Brexit at last: Britain Leaves EU after 47 years of membership

Britain Leaves EU
United Kingdom has officially left the European Union after 47 years of membership and more than three years after it voted to do so in a referendum.

There were celebrations and tears across the country as the EU´s often reluctant member became the first to leave an organisation set up to forge unity among nations after the horrors of World War II.

Thousands of people waving Union Jack flags packed London´s Parliament Square to mark the moment of Brexit at 11 pm (2300 GMT) midnight in Brussels.

The Union flag will be removed from all EU institutions (one of which will be placed in a museum in Brussels) and senior EU politicians will probably make statements expressing that this is a sad day for Europe and that they want to remain the closest of friends with Europe.

UK officials say 2 people test positive for novel coronavirus

UK officials say 2 people test positive for novel coronavirus
British health officials said on Friday two people had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, in the country's first confirmed cases since the deadly outbreak emerged in China and began to spread globally this month.

"We can confirm that two patients in England, who are members of the same family, have tested positive for coronavirus," Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, said in a statement.

"The patients are receiving specialist NHS care, and we are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus," he added, referring to the National Health Service (NHS).

Whitty said the state-funded NHS was "extremely well-prepared" and officials were "working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread".

“We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately,” he added.

The SARS-like virus epidemic which originated in the central Chinese city Wuhan has so far killed 213 people and spread to at least 18 countries around the world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday declared it an international public health emergency.

Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, has been subject to an unprecedented lockdown, preventing residents from leaving in a bid to stop the deadly virus from spreading further.

Thousands of foreigners were among millions of people confined in the metropolis, and numerous countries have begun airlifting their citizens out.

A plane chartered by Britain to evacuate its citizens and other foreign nationals on Friday departed the city with 110 people aboard — 83 Britons and 27 foreigners.

It will land at an air force base in central England at around 1:00pm (local time), with returning Britons to be isolated for 14 days at a medical facility in the northwest of England.

It is understood the newly-confirmed cases of the virus in Britain are not located in that region.

UK health officials declined to reveal where they had occurred citing patient confidentiality.

Opposition slams govt for not evacuating Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan

Opposition slams govt for not evacuating Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan
Opposition parties slammed the government on Friday for not repatriating Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan and at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

The criticism from opposition lawmakers came during a session of the Senate where the outbreak of the disease in Wuhan and the measures that the government had taken were discussed.

Leader of the House Senator Shibli Faraz said the government had deposited $840 into the bank accounts of Pakistani students. He said the Chinese government was taking care of Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan.

Senator Mushahidullah of the PML-N criticised the government for not doing anything to evacuate Pakistani students from China. He said that the mothers of those students in Pakistan were "upset and crying" out of worry for their children. He said that important issues were being ignored by authorities.

"Pakistan has the largest embassy in China," he said. "People there [in the embassy] don't seem active."

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Siraj ul Haq urged authorities to keep contact with parents of the Pakistani students stranded in China. He said that it was unfortunate that the students were running out of money.

PPP leader and former interior minister Rehman Malik said the government should send a special plane to bring back Pakistanis from Wuhan. He said if there was risk of the disease spreading in Pakistan then a proper screening process should be conducted so that the virus is contained.

Earlier, the government said it would not evacuate Pakistani students stranded in Wuhan as it was not advisable to do so. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said during a press conference that government will not become a part in spreading the virus.

He said the government stands with its Chinese counterpart and would respect the directions of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Beijing.

"We don't want to take any emotional decision which will cause this virus to spread further," he said. "It is also our responsibility to ensure that our citizens in Wuhan are being properly taken care of and see to it whether they are being provided food or items of daily use or not," he added.

The Pakistan U-19 batsmen easily chased down a target of 189 runs in the 41st over, with 53 balls still remaining.

A half-century on debut from 17-year-old opener from Sialkot, Mohammad Huraira, was instrumental in the victory, as he top-scored with 64 runs off 76 balls, while his fellow opener Haider Ali scoring 28 runs off 34 deliveries.

Mohammad Haris remained not-out on 29 off 43 balls, taking the side over the finishing line.

Afghanistan's Noor Ahmad was the only bowler who managed to take any wickets, finishing with 2 for 32.

Earlier, Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir Khan took 3 wickets for 58 while leg-spinner Fahad Munir took 2 for 29 to dismiss the Afghan batting line-up in 49 overs.

Qasim Akram, Abbas Afridi, Tahir Hussain and Aamir Ali took a wicket each.

Afghanistan captain Farhan Zakhil scored 40 runs with the bat, while Abdul Rahman scored 30, helping the side set a 189-run target.

But the Pakistani batsmen were able to easily chase down the target with 53 balls and six wickets to spare.

Huraira was named man-of-the-match for his match-winning knock.

Following the quarter-final victory, Pakistan will now face India in the first Super League semi-final at Potchefstroom on February 4.

Erdogan hits out at some Arab countries' 'treason' over Trump plan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday blasted some Arab countries for backing a Middle East plan unveiled by the United States, condemning it as "treason".

"Some Arab countries that support such a plan commit treason against Jerusalem, as well as against their own people, and more importantly against all humanity," Erdogan told his party's lawmakers in the parliament.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled long-awaited details of a US plan for solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, warning it may represent the last chance at statehood for the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the peace plan the "slap of the century".

Turkey, a strong advocate of the Palestinian cause, had condemned the plan.

"The United States' so-called peace plan is stillborn," Turkey's foreign ministry had said in a statement.

"This is an annexation plan aimed at killing a two-state solution and extorting the Palestinian territory."

Erdogan today added that Turkey may launch a military operation into Syria's northwestern province of Idlib if the situation in the region is not resolved immediately, as attacks by Russia-backed Syrian government forces raised concern of a new refugee wave to Turkey.

Speaking in Ankara, Erdogan said Turkey could not handle a fresh influx of migrants. On Wednesday, Erdogan had said Ankara was losing patience with the assault and accused Russia of violating agreements aimed at curbing conflict in the region.

Ehsaas Kafaalat: PM Imran launches welfare programme aimed at uplifting underprivileged women

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that Pakistan never saw the scale of progress it should have seen because the underprivileged "were left behind" to serve an elitist agenda.

"Neither did we provide them quality education, nor build good hospitals for them. We didn't care for their health or ensure the provision of food.

"No country that has only served its elite ever progressed," said the premier, while addressing the launch ceremony of the Ehsaas Kafaalat Programme for poor women, in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, under the programme, a stipend of Rs2,000 per month will be paid "to the most deserving and poorest women across the country through a digital payment system based on transparent mechanism".

The premier, while addressing the event, promised that the state will take responsibility of the underprivileged.

"Seven million women will receive the Kafaalat card which means seven million households will benefit," said the premier, adding that health cards had already been distributed to six million families, enabling each to seek treatment worth Rs720,000.

"So far, I believe, our government's greatest achievement is this," said the prime minister.

"The helplessness that people feel when they don't have the funds for their treatment, is the greatest cruelty in society," he continued.

"When illness befalls a member of an underprivileged family, the entire household is thrust below the line of poverty as their entire budget is spent trying to seek treatment," noted the premier.

During the event, the prime minister distributed cards to several women and expressed satisfaction with the way the programme's system had been developed so truly deserving women could benefit.

"Humanity demands that you help those less privileged than you," said the premier, adding: "However, when there is dishonesty in the use of the funds collected, then such programmes are never successful," said the premier.

"So for its success, it was important for such systems to develop which ensure that the money reaches those people who are truly deserving, who are barely able to feed their children," said the premier. He explained that the programme had experienced delays because of the focus on developing a transparent mechanism for the flow of funds.

The prime minister said that it was under this mechanism, 800,000 people had been weeded out which included government officers who had cars and were availing foreign tours.

"These women, to whom I just distributed the cards, are among the people whose money was being stolen," he said.

The premier then proceeded with giving out details of how the programme works and provided an outline of other schemes the government will soon be implementing.

Under the Kafaalat Programme, he said that women will all be facilitated with bank accounts "so the money isn't stolen". He said that the card can be used to buy groceries from utility stores as well.

The premier said that smartphones will also be distributed so the women have access to information.

He said that the next phase will see the distribution of cows and buffaloes, so women can not only provide their children nutritious milk but sell it for additional income.

"The biggest challenge to children's health in Pakistan right now is stunting and malnutrition. These two problems affect the development of children.

"So we will empower women, give them chicken and eggs and help them become self-sufficient."

The premier also spoke of scholarship programmes for children from lesser income households.

"All of this is so Pakistan can be made into the state it was meant to be. A welfare state. A state that takes responsibility for the ones left behind.

"When someone asks me what that one reason is due to which Pakistan — which was seeing such rapid progress at one point — was unable to reach the pinnacle of success, I say it is because no country can witness development if there is a small fraction that is well-off among a sea of poor people."

He said that progress can only be possible with the uplift of the poor sections of society, as he put forward the example of the state of Madina.

Speaking of the 'Hunarmand Naujawan' programme, he said 500,000 youth will be imparted skills training "so they are well-equipped to make a living themselves".

He gave the example of Namal University, where numerous children from underprivileged families come to acquire education and after their graduation, are instantly able to procure jobs.

He also spoke of a loan facility to youth for their start-ups. "The youth will give out their business plans and the banks will evaluate their ideas on merit and provide them loans."

At the end, the premier thanked Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation Sania Nishtar for making a "foolproof programme".

He said with the data being collected under her guidance, the foundation for a welfare state was being laid.

"This will be the Pakistan Quaid-e-Mohammad Ali JInnah and Allama Iqbal had envisioned."

Pakistan suspends flight operations to China amid coronavirus outbreak

Pakistan suspends flight operations to China amid coronavirus outbreak
Pakistan on Friday halted flights to and from China with immediate effect, a civil aviation official said, as the death toll from a virus outbreak spreading in China mounted and the World Health Organisation called it a global health emergency.

“We are suspending flights to China until Feb 2,” additional secretary of aviation Abdul Sattar Khokhar told Reuters by phone, adding the situation would be reviewed after that date. He declined to comment on the reason for the closure.

Some airlines, including British Airways, have suspended flights to China due to warnings of the coronavirus outbreak. Germany, Britain and other countries have issued warnings about travel to China.

Russia also sealed its remote far-eastern border with China as a precaution on Thursday. Some countries have banned entry for travellers from Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the virus first surfaced.

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) will quarantine the Chinese and Southeast Asian ship personnel, its chairperson, Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar, and as preventive measures are ramped up to tackle coronavirus from spreading into the metropolis.

Akhtar said the containers, especially those arriving from China and southeast Asia, would be thoroughly checked, and that special care would be taken to ensure that the staff on these ships remained limited to the port only.

The crew aboard these ships were previously allowed to leave the ports when they arrived in the country but the authorities have now revoked the permission amid the virus' outbreak, he said.

Almost 30 to 35 percent of Pakistan’s total trade is with China, amounting to nearly Rs20 billion. Thousands of containers aboard ships from China are brought in monthly into the country.

The Pakistani government is monitoring the situation in China and is in close contact with the relevant authorities in order ensure safety of Pakistani students in Wuhan amid a coronavirus outbreak that has killed 170 people, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

“Islamabad has taken up the issue of food shortages with concerned officials and we are assured by the Chinese government of full cooperation in this regard," Foreign Office Spokesperson Aaisha Farooqui said at a press briefing.

In response to questions about the evacuation of Pakistani citizens from Wuhan, the epicenter of deadly virus, the spokesperson said, “Islamabad is monitoring the evolving situation and will take a decision after consultations among all the stakeholders.”

Gen Bajwa, Zalmay Khalilzad discuss Afghan reconciliation process

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad meets Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Friday held meetings with Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and expressed his gratitude for Pakistan's facilitation of the Afghan peace process.

According to a press release issued by the foreign office, Khalilzad — who arrived in Pakistan today from Qatar — met with Qureshi at the Foreign Office in Islamabad. During their exchange, the US envoy praised Pakistan's efforts for lasting peace in Afghanistan while briefing the foreign minister about the most recent talks with the Taliban.

"The finalisation of a peace treaty between the Taliban and the US will pave the way for inter-Afghan dialogue, which would not only benefit Afghanistan but the whole region," Qureshi was quoted as saying.

During the meeting, Qureshi assured the US envoy that Pakistan will continue to support efforts to bring peace in Afghanistan. Both sides agreed to carry on their respective efforts in this regard.

In a separate meeting with Gen Bajwa at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Khalilzad discussed "matters of mutual interest including overall regional security situation and ongoing Afghanistan Reconciliation Process", a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

According to the statement, the US envoy "thanked Pakistan for facilitating the process towards the mutual objective of peace in the region".

Khalilzad's visit comes after an escalation in tensions between the Taliban and the Afghan forces and as another round of talks kicked off, with the US envoy holding several meetings with the Taliban’s chief negotiator Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Sources aware of the developments that took place during the talks in Doha said the Taliban had agreed internally to halt attacks against US forces and “reduce” assaults against Afghan government interests, but clashes between the Taliban and Afghan forces have risen.

At least 29 members of the Afghan security forces have been killed in Taliban attacks that followed air and ground assaults by government forces on the group over the last weekend.

Afghan forces and the Taliban also clashed on Tuesday when security personnel tried to access the site of a crashed US military plane in central Afghanistan.

US forces were later able to access the site and recover the remains of two personnel and what is believed to be the flight data recorder.

Earlier, the Afghan defence ministry said on Sunday that government forces had killed 51 Taliban fighters in assaults last weekend.

Dr responsible for child’s death due to Polio

Dr responsible for child’s death due to Polio
Boat Basin Police registered a case pertaining to the death of a two-year-old girl , who allegedly passed away after being administered polio vaccine injections, against the suspected health workers on court orders on Sunday. The case was registered under Section 321 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which relates to causing the unintended death of a person.

The father of the deceased, head constable Zareen Muhammad, told The Express Tribune that a medical camp had been set up to vaccinate children in Shireen Jinnah Colony in July 2019.

“A female health worker came to our house and took my daughter Laiba to the camp with her without my wife’s consent,” he said. “My wife told her that the baby had fever but she did not listen.”

Muhammad claimed that the doctor present at the camp had directed the health workers to administer three injections to Laiba.

As she was given the vaccine, the child’s condition deteriorated and marks appeared on her legs. The girl was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors referred them to Indus Hospital after informing them that the infection has spread in her body.

After examining the child, the doctors at Indus Hospital told them that one of her legs had become infected and would have to be amputated. According to Muhammad, his daughter succumbed to the infection before the surgery could be performed.

Although he reported the death to the Boat Basin police, he said, they did not register the case, and neither did any senior officials take action.

The father added that he approached the relevant assistant commissioner, who took the statements of the health workers responsible and other relevant individuals.

In light of the statements, the assistant commissioner consulted with the relevant court, which ordered the registration of an FIR against the health workers.

deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge

deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge
Leading telecoms group chooses Nokia and Ericsson for 5G network

Orange, France’s biggest telecoms company, said it had chosen Nokia and Ericsson to deploy its 5G network in mainland France, as China’s Huawei Technologies faces intense political scrutiny in Europe.

“For Orange, the deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge and is one of the main priorities of our Engage 2025 strategic plan,” said Orange France CEO Fabienne Dulac.

“We are delighted to be pursuing our partnerships with both Nokia and Ericsson, two key long-term partners, in order to develop a powerful and innovative 5G network,” added Dulac.

Earlier this week, the European Union followed Britain’s example in allowing members to decide what part Huawei can play in its 5G telecoms networks and resisting pressure from Washington for an outright ban.

EU countries can either restrict or exclude high-risk 5G vendors such as Huawei from core parts of their telecoms networks, according to the new guidelines, which seek to address the cybersecurity risks to the bloc’s 28 countries at a national and EU level.

While previous cellular networks focused on mobile phones, 5G promotors say its greater transmission speed and total bandwidth will allow a ballooning number of objects such as traffic lights, crop equipment, refrigerators and other household appliances to send and receive data.

Yahoo says all 3 billion accounts hacked in 2013 data theft
Google’s recruiter asked Amazon employees that were involved in activism at their company to come work at Google.

The irony of the whole situation was that Google is also in the middle of a crackdown on labor activism and they also work with oil companies just the way Amazon does.

Yahoo says all 3 billion accounts hacked in 2013 data theft

“Hey Amazonions! I recognise your courage and bravery to speak out about climate change.

I believe your passion can truly change the world,” wrote Jason Lin, a UX recruiter at Google.

“Check out some of the ways Google is actively working to battle climate change below! I’d love to connect with you and talk about how you could take advantage of our 20% time!”

The 20% time is being referred to the hours of the day that the search engine giants’ employees spend pursuing their own projects.

Your smartphone is listening to everything you are saying

Around 350 Amazon employees violated their employer’s communication policy after they were threatened to be fired by the company for speaking up for climate activism.

The recruiter’s generous offer to hire these employees is quite ironic considering Google has been firing their own activists.

According to Motherboard, the Google recruiter was not informed that their company employees were advocating the same climate change policy as demanded by Amazon workers.

With 2000 employees demanding that the search engine giant ends its association with oil and gas companies.

A spokesperson for search engine giant told Motherboard that it was unaware of the recruiter’s LinkedIn post and that the recruiter had been acting on his own and later the post had been removed.

Djokovic expresses 'huge respect' for Federer

Djokovic expresses 'huge respect' for Federer
Novak Djokovic paid "huge respect" to old rival Roger Federer Thursday after he swept past the ailing star and into a record eighth Australian Open final to move closer to his 17th Grand Slam crown.

In the 50th installment of one of sport's greatest rivalries, the Serb shrugged off a tentative start to reinforce his recent dominance, showing no mercy to the injury-hit Swiss maestro in a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 6-3 win.

He will play either fifth seed Dominic Thiem or seventh-ranked German Alexander Zverev in Sunday's final, but it will take a monumental effort to prise another title from the 32-year-old.

Of the seven Melbourne finals Djokovic has made, he has won them all.

If any extra motivation was needed, winning on Sunday will see the Serb reclaim the number one ranking after Thiem sent Rafael Nadal packing in the last eight.

"It's never easy to play Roger. I mean, obviously he was hurting. You could see it in his movement. Respect to him for trying his best," said defending champion Djokovic, who is into his 26th Grand Slam fin

"After losing the first set, he got a medical (timeout). He came back and played all the way through. It's unfortunate that he was not at his best."

It was the fourth time Djokovic had beaten Federer at the semi-final stage in Melbourne after doing the same in 2008, 2011 and 2016.

Federer, the 2018 champion, came into the match carrying a groin injury that he picked up in his five-set, come-from-behind quarter-final win against Tennys Sandgren.

He was seen around Melbourne Park before the match with tape on his upper right leg and there were even rumours that he might pull out.

But that is not in the 38-year-old's nature — he has only ever given up four walkovers in his long career and has never retired in more than 1,500 matches, facts that Djokovic said were "amazing" and deserved "huge respect".

Djokovic was the clear favourite after beating the third seed in every Grand Slam meeting since Wimbledon 2012, but in their 50th career clash it was Federer who initially set Rod Laver Arena alight.

The opening game, on Federer's serve, lasted six minutes in an indication of what might be in store.

Then against the odds the 38-year-old, the oldest man in a Grand Slam semi since Jimmy Connors in 1991, broke Djokovic on his first service game with an unbelievable backhand passing shot.

The edge didn't last long with the Serb immediately hitting back to even it up.

But the power and finesse of the Federer game was troubling Djokovic, who was on the back foot and was broken once more to go 4-1 behind.

Federer had three break points to make it 5-1, but Djokovic dug deep to fend them off as he clawed back, breaking once more as the Swiss was serving for the set.

It went to a tiebreaker which the second seed dominated to pull off a remarkable turnaround in a set that Federer threw away.

Federer took a medical timeout at the end of it and he wasn't moving freely in the second set.

But he clung on until he fluffed an easy shot at the net to hand Djokovic set point at 4-5 and the Serb cracked a top-quality crosscourt volley to go two sets to one in front.

Djokovic was pumped and Federer rapidly running out of steam.

When the Swiss star was broken to go 4-2 behind in the third, there was no way back as his rival extended his winning record over him to 27-23.

UK will leave European Union today after 47 years of membership

UK will leave European Union today
The United Kingdom will leave the European Union today, after 47 years of membership.

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced to hail Brexit day today, as the dawn of a new era and will make pledge to unite Britain in an address to the nation.

Brexit was originally scheduled for 31st of March last year, but was repeatedly delayed when Members of Parliament rejected a previous withdrawal agreement reached by the EU and former Prime Minister Theresa May.

The UK formally leaves the EU. Prime Minister Boris Johnson will address the nation in what can be presumed to be an optimistic message. Other Brexiteers will be celebrating in grander style, as parties are being held across the country — including one opposite the Houses of Parliament, the body that thwarted Brexit so many times in 2019.
Remain voters will be holding similar protest events all over Britain.

The Union flag will be removed from all EU institutions (one of which will be placed in a museum in Brussels) and senior EU politicians will probably make statements expressing that this is a sad day for Europe and that they want to remain the closest of friends with Europe.

WHO declares public health emergency of corona virus of int'l concern

WHO declares public health emergency of corona virus of int'l concern
UN health agency on Thursday declared an international emergency over the deadly coronavirus from China a rarely used designation that could lead to improved international co-ordination in tackling the disease.

“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems…. This is not a vote of no confidence in China,” World Health Organization (WHO) chief WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a briefing in Geneva.

China reported its biggest single-day jump in novel coronavirus deaths on Thursday, as global fears deepened with more infections confirmed overseas including three Japanese evacuated from the outbreak’s epicentre.

The World Health Organization, which initially downplayed a disease that has now killed 170 in China, was readying to meet Thursday to decide whether to declare it a global emergency.

Many countries have urged their citizens not to visit China, while some have banned entry for travellers from Wuhan.

At least 15 countries have confirmed infections.

Consider it an honour if Indians are happy at my exit: DG ISPR

DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor
DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Thursday that he considered it an honour if Indians were happy over his transfer from the post of DG ISPR.

The military spokesperson was speaking to defence reports when he dismissed Indian Prime Minister Modi's recent remarks against Pakistan.

"Indian leadership says it will destroy Pakistan in 7-10 days," he said. "I want to tell them that Pakistan Army will always continue to give you [Indians] their surprises."

The DG ISPR said that no power on earth could defeat a united nation. He said the Indian army couldn't defeat 800,000 people of occupied Kashmir.

"How will you defeat Pakistan, a nation of 210 million people?" he asked.

The DG ISPR warned India against conducting any misadventure, saying that Pakistan will give an effective response in case of an "imposed war".

"I said it before, 'You will start the war but we will end it'," he said. Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said Pakistan's civil and military leadership wanted to bring about durable peace in the region.

"The Indian civil and military leadership should also think about peace in the region," he said, calling on the Indian armed forces to halt atrocities in occupied Kashmir.

The military spokesperson paid tribute to army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, saying that he spearheaded Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad which continued the success of Operation Sherdil and Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

"The army chief took difficult and important decisions to maintain peace in the country," he said, crediting Gen Bajwa with playing an important role in bringing about religious tolerance and madressah reforms.

He said that Pakistan was proud of its intelligence agencies and paid tribute to the spy agency for maintaining peace in the country and thwarting terrorism.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor spoke about the role of the DG ISPR, saying that he could not deviate from the military's policy.

"A military spokesperson can't say anything against the institute's policy," he said. "As a spokesperson, nothing you say is your personal opinion."

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that the new DG ISPR will assume charge from February 1. He thanked defence reporters, media and Pakistanis who extended their support to the armed forces on social media.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Army announced the posting of its new spokesperson, replacing Major General Asif Ghafoor with Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar as the director-general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Maj Gen Ghafoor’s services were transferred to the 40th Infantry Division (Okara), where he will serve as the general officer commanding (GOC).

Not advisable to evacuate Pakistani citizens from China: Mirza

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health, Dr Zafar Mirza
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health, Dr Zafar Mirza said that it was not advisable to evacuate Pakistanis from China, saying that the government will demonstrate responsible behaviour and not become a part in spreading the virus.

Dr Mirza said during a press conference that the government of Pakistan stood with its Chinese counterpart and would respect the directions of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Beijing.

"We don't want to take any emotional decision which will cause this virus to spread further," he said. "It is also our responsibility to ensure that our citizens in Wuhan are being properly taken care of and see to it whether they are being provided food or items of daily use or not," he added.

Dr Mirza said the Pakistani embassy in China was providing the government with information about its citizen in Wuhan. He said that it was in the "larger interest of the region" to not evacuate Pakistanis in Wuhan.

"This [decision not to evacuate Pakistanis] is what the WHO is saying and this is what China's policy is," he said. "This is also our policy."

Dr Mirza said that the government will ensure proper checks to keep the coronavirus from spreading when "the situation improves". He said the government will ensure proper screening at entry, exit points of the country and place under observation those who are at risk of carrying the virus.

He said that a Coronavirus Core Committee had been constituted which included the country's top health experts. Dr Mirza said the committee provided its recommendations daily and that the situation to tackle the virus was being modified on a daily basis.

Dr Mirza said that the government's decision not to evacuate its people from Wuhan did not mean that it didn't care about Pakistani citizens. He said that Islamabad was abreast with the facilities being provided to Pakistani citizens in Wuhan.

"I can show you many messages from Pakistani students in Wuhan who have told us that Chinese authorities are taking very good care of them," he said.

Dr Mirza said that not a single person in Pakistan had contracted the virus. He said 7,831 people had contracted the disease and 170 had been killed. The prime minister's adviser on health said only four Pakistani citizens in China had contracted the virus.

"That number remains at four. It has not increased," he said.

He appreciated the policies of the WHO, saying that Pakistan and China were both members of the global body. He said that the WHO had not recommended any member countries to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan, from where the disease had spread.

Dr Mirza credited China with effectively tackling the virus and said that not only Pakistan but countries around the world were appreciating measures taken by the Chinese government.

United States’ so-called peace plan is stillborn: Turkey

United States’ so-called peace plan is stillborn: Turkey
Turkey slammed the proposal as “stillborn,” calling it an “annexation plan” intended to destroy hopes for a two-state solution.

Turkey said US President Donald Trump's Middle East plan was "stillborn" calling it an "annexation plan" intended to destroy hopes for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

"This is an annexation plan aimed at killing a two-state solution and extorting the Palestinian territory," it added.

“The United States’ so-called peace plan is stillborn,” Turkey’s foreign ministry said in a statement. “This is an annexation plan aimed at killing a two-state solution and extorting the Palestinian territory. Palestinian people and its land cannot be bought for money.”

Turkey repeated its longtime mantra that Jerusalem was Ankara’s “red line.”

“We will not allow any step that will legitimize Israel’s occupation and persecution. We will always stand by brotherly Palestinian people. We will work for an independent Palestine in the Palestinian territory,” the ministry said. “We will not support any plan that is not accepted by Palestine. There will be no peace in the Middle East without an end to the occupation policies.”

Ramiz Raja wants Babar Azam to be brave in leadership

Ramiz Raja thinks that Pakistan T20I captain Babar Azam should challenge himself
Former Pakistan batsman and stylish commentator Ramiz Raja thinks that Pakistan T20I captain Babar Azam should challenge himself and lead the side in a brave way but the things are not visible as the team management is only desperate to win.

“Babar Azam is a young captain, he should think to make a team which revolves around the youth. He should be fearless captain which can challenge the opposition but the process can’t be seen as they are only looking to win and not to experiment around the young players,” Ramiz said while reviewing Pakistan team performance on his youtube channel.

The renowned commentator also asked the general public for their opinion on two 40-year-old cricketers, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez would be beneficial at the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia but according to him, they have passed their prime.

“In T20I cricket, we should experiment with youngsters but with Hafeez and Malik, it seems like they have given up on long-term goals and are only desperate to win. I am very clear on this matter that both of these stars have passed their prime and I called them as the ‘wheelchair players’,” he added.

The 57-year-old also said that the head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has given up to experiment with the new talent and he has opted to go with the negative approach.

Pakistan won the three-match T20I series by 2-0 against Bangladesh in Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and retained the number one T20I ranking. It was their first series win since 2018

It must be noted that Pakistan decided to recall Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez in the side after losing badly to Australia and Sri Lanka.

Palestinians reject Trump's Israeli-Palestinian peace plan

 US President Donald Trump
Angry Palestinians have rejected US President Donald Trump's Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, who say that the plan was deserving to go in the "dustbin of history."

Standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the White House's East Room, Trump said his plan could succeed where decades of previous US attempts to intervene had failed.

"Together we can bring about a... new dawn in the Middle East," Trump said to an enthusiastic audience that included throngs of Israeli and Jewish American guests — but apparently no Palestinian representatives.

They are flat out rejecting the plan, which grants Israel much of what it has sought in decades of international diplomacy, namely control over Jerusalem as its "undivided" capital, rather than a city to share with the Palestinians. The plan also lets Israel annex West Bank settlements.

Trump praised Israel for taking "a giant step toward peace" with the plan, which lays out a vision for future Palestinian statehood if a series of strict conditions are met.

These include requiring the future Palestinian state to be "demilitarised," while formalising Israeli sovereignty over settlements built in occupied territory.

The US president, who was followed at the podium by Netanyahu, painted a future where some $50 billion in investments would eradicate the misery gripping Palestinians today, while allowing Israel never "to compromise its security."

Criticising previous US diplomatic efforts as overly vague, Trump noted that his version was 80 pages long and contained a map depicting the proposed future neighboring states.

However, the Palestinians angrily rejected the entire plan.

"This conspiracy deal will not pass. Our people will take it to the dustbin of history," Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said.

Trump promised a "contiguous" future Palestinian state, addressing the current situation where Israel controls broad territory separating the two main population centers of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

But the map showed the West Bank remaining riddled with Jewish settlements linked to Israel and only a long road tunnel connecting the area with the seaside Gaza Strip.

The plan makes clear that Israel is free to annex its settlements on Palestinian lands right away.

On the flashpoint issue of Jerusalem, Trump said Israel should retain control over the city as its "undivided capital," Trump said. At the same time, the Palestinians would be allowed to declare a capital within occupied East Jerusalem, he said.

The Hamas movement, which runs the Gaza Strip, said it could never accept compromise on Jerusalem being capital of a future state.

The announcement came as both Trump and Netanyahu fight for their political futures.

Trump is in the midst of an impeachment battle over his alleged abuse of power and he faces a difficult reelection in November. Pro-Israel evangelical Christians form a key part of his voter base and they have backed his frequent moves to bolster Israel's position in the Middle East.

Netanyahu was formally indicted on three corruption charges on Tuesday after he abandoned an attempt to seek parliamentary immunity.

His right-wing Likud faces a neck-and-neck race with rival Benny Gantz's centrist Blue and White party in a month. But he is expected to benefit from the high-profile partnership with Trump.

Both men were interrupted by frequent applause and standing ovations during their speeches.

Netanyahu called the proposal "the deal of the century" and said to Trump "you have been the greatest friend that Israel has ever had in the White House."

Trump said he had written on Tuesday to Abbas to enlist his support.

"I explained to (Abbas) that the territory allocated for his new state will remain open and undeveloped for a period of four years," Trump said.

"This could be the last opportunity they will ever have."

Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who authored the plan behind the scenes but had minimal contact with Palestinian negotiators, was similarly blunt, telling them not to "screw up this opportunity."

"I think that they will have a very hard time looking at the international community in the face, saying they're victims," he told CNN.

Mixed international reactions

Trump's plan triggered immediate condemnation on the streets of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with demonstrations expected to continue through the week.

Thirteen people were wounded in the West Bank in clashes with the Israeli army, the Red Crescent said.

There was also anger from Israeli hardliners. Transport Minister Bezalel Smotrich, from the far-right Yemina union, said his party "won't under any conditions agree to recognition, whether explicit or implicit, of a Palestinian state."

The ambassadors from three Arab nations — Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain — were at the White House, providing some evidence of Trump's claim to have growing support around the region.

But international reaction was at best cautiously positive.

Saudi Arabia said it "appreciates" Trump's efforts and called for direct Israeli-Palestinian talks.

Russia, a growing force in Mideast politics, sounded skeptical.

"We do not know if the American proposal is mutually acceptable or not," Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Russian news agencies.

Netanyahu's office said he would travel to Moscow on Wednesday to present the plan in person to President Vladimir Putin.

Top EU diplomat Josep Borrell said the bloc would "study and assess" the US proposals, while Germany's foreign minister said "only a negotiated two-state solution, acceptable to both sides" would work.

Britain, which is leaving the EU on Friday and has long had a special relationship with Washington, gave the warmest reaction.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called it a "serious proposal, reflecting extensive time and effort."

Among the strongest foreign condemnations were from Turkey, which branded the plan "stillborn" and Iran, which called it "doomed to fail."

By contrast, Egypt urged "a careful and thorough examination of the US vision."

Governor, opposition have no role in IG's appointment: Wahab

Sindh Chief Minister's Adviser on Information, Law, and Anti-Corruption Murtaza Wahab
The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) said Wednesday the governor and opposition had no role in appointing the new inspector-general (IG) of police for Sindh.

The statement comes a day after the federal government urged the chief minister to appoint Sindh's top cop after consulting Governor Imran Ismail.

Speaking to the media, Sindh Chief Minister's Adviser on Information, Law, and Anti-Corruption Murtaza Wahab expressed disappointment over the federal government's move to backtrack from appointing a new Sindh IG.

Wahab said the federal government was provided three names by the Sindh government at first and later, two, for the post of Sindh IG. The consultation process between the federal government and Sindh had started on December 23, 2019, he added.

"We were told that the prime minister was in Davos and that he would resolve the issue [of the new IG's appointment] as soon as he returns to the country," said Wahab.

'Matter had ended'

He said all five names proposed by the Sindh government were discussed during a one-on-one meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. The meeting had ended on a positive note after both signed off on one name for the post of Sindh's top cop, he added.

"For Sindh government, the matter had ended [with the PM Imran-CM Murad meeting] as one name had been finalised between the federal and provincial governments," he said.

The matter had become a bone of contention between the federal and Sindh governments over the past couple of months.

Sindh wished to remove IG Dr Kaleem Imam, saying his performance was unsatisfactory. The centre, on the other hand, had snubbed the provincial government by saying Imam would continue to serve as IGP until further notice.

On Monday, PM Imran had held a meeting with CM Shah on the new IG's appointment. Both, according to media reports, had agreed to appoint Mushtaq Mehar as Sindh's top police cop. On Tuesday, however, the centre had announced the decision to appoint the new IG had been delayed.

During his press conference, Wahab claimed the Sindh government was taken aback when Dr Imam, while speaking at an event on Tuesday, had said "he was going nowhere and if he does, he will move to a higher post".

"When the media asked us questions [about Dr Imam's statement], we told them that the consultation between the federal and provincial governments was over," he said.

Wahab said it was disappointing to see how the federal government backtracked on its promise when the prime minister's special assistant, Firdous Ashiq Awan, had announced that the decision to appoint the new IG had been delayed.

Hope for new IG

Wahab further said the Sindh government believed in the rule of law and had been elected by the people. The governor and opposition had no role in the new IG's appointment, he added.

The adviser said the Sindh chief minister was a representative of the people and it was his constitutional right to change the police chief if he deemed so.

Wahab expressed hope that the new IG will be appointed along the lines of the consultations held during the January 27 meeting between the prime minister and the chief minister

Govt kicks off process to privatise public institutions: Awan

Minister for Privatisation Mohammad Mian Soomro and Secretary Privatisation Commission Rizwan Malik, and Firdous Ashiq Awan
The government is initiating a programme to privatise a number of public institutions to make them profitable, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan told the media on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, flanked by Minister for Privatisation Mohammad Mian Soomro and Secretary Privatisation Commission Rizwan Malik, Awan said that Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) laws and court orders are going to be kept in mind in the process of privatisation, as per Prime Minister Imran Khan's 2018 vision.

Addressing the press conference, Soomro said, "A strategic cell (for privatisation) has been created in the country after alapse of 10 years. The privatisation commission is based on the prime minister's 2018 vision."

"There are five federal government properties in Lahore which will be used to make cheap housing available to the public," the privatisation minister said.

Both the privatisation minister and secretary said that Pakistan Steel Mills is being turned into a profitable institution once more and the process for its privatisation will be completed by the end of the year. "A legal adviser has been appointed for Pakistan Steel Mills," Malik said.

The privatisation secretary said that foreign companies are showing growing interest in the current government's policies.

"The process of privatisation seems slow but we are working as fast as we can to make it happen and at least six institutions will be privatised this year," Malik said while adding that the Services Hotel Lahore, SME Bank and two power plants are going to be privatised by the year's end.

"The process of auctioning off underutilised state land is also underway and the money procured from these auctions will be used to pay off the national debt," the secretary told the media while adding that public land will be used for the public's benefit.

Briefing the media, Malik said that some institutions that are set to be privatised are not in loss, "but their profitability is not up to market standards".

PM Imran 'won’t do his job & agree to an IG', tweets Bilawal

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari lashed out at Prime Minister Imran on Wednesday by stating that the "PM won’t do his job & agree to an IG" as the federal government delayed appointment of the new Sindh IG.

Taking to Twitter, Bhutto reacted to the federal government's decision to defer the appointment of the new Sindh IG. Bilawal stated that the prime minister had changed Islamabad IG when "he didn’t obey illegal orders to take action against a poor family", referring to the incident involving Azam Swati more than a year ago.

"PM changed IG Islamabad as he didn’t obey illegal orders to take action against a poor family who’s cow had dared to stray into a ministers home. After months of deteriorating law and order, on public demand, when the elected representatives of the people of Sindh 1/2," he tweeted.

"Send 5 names on basis of seniority for a new IG to federal government. PM won’t do his job & agree to an IG. This is another eg of #AikNahiDo Pakistan & the joke that is #NayaPakistan. It would be funny if this did not have such serious consequences for real peoples lives. 2/2"

The stalemate between the federal and Sindh governments continued on Wednesday despite PM Imran and CM Murad's agreement on appointing Mushtaq Maher the new Sindh IG.

Sindh government spokesperson and Chief Minister's Law Adviser Murtaza Wahab said during a press conference that Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and the opposition did not have the prerogative to appoint a new IG.

“The legal procedure does not say that the governor is to be consulted with, that is why we want the consultations and decisions to be made between the federal and provincial government," he said.

The provincial government had decided a couple of weeks ago to remove Sindh's top police officer, alleging that he was not performing his duties.

Pakistan calls for two-state solution after Trump’s ‘Peace Plan’

foreign office spokesperson aisha farooqui
Pakistan on Wednesday called for a “two-state solution” to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict hours after US President Donald Trump announced his ‘Peace Plan’ calling it a "historic opportunity" for the Palestinians.

The Foreign Office in a statement said, “Pakistan has consistently supported a two-state solution, as enshrined in the relevant Security Council and General Assembly Resolutions.”

Trump’s plan proposes a four-year freeze of Israeli development in the area eyed for a future Palestinian state. However, Trump stressed at the news conference that "Jerusalem will remain Israel's undivided, very important, undivided capital."

“Pakistan continues to support a just and lasting solution of the Palestinian issue, through dialogue and negotiations, that leads to the realization of the legitimate rights of the Palestinians, including the right of self-determination, the FO statement added.

“We renew our call for the establishment of a viable, independent and contiguous State of Palestine, on the basis of internationally-agreed parameters, the pre-1967 borders, and with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.”

Meanwhile, the Palestinian government rejected Trump's peace plan and termed it as the “slap of the century” on Tuesday as thousands of Palestinians held protests in Gaza and the West Bank.

“I say to Trump and (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu: Jerusalem is not for sale, all our rights are not for sale and are not for bargain. And your deal, the conspiracy, will not pass,” Abbas said in a televised address in Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Saudi Arabia said Wednesday it "appreciates" President Donald Trump’s efforts to devise a Middle East peace plan and called for the start of direct talks between Israel and the Palestine.

Any disagreements with the plan should be resolved through negotiations under the auspices of the United States, it said, "in order to move forward with the peace process to reach an agreement that achieves (the) legitimate rights of the Palestinian people."

"The kingdom appreciates the efforts of President Trump’s Administration to develop a comprehensive peace plan between the Palestinian and the Israeli sides," the foreign ministry said in a statement carried on state media.

CIA chief ‘behind Soleimani’s assassination’ killed, Claims Russian Intelligence

CIA chief ‘behind Soleimani’s assassination’ killed, Claims Russian Intelligence
Russian intelligence sources have claimed that Michael D’Andrea, head of CIA operations in Iran and who orchestrated the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, was killed in a US spy plane downed yesterday in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

The plane with US Air Force markings reportedly served as the CIA’s mobile command for D’Andrea, who earnt several nicknames including: Ayatollah Mike, the Dark Prince, and the Undertaker. He is one of the most prominent CIA figures in the region, appointed head of the agency’s Iran Mission Centre in 2017. Under his leadership, the agency was perceived to take a more “aggressive stance toward Iran”.

The Taliban claimed to have shot down the plane but have yet to provide evidence, whilst the US has denied the claim but has acknowledged the loss of a Bombardier E-11A plane in central Afghanistan. Graphic images online have already circulated purportedly showing some of the charred remains of those on board.

It has been speculated that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) may also have a hand in the incident, especially as anti-aircraft support has previously been given to the Taliban. Additionally, the Afghan Shia Fatimyoun Brigades, who are trained by the IRGC, also have a presence in the country.

Donald Trump's plan is treason of century: Iran

Donald Trump's plan is treason of century: Iran
Iran has censured US President Donald Trump's so-called "Deal of the century" on the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict, describing it as "treason of the century."

"The Zionist regime is an occupying regime and the only solution to solve the Palestinian crisis is a referendum among all main residents of the Palestinian land and such vicious plans are doomed to failure," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Tuesday.

He called on all free nations and governments in the region and across the world to counter Trump's disgraceful scheme.

Earlier in the day, Trump repeated his highly controversial endorsement of occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s “undivided capital” as he outlined his administration’s self-styled plan for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which Palestinians have already dismissed.

Defying international outcry, Trump announced the general provisions of the plan he calls “the deal of century” at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his side.

He endorsed his contentious recognition in December 2017 of the al-Quds as Israel’s “capital,” a move he took in the face of Palestinian demands that the holy city should serve as the capital of their future state. He said the plan envisages the city as the Israeli regime’s “undivided capital.”

The Iranian spokesperson (pictured above) further noted that Palestine and Jerusalem al-Quds are the main issues of the Muslim world and expressed regret that "some Muslim countries have forgotten this cause," voicing concerns that it is meant to harm "the future and prestige of Muslims and Islamic countries."
