the ISS, resupplying the station regularly ever since.

Two years later, NASA ordered the next step: to transport its astronauts there by adapting the Dragon capsule.

"SpaceX would not be here without NASA," founder Elon Musk said last year, after a successful dress rehearsal without humans for the trip to the ISS.

The US space agency paid more than $3 billion for SpaceX to design, build, test and operate its reusable capsule for six future space round trips.

The project has experienced delays, explosions, and parachute problems — but even so, SpaceX has beaten aerospace giant Boeing to the punch.

Boeing's NASA entry, the Starliner, is still not ready.

The move by NASA to invest in privately developed spacecraft — a more budget-friendly proposition than spending tens of billions of dollars developing such systems itself, as it had done for decades — was begun under the presidency of George W. Bush for cargo, and then under Barack Obama for human flight.

At the time, there was immense hostility in Congress and NASA to the start-up´s claims of what it could achieve.

Ending dependence on Russia

A decade on, it was Trump who was present for the launch.

The Republican is trying to reaffirm American domination of space, militarily but also by ordering a return to the Moon in 2024.

NASA hopes to entrust "low Earth orbit" space travel to the private sector in order to free up dollars for its more distant missions.

Crew Dragon is a capsule like Apollo, but updated for the 21st century. Touch screens have replaced switches. The interior has more subtle lighting.

It looks entirely different from the huge winged space shuttles that carried astronauts into space from US soil from 1981 to 2011.

"We're expecting a smooth ride but we're expecting a loud ride," said Behnken, who, like Hurley, flew in the shuttles twice.

When the mission eventually goes ahead, Crew Dragon will catch up with the space station, and will probably remain docked there until August.

If it fulfills its mission and is certified safe, it will mean the Americans will no longer depend on Russian Soyuz rockets for access to space rides.

Second Indian spy drone shot down along LoC within three days: ISPR

Second Indian spy drone shot down along LoC
Pakistan Army troops shot down an Indian spy drone after it intruded into Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from across the restive Line of Control (LoC), the military’s media wing said on Friday, in the second such incident to have occurred within three days.

"Pakistan Army troops shot down an Indian spying #quadcopter which came from Kanzalwan Sector, intruded 700 metres on Pakistan side of #LoC in Nekrun Sector," the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a tweet.

On Wednesday, Pakistani troops had shot down an Indian quadcopter in Rakhchikri sector after it had intruded 650 metres on Pakistan’s side of the LoC.

In a similar incident last month, another Indian quadcopter was shot down by Pakistani troops after it violated Pakistan's airspace in Sankh district.

According to military sources, Indian military uses quadcopters for aerial photography of Pakistani posts along the LoC as part of its intelligence-gathering operations and target selection before carrying out cross-LoC shelling.

Last year, several Indian reconnaissance drones were shot down by Pakistani troops in different areas along the LoC including three in Rakhchikri sector alone in a short span of time between March and May.

The heavily militarised LoC that splits the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir between India and Pakistan frequently witnesses skirmishes and artillery duels, causing mostly civilian losses, in a serious breach of the Ceasefire Agreement that the two armies had signed in November 2003.

On the other hand, tensions between China and India have also escalated along their de facto border in Ladakh, which New Delhi made a ‘union territory’ after separating it from Indian-occupied Kashmir under its controversial August 5, 2019, move.

Former Malaysian PM Mahathir expelled from own political party

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad expelled from own political party for not supporting the country’s government.

Mahathir, who was chairman of the United Indigenous Party of Malaysia, is fired for not supporting the country’s government.

Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been sacked by the political party he co-founded after sitting on opposition benches during a May 18 parliamentary session.

A statement on Thursday from the United Indigenous Party of Malaysia, known by its Malay acronym Bersatu, said Mahathir’s membership had been “revoked with immediate effect”.

Mahathir, who was party chairman, was fired for not supporting Malaysia’s government, which is headed by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, the Bersatu president.

In a letter circulated widely on social media, the party stated that Mahathir automatically ceased to be a member after he made a show of rejecting Muhyiddin’s leadership as prime minister and party president by sitting with the opposition when parliament met last week.

An aide to Muhyiddin confirmed the letters were authentic.

Mahathir‘s office declined an immediate response to a request for comment as it had not yet seen the letter itself, an aide said.

Muhyiddin’s move is being widely seen as an attempt to consolidate power as he faces a possible challenge to his nascent premiership.

Mahathir, now nearly 95, was the world’s oldest government leader until he unexpectedly quit in February, sparking a frantic weeklong power struggle.

The crisis ended with Muhyiddin, who founded Bersatu with Mahathir before joining a four-party alliance that won the 2018 elections, being nominated as the prime minister.

Muhyiddin heads a new coalition backed by the United Malays National Organisation, the party once led by Najib Razak, who is on trial over corruption charges dating to his tenure as prime minister up to 2018.

Mahathir, who decided shortly after resigning that he wanted to be prime minister again, bitterly opposed the new government and denounced his former ally as a traitor.

Mahathir sought a confidence vote in Muhyiddin on May 18 but the parliamentary sitting was restricted to an address by King Abdullah, prompting a furious Mahathir to claim “democracy is dead” in Malaysia.

Four other legislators were removed from Bersatu along with Mahathir, including his son, Mukhriz, who earlier this month was deposed as head of the regional administration in Kedah, a state in northern Malaysia, by the same alliance-shifting that handed Muhyiddin the top job.

Toshakhana case: Court issues arrest warrants for Nawaz Sharif

An accountability court on Friday issued arrest warrants for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Toshakhana reference.

The hearing was presided over by AC Judge Asghar Ali, in which former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appeared before the court, while former president Asif Ali Zardari and ex prime minister Nawaz Sharif skipped the appearance.

At the outset of the hearing, the counsel of Asif Ali Zardari presented the medical reports of his client and requested to grant exemption from court appearance.

The plea was opposed by NAB’s Deputy Prosecutor General Sardar Muzaffar, but the court approved the plea and directed former president Asif Ali Zardari to appear on June 11 in the reference.

During the proceedings, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor has requested the court to issue arrest warrants against Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, Yousaf Raza Gillani and Omni Group Director Abdul Ghani Majeed.

But the court turned down the anti-graft watchdog body’s request and only ordered to issue arrest warrants for the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Later, the hearing of the case was adjourned till June 11.

Toshakhana reference

The NAB had filed a reference with the accountability court against the former heads of the state for not depositing luxury vehicles and valuable gifts received from the foreign leaders in the treasury.

NAB sources said that former president Asif Ali Zardari had only paid 15 per cent of the total cost of the vehicles received as gifts through fake accounts.

Zardari had received expensive cars as a gift from Libya and the UAE as president but did not deposit it in the Tosha Khana, the sources added.

Nawaz Sharif and Yousaf Raza Gillani had also received cars as a gift from different foreign leaders as prime ministers and used it themselves instead of depositing them in the treasury.

Owners of Omni Group, Khawaja Anwar Majeed and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Majeed were also nominated as accused in the reference.
